THE STAFF OF THE CONFRATERNITY OFFICE GREETS YOU .....

A hearty welcome to our magnificent people, from the staff of the Confraternity office.
At this time of our annual gathering, it may be well to set a time for reflection on the
nature of Confraternity work.
There are many disturbing elements in the field of catechetics today, and consequently
many complaints. One should not assume that these complaints are new in the life of the
Church. For history will tell us - and particularly Church history - that the path of the
true believer is journeyed with many difficulties and obstacles. One has only to read the
epistles of St. Paul, and the epistles of St. Peter and St. James, to note the many warn-
ings against those who would indulge in merely the expression of human wisdom to the
detriment of the divine Message of salvation.
As a point of reflection, one may well suggest that we should take a more positive attitude
towards the distractions we meet in Confraternity work today. This attitude will be es-
pecially based on a deep and embracing faith, with a definite knowledge of the work we
are asked to accomplish. St. Paul, in writing to the Philippians, expresses this attitude in
the following language: "Do all that has to be done without complaining or arguing, and
then you will be innocent and genuine, perfect children of God among a deceitful and
underhand brood, and you will shine in the world like bright stars because you are offer-
ing it the word of life" (Phil. 2 :1416).
St. Paul calls for an attitude which is best expressed in what one may term the serenity
in the faith, where there is an assurance that under proper direction, we are making a
contribution to the encouragement of the life of faith.
We realize that in many catechetical texts today there is a diminution or watering down ·
of the content of doctrine, which is being substituted by a methodology in which the pres-
entation of essential truths is clothed in language that is far more sociological than reli-
gious. In the past few months our Holy Father, Pope Paul VI, has warned catechetical
writers and teachers of their duty to preserve the integrity of the truths of faith, and not
yield to the temptation of a humanism which may be superficially acceptable, yet would
exclude the very heart and core of the divine message entrusted to the care of the Church.
In this respect, we may also quote the late Pope John XXIII, who stated at the opening
of the Second Vatican Council in 1962: "The substance of the ancient doctrine of the de-
of faith is one thing, and the way in which it is presented is another. And it is the latter
that must be taken into great consideration, with patience if necessary, everything being
measured in the forms and proportions of a magisterium which is predominantly pas-
toral in character."
(continued next page)
In our reflections we must also consider what the logicians would term the "universe of
discourse." In our Confraternity program, our time with our pupils is so necessarily
limited that the good Confraternity teacher can do nothing more than teach the essentials
of Christian doctrine. From the pedagogical point of view we continually ask ourselves,
what is the pupil achievement on a teaching schedule of a maximum of one and one half
hours per wee~? Very little indeed. A Confraternity teacher must not deprive the children
of God of their spiritual heritage by presenting merely theological views or opinions or
trends, or - worse still - secular or worldly views.
To be true to our calling, a teacher must make certain that the child of God knows in
simple language of his heavenly Father and His Divine Son, Jesus Christ; of the mag-
nificent role of our Blessed Mother; the redemptive role of the Church for all mankind;
the eminent authority of the Holy. Father who is Peter, and - above all - the power of
prayer. How many teachers today make the distinction between teaching prayer and teach-
ing prayers? It is not an easy task in many Confraternity classes, but since prayer is the
universal means of communication with God, a special effort should be made to teach the
children, even as our Lord taught the apostles, how to pray. _/
The objective, then, of the Confraternity teacher, is a devotion to, and emphasis on, the
essentials of Christian doctrine, with the fond hope that through grace and further study
the child will grow in wisdom and grace, even as he grows in age. From the standpoint of
a complete religious education, we do but little, but let us do that little well.
As a conclusion to reflection, we give you a thought from St. Paul's epistle to the Colqs-
sians: "Make sure that no one traps you and deprives you of your freedom by some second-
hand, empty, rational philosophy based on the principles of this world instead of on
Christ." (Col. 2 :8)

You will leave with joy.
and be led away in safety.
Mountams and hills
will break into joyful cries before you,
and all the trees of the countryside
clap their hands.
Cypress will grow instead of thorns.
myrtle instead of briars.
And this wiH make Yahweh famous,
a sign forever. ineffaceable.
Isaiah 55:12-13
