Note: Attempt all question. Take suitable assumptions wherever necessary.

Q.1 The following data is given for a Francis turbine:

Net head : 70 m
Speed : 700 rpm
Shaft power : 330 kW
Overall efficiency : 85%
Hydraulic efficiency : 92%
Flow ratio : 0.22
Width to diameter ratio of wheel at inlet : 0.1
Outer diameter of runner : 2 x inner diameter of runner
Velocity of flow at inlet and outlet : constant
Discharge at outlet : radial
The thickness of vanes occupies 6% of circumferential area of the runner. Determine
(a) Diameters of runner at inlet and outlet
(b) Guide blade angle
(c) Runner vane angles at inlet and outlet

Q.2 The following data is given for a Kaplan turbine:

Power available at shaft : 22500 kW
Head : 20 m
Speed : 150 rpm
Hydraulic efficiency : 95%
Overall efficiency : 88%
Outer diameter of runner : 4.5 m
Diameter of the hub :2m
Assuming that the discharge at the turbine exit is radial; determine the vane angles at
inlet and outlet of the extreme edge of the runner.

Q.3 A conical draft tube having inlet and outlet diameters 1.0 m and 1.5 m discharges water
at outlet with a velocity of 2.5 m/s. The total length of the draft tube is 6 m and 1.2 m of
the length of draft tube is immersed in water. If the atmospheric pressure head is 10.3
m of water and loss of head due to friction in the draft tube is equal to 0.2 times the
velocity head at outlet of the tube, determine:
(a) Pressure head at inlet
(b) Efficiency of the draft tube
P.T.O.

Q.4 A centrifugal pump impeller having external and internal diameters 480 mm and 240
mm respectively is running at 100 rpm. The rate of flow through the pump is 0.0576
m3 /s and velocity of flow is constant and equal to 2.4 m/s. The diameters of the suction
and delivery pipes are 180 mm and 120 mm respectively and suction and delivery (15)
heads are 6.2 m (abs.) and 30.2 m (abs.) of water respectively. If the power required to
drive the pump is 23.3 kW and the outlet vane angle is 45°, determine:
(a) Overall efficiency of the pump
(b) Manometric efficiency of the pump

Q.5 A three-stage centrifugal pump has impeller 400 mm in diameter and 20 mm wide at
the outlet. The vane angle at outlet is 45° and the area occupied by the thickness of the
vanes may be assumed 8% of the total area. The pump delivers 3.6 m3 of water per
minute when running at 920 rpm. Taking mechanical efficiency as 88% and (15)
manometric efficiency as 77%, determine:
(a) Total head generated
(b) Specific speed of the pump

Q.6 A single acting reciprocating pump has a stroke length of 150 mm, suction pipe is 7 m
long and the ratio of suction pipe diameter to the piston diameter is 3/4. The water
level in the sump is 2.5 m below the axis of the pump cylinder and the pipe connecting
the sump and pump cylinder is 75 mm in diameter. If the crank is running at 75 rpm, (15)
determine the pressure head on the piston at the beginning, middle and end of the
suction stroke. Take atmospheric pressure head = 10.3 m of water, and friction co-
efficient for suction pipe = 0.01.
