modern day term. Natural cycles and the power of
vital, unpolluted raw materials form the basis of
all Dr. Hauschka products, and always have done.
Imagine our company as a flourishing garden: we
work as carefully and responsibly as possible, base
our actions on nature’s rhythms, value manual work
and see the merits of both healthy compost and a
rich harvest.
Specific sustainability.
As the manufacturer of Dr. Hauschka, sustainability is
not simply an expert topic; it is an indispensable part
of our product quality and is therefore an everyday
consideration.
›› We almost exclusively obtain our raw materials
from controlled organic cultivation (Demeter
quality where possible) and under fair trade
conditions.
›› We think and work in material cycles – for example,
with in-house water treatment, easy-to-recycle
packaging materials and composting production
waste.
›› We conserve resources wherever possible too:
for years, we have procured 100% certified green
electricity, used heat recovery and the ground
temperature for air conditioning purposes,
provided company bicycles and supported
commuting via train or car-pools.
The garden really exists.
A garden really does form the hear t of our
company – and is located behind our head office
in Eckwälden. With an area of approximately
4.5 hectares, we grow around 150 dif ferent
medicinal plants here using biodynamic methods.
We take care of both noble roses and common
daisies – which many simply regard as a wild flower
but we see as a cosmetics ingredient for activating
the metabolism. We cultivate our own seeds and
tend to our seedlings ourselves. And when the
workload increases at harvest time, employees from
many different WALA departments all pitch in to
support the work in the garden.

Sustainable partnerships all around the world.

We also support sustainability through the ecological, socially responsible partnerships that we have
created. For example, we obtain shea butter from an organically certified collection area in Burkina Faso
and the precious oil of the Damask roses comes from countries such as Afghanistan, where we are working
with the World Hunger Organisation to support more than 400 farmers who now use organic rose growing
as an alternative to opium cultivation.

Together with you, we are helping to preserve and, as per the Demeter concept, heal the earth for future

When you look in the mirror, you see more than
just a familiar face: you pick up the signals that
are emitted by your skin, your lips and your eyes.
We believe that you can sense what is benefitting
you today and what is helping you to be at one
with yourself and the world. We believe that your
face cannot be observed separately from your
body, your body not separately from your mind
and your inner being not separately from external
influences. Our facial care affects more than just
your skin.
Your skin in general.
Skin is a flexible, strong yet sensitive organ. You and
your skin cannot be classified as a single ‘type’: you
need the right care concepts for different days and
places, different seasons and different stages of life.
At Dr. Hauschka, we therefore refer to skin conditions,
which appear and disappear, rather than static skin
types. You are not ‘dry skin’ or ‘combination skin’
(see p. 14).
You will tend to have certain skin conditions but
do not retain these for life. For example, you may
use Quince Day Cream most days of the year but
replace this with Rose Day Cream if your skin is
feeling sensitive.

Authentic and expressive.
A sound trio: cleanse, tone, moisturise.
All Dr. Hauschka facial care products complement
and support each other as a triad. We differentiate
between cleansing, toning and moisturising
products. And we understand the effect of essential
oils and selected medicinal plant essences when they
skilfully interact. Irrespective of which Dr. Hauschka
moisturising product you choose, you should always
combine it with a cleansing product and a toner or
serum, all of which use selected medicinal plants to
strengthen your skin functions in a targeted manner
and prepare it for moisturising (see p. 16).
Your skin care regime:
as different as day and night.
At night, your body’s rhythm differs from the one
it follows during the day: as you sleep, your skin
undergoes natural cleansing and recuperation,
and should be able to breathe and work freely. We
therefore intentionally refrain from using heavy night
time skin care. By cleansing your skin with Cleansing
Cream or Cleansing Milk and toning with a serum,
toner or intensive treatment, you perfectly prepare
your skin for its night time regeneration (see p. 18).

