Q1. A Composite wall of 10 m x 6 m is made of different materials as shown below. Thermal
Conductivities of the materials are 10, 5 and 11 W/m ⁰C respectively. Temperatures at the inside
and outside of the wall are 100 ⁰C and 25 ⁰C and the Convective heat transfer coefficients are 18
W/m2 ⁰C and 10 W/m2 ⁰C respectively.

a) Draw the thermal circuit for heat flow across the wall. (with convective resistances) [5]
b) Calculate rate of heat transfer through the wall. [10]
c) Calculate interface temperatures of the wall. [5]
d) What thickness of insulation (K = 0.065 W/m ⁰C) should be added to reduce the heat loss
through the wall by 75%. [5]
Q2. A pipe having (I D = 20 mm, thickness = 5 mm, k pipe = 50 W/m2 ⁰C) is required to be
thermally insulated. The outside air film heat transfer coefficient is 12 W/m2 ⁰C. The thermal
conductivity of insulation is 0.3 W/m ⁰C. Assuming the temperature difference between the
inner surface of the pipe and surrounding air is constant.
a) Determine whether the insulation will be effective? [6]
b) Determine percentage change in the rate of heat transfer if the critical insulation is used? [14]
Q3. Consider a wall (k = 82 W/m ⁰C) is 10 mm thick having inside and outside temperature
are 150 ⁰C and 45 ⁰C.
a) Determine heat transfer per unit area. [5]
b) Write Boundary Conditions for the wall. [5]
c) Determine temperature distribution equation in the wall. [5]
