Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The BrainPOP video used for this lesson can be slowed down, replayed, viewed with captions, viewed in different
languages, or read as a transcript instead. It is accessible to students of many learning levels and allows for their
parents to get involved at home as well. This lesson is accessible outside the classroom giving students more
freedom to review at their own pace. There is review, quizzes, and graphic organizer templates to assist students in
their learning.

Lesson idea implementation:
The BrainPop video will be used to introduce Lord of the Flies and the themes it teaches. After reading Lord
of the Flies, students will watch the BrainPOP video to learn more background about the story and its possible
themes. After watching the video, students will create a comic book type display of their chosen theme. Comics
should include scenes from the story that support their main theme and captions below their scenes that
describe how it proves the theme.
Students are encouraged to use any form of technology that will assist them in their project, such as
reviewing the BrainPOP video multiple times, or using a production software to create their display of their
theme. Final projects should be posted on a class website with links available to all students so they can view
each other’s work.

Reflective Practice:
This project could be extended by asking students to make more than one comic for more than one
theme. Posting the links extends the lesson because it allows students to publish their products and view
other students’ products as well. Students could also present their projects to the class.
Sharing their projects with other students encourages them to do their best work. This lesson
framework can be used to teach other standards with other books as well.