Cleansing allows
your skin to breathe
Cleansing your face is as natural as breathing. It frees
your skin from dirt and dead skin cells, and forms
the basis for the holistic Dr. Hauschka skin care
concept. Your skin will have a radiant new freshness,
pore-deep clarity and a healthy, rosy complexion.
Dr. Hauschka products for facial cleansing are
free from surfactants and support the skin’s own
activity. The basic cleansing routine involves using
Cleansing Cream or Cleansing Milk in the mornings
and evenings. This clears the skin and prepares it for
the subsequent steps in the skin care triad: toning
and moisturising. This does more than just let our
skin breathe: we feel free and create the prerequisites
for natural beauty.
Tip: Facial Steam Bath and Cleansing Clay Mask
complement the facial care range for intensive cleansing
if the skin tends to be blemished (see p. 46).

For all skin conditions. Cleansing Cream gently cleanses,
exfoliates, fortifies and refreshes, protecting the skin’s natural
protective function for healthy, radiant skin. Cleansing
Cream retains the skin’s natural hydro-lipid barrier while also
preparing it for the next stages in the Dr. Hauschka skin care
daily care routine.
Formulation: The highest quality medicinal plant extracts
of calendula, chamomile and anthyllis, with creamy sweet
almond meal, cleanse, balance and revitalise skin to minimise
the appearance of pores.
Skin condition
For all skin conditions.
Usage
Cleanse in the morning and evening. Moisten face, neck and
décolleté with a warm face cloth. Mix ½-1 inch / 1-2 cm of
Cleansing Cream with warm water in the palms to form a
smooth, creamy paste. Press mixture gently onto skin then roll
hands up and away in a wave-like motion. Start in the centre
of the forehead then slowly work outward and down, ending
at the décolleté. Avoid the eye area. Repeat the press and roll
action 2-3 times. Do not rub or scrub. Rinse with warm water
then finish with a splash of cool, fresh water to close pores.
For sensitive skin use warm water only.

Cleansing Milk

Cleansing Milk gently removes dirt and make-up prior to
cleansing with Cleansing Cream. For sensitive skin, Cleansing
Milk is a daily cleanser with harmonising, protective properties
to calm sensitivity and help diminish the appearance of
redness, whilst maintaining the skin’s natural moisture
balance.
Formulation: Anthyllis, jojoba and almond oil maintain the
skin’s natural protective function.

For sensitive skin and all skin conditions for make-up removal.
Usage
Wet face with warm water. Gently apply a thin, even layer
(1-2 pumps) to face, neck, and décolleté, working from your
forehead down and from the centre out. To remove eye
make-up, apply to a dampened cotton wool pad and use
gentle sweeping movements from the inside to the outside
corner of your closed eye.
Tip
After removing make-up we recommend the use of Cleansing
Cream for normal, dry, oily, mature and blemished skin.

When your skin
needs a little support
Our skin not only reflects our inner being, but also acts
as a mediator with the outside world: it protects us
against external influences and balances temperature
fluctuations. These are just a few of its basic functions,
for which a little support can do it good.
The strengthening Dr. Hauschka facial toners
encourage the skin’s own powers of regeneration,
and are the ideal second skin care step for after daily
cleansing – both morning and evening. Premium
quality compositions with medicinal plants such
as witch hazel and kidney vetch activate the skin’s
metabolic functions. The non-greasy compositions
allow the skin to breathe and help create a clear, rosy
complexion.
Trust in your own strengths, and gently and
effectively prepare yourself and your skin for the
next stage of your daily care or an undisturbed night.
Tip: Intensive, harmonising night care is provided
through the Rhythmic Conditioners (see p. 49) or

Facial Toner supports the skin’s natural processes of cleansing
and renewal, refine the appearance of pores, balancing
moisture and oil content, and leaving skin looking and feeling
healthy, toned and radiant. Facial Toner is the ideal daily care
product for normal, dry and sensitive skin, as well as skin that
is in need of regeneration.
Formulation: Anthyllis extract helps skin remain balanced
and healthy. Witch hazel extract supports tone and elasticity,
refining pores.

