Anxiety | Gender Differences
● Rates for anxiety vary, with women having higher
diagnosis rates
● More disabling for women, however: greater risk for other
disorders (50% depression diagnosis)
● Anxiety affects a large amount of people, 18% of people
have some kind
● Among teens (us), it’s very high
● Cases severely inhibit individuals:
○ Affecting their ability to do normal activites
○ Avoidance of many
○ Inability to control emotions

But why?
● In history, anxiety disorders were known, but not specifically
○ Back in Greek & Roman Times, it was pantophobia by experts: Fear
of everything
○ Many centuries later, neurasthenia, anxiety neurosis, both relating
to original
○ Even a few decades ago, it was commonly known as phobias
● I know a few people who were diagnosed once in their life, but
statistics don’t match up
● With stigma, it’s hard to tell who is currently struggling with it
● Regardless of gender, both have a nearly 6 times risk for
another disorder
● Robs people of certainty, autonomy, status, which they have no
control over
Stigma & Needs
● Roughly ⅓ of people with anxiety get treatment, regardless of other factors
● Stigma: Social and Internalized/Self
○ Social: Other people dismissing, preemptively treatment as a threat
○ Self: Person turning those ideas inward
● Best way to combat stigma is to talk & spread facts
● However, for teeenagers, as we develop we are offset by the solidifying changes
● In general, a good way to stop anxiety early is to talk about it

However, stigma prevents many people from talking.

● As someone who has no (known) mental health issues, going to see a therapist is socially
intimidating, ( like an ER visit instead of a regular checkup)
● Earlier you notice and care for brain health, the better off you’ll be