excessive oiliness. Anthyllis balances skin for a calm, even

Clarifying Toner is the ideal daily care product for improving
blemished skin. The oil-free toner has a regulating, balancing

a great deal every day. It therefore needs special
protection and harmonious care that rounds off the
morning’s cleansing and toning as a third step in the
skin care routine.
And it is precisely for this reason that we have
developed the Dr. Hauschka daytime care products.
High quality plant extracts activate the natural
moisture supply while essential oils and valuable
waxes protectively pamper your skin without
impairing its natural ability to breathe. Our daytime
care products are as diverse as you are. Whatever
your usual skin condition or your current stage of

life, the valuable product compositions stimulate
your skin’s natural regeneration. For an even, gently
bronzed complexion, you can additionally choose
Toned Day Cream or Translucent Bronze Concentrate.
Slight blemishes can be hidden with the clarifying
Pure Care Cover Stick.

Moisturizing Day Cream
revives dehydrated skin
Moisturizing Day Cream gently restores the rhythms for
almost all skin conditions. Pale, dry skin becomes enlivened
with this light moisturiser. Extracts of anthyllis, witch hazel
and calendula combine with nurturing oils to balance oil
production and replenish the skin. A light moisturiser which
balances the oil and moisture content of the skin, this day
cream, with a light citrus scent, refreshes and enlivens skin.

For normal, dull, dry or mature skin.
Usage
Apply evenly to your face and neck in the mornings after
cleansing and toning your skin. For combination skin, using

Why does
Rose Day Cream contain
St. John’s wort?
The iconic Rose Day Cream centres on the many
facets of the rose. These are joined by St. John’s
wort (hypericum perforatum), a vibrant, yellow
summertime flower. The radiant petals, which stretch
up towards the sun on straight stems, are abundant
at the time of the summer solstice. This seems to be
an expression of St. John’s wort’s sunny disposition.

How it all began:

Elisabeth Sigmund’s first developments
Born in Vienna in 1914 and regarded as the mother of
Dr. Hauschka cosmetics, Elisabeth Sigmund took inspiration
from one of her grandmother’s creams when developing the recipe
for the Rose Day Cream. Dr. Hauschka interviewed her about
her love of aesthetics and inner beauty.

Dr. Hauschka: Ms Sigmund, you trained as a
beautician and founded your cosmetics institution
‘Salong för Skönhetstsvard’, meaning ‘Beauty Salon’
in Stockholm in the early 1950s. How did you end up
as an esthetician?
Elisabeth Sigmund: The key factor was my love of
not only medicinal plants but also aesthetics. This
made me realise that cosmetics were for me and
induced me to break off my medical studies. The
confirmation that this was the direction I should
take came in 1938. I can still remember the date
clearly as it was when Rudolf Steiner published his
book ‘The Arts and Their Mission’ (‘Das Künstlerische
in seiner Weltmission’). In this, he wrote: “The word
‘beautiful’ is related to the verb ‘to appear’. A thing
that is beautiful appears, or in other words allows

its inner being to come to the surface. For that is
the essence of beauty: it does not conceal itself but
instead allows its inner being to come to the surface
and shine through as an outer appearance. A thing of
beauty is therefore something that reveals its inner
being in its outer appearance…”. If I had not read
this paragraph by Rudolf Steiner, I would never have
become an esthetician.
In your cosmetics institution in Stockholm, you not
only developed your own treatment methods but also
a range of cosmetics based on a very special concept.
How did that come about?
My ideas were based on numerous literary studies.
For example, from my knowledge about the
skin’s structure combined with logical thinking,
I concluded that grease should not be removed
from greasy skin and added to dry skin, as was
standard practice in the 1950s. This lead to my skin
care concept: I apply oil to greasy skin for its care
and a light facial lotion that stimulates the skin’s
regulatory powers to dry skin. At the time, this
approach to skin care made me a rebel.

And you were also able to immediately test the

products you developed.
Yes, that was brilliant. My customers were happy to
act as guinea pigs and be the first to try out newly
mixed creams and oils. I still remember the sense
of joy when I saw real improvements in the skin of
one of my customers. Blemishes disappeared, and
all with the power of the medicinal plants in my
cosmetics. It was the sense of joy experienced by a
researcher whose beliefs have come true.

Today, you are regarded as the mother of Dr. Hauschka

You emphasise your love of medicinal plants, which cosmetics. How did you come to work with

One of the first Dr. Hauschka cosmetic products was
the Rose Day Cream. You brought the basic recipe
for this with you from Stockholm. What inspired you
to develop what is today the best known and most
popular Dr. Hauschka cream?
The Rose Day Cream is based on a cream that my
grandmother used to use, a kind of Creme Céleste
or celestial cream. She had a recipe for it, which her
pharmacist made up newly for her every time she ran
out. This face cream contained olive oil, beeswax,
ethereal rose oil and rose water. When I first took a
real interest in cosmetics, my grandmother gave me
a copy of the recipe, which she had brought from
her home region of Moravia. Despite the turmoil of
the Second World War, during which I had to move
house several times, I saved it as my little gem. Once
in Stockholm, I took it back out and modified it by
adding St. John’s wort oil and hand-pressed juice
from moisture-rich liquorice roots, which I acquired
from a gardener. I still love the Rose Day Cream and
use it for my own facial care even today.
If you look back over your many years of dealing with
cosmetics, what were your most important discoveries?
For me personally, in addition to the discovery of so
many medicinal plants that affected the skin, there
were two major things. Firstly, I discovered that a
cosmetic made purely from natural ingredients can
do a great deal more for the skin than a conventional
cosmetic made from chemical/synthetic substances.
The second key discovery for my treatment concept
was that the skin regenerates more effectively at
night if you do not use a night cream. It is far better to
treat your skin with an aqueous solution containing
medicinal plants that stimulate your skin’s natural
activity. I am delighted to see that these discoveries
still form the basis of Dr. Hauschka cosmetics.
 Eye Care
For every blink of an eye
Almost 90 percent of our sensory impressions are
gained through sight. Our eyes are truly magnificent
things, which process and forward information at
lightning-fast speed. But their ability to express
emotions is also impressive. We refer to the eyes as
the window of the soul. They laugh, question, marvel
or cry. Yet using them all the time can wear them
out. If this is compounded by other irritants such as
dirt particles, dry heater air, a lack of sleep or long
working hours in front of a monitor, the sensitive
areas around the eyes react quickly, becoming tired
and irritated. The eyes need special protection in
addition to the daytime care given to the face.

Divide one cosmetic pad in half to make two circular pads.

The power of the night
Night offers a time of peace and to breathe. Your
body, mind and soul use sleep to recuperate and
process the day. Our skin also needs this rest time.
It uses the night time hours to renew its cells while
also dispelling excess metabolic products through its
pores. At night, it does not need protection against
environmental influences, but instead needs the
chance to naturally regenerate and breathe freely.
A cream would only slow down these processes and
disturb the skin’s natural rhythm.
After evening cleansing, we therefore opt for night

affects our skin. And when sleeping poorly, the skin’s

something. At times like these, you should give your

Dr. Hauschka intensive care products give your

personal intensive skin care regime with a Facial

Red clover:

The spherical, reddish-white, hedgehog-like heads
of red clover (trifolium pratense) peek out from every
meadow. The flower heads are made up of multiple
individual blossoms with an elongated form, which are
pollinated by long-tongued bumblebees. Red clover is
particularly full of vitality, as is evident from its tireless
growth, which is unhampered even when the meadows
are mowed. A further sign of this regenerative strength
are the isoflavones, or phytohormones, that
the red clover contains. For red clover, these provide
protection against herbivores; for our skin, they
offer protection against premature signs of ageing.

Mature performances
The use of Regenerating Serum is not only the second, toning step
in the daytime skin care regime for mature skin but also a great way
of completing the night time skin care regime.

Nature shows us the way. At night, dew falls onto grass, flowers and petals, which glisten in the first rays

Sage Bath

Silk cocoons can be uncoiled to create long threads
that can be turned into the broadest range of substances,
such as reel silk, bourette silk or crèpe de Chine.

The molecular description of silk sounds a little less glamorous: two long amino acid
chains, sericin and fibroin, come together to form the silk threads. Sericin, also known as
silk gum, sticks the fibroin fibres together. However, the properties of keratin, a type of
structural protein, are certainly exciting. Keratin is so thin that the silk threads only become
visible once we have wound four to ten of them together. What we then see appears simply
magical as the multi-layered protein structure reflects the light. This structure makes the
silk thread so elastic that its length can be extended by up to 25 % when stretched. Despite
this, it is stronger than a metal thread of the same thickness.

Feeling good starts

Your teeth have an important job. By breaking
up food, they prepare it to be optimally digested.
Healthy teeth are therefore a key prerequisite for
stable health. And teeth are true wonders. The tooth
enamel that surrounds them is the hardest substance

delicate and sensitive so, Dr. Hauschka mascara and
liquid eyeliner contain calming extracts of black tea
and eyebright. Black tea is also an essential ingredient
in kajals and eyeshadows – here it is combined with
extracts of kidney vetch and witch hazel, which have
stabilising, refining properties. Kidney vetch is found
in almost all Dr. Hauschka decorative and face care
products. As its balancing powers and excellent
adaptability enable it to harmonise the broadest range
of skin conditions, we regard it as a key plant that is of

Before the artist dips his brush in the paint, he prepares

his canvas with a primer. We treat our faces with just as
much care and start by carefully smoothing our complexion.

Even complexion

›› Start by cleansing, toning and moisturising your
skin (see p. 13).
›› Apply the Translucent Make-up over your
moisturiser. Important: the shade should match
your skin tone for a natural appearance.
›› Use the Concealer to smooth out minor blemishes
and give a fresher appearance to your eye area. To
achieve this effect, the shade selected can be a
nuance lighter than your skin tone. Only apply the
Concealer to the eye area in which you find dark
circles – in other words, to the inner but not the
outer eye.
›› Use a powder brush to apply Translucent Face
Powder or Bronzing Powder.

Our Concealers with mineral pigments are available in three

shades that softly cover both blemishes and any trace of
tiredness around the eyes. Their core ingredients – avocado

›› Start by defining your eyebrows with a shade from
the Eyeshadow Palette and an eyeshadow brush.
›› Next, apply eyeshadow. Use the brush to apply a
light shade to the inner corner of the eye in an
upward movement. Apply a darker shade to the
eye areas that should stand out less.
›› The eyes look particularly striking when you
choose shades that complement the iris colour:
›› For blue eyes: Eyeshadow Solo 01, 02, 03, 09
›› For green eyes: Eyeshadow Solo 03, 04, 07, 08, 09
›› For brown eyes: any shade
›› Use the Kajal Eyeliner to accentuate the shape of
the eye. Apply Liquid Eyeliner, which intensifies

›› Mascara adds a finishing touch to eyes. Apply this
first to the lower and then the upper lashes using
a zig-zag technique: hold the brush at a diagonal
to the lash growth direction and move it back and
forth. Finally, take the brush away to the side, not
upward (see also p. 126).
›› Eye make-up can be gently removed using the
creamy Cleansing Milk (see p. 21). Simply pump
a little Cleansing Milk onto a moist cotton wool
pad or a Dr. Hauschka cosmetic sponge and gently
wipe away the eye make-up using a sweeping

Shape-giving
candelilla wax
Candelilla wax has an extremely high melting point, is very strong, shines,
binds oils well and is adhesive. When hot, it smells of beeswax and is even
edible. What makes it interesting to us is how wonderful it feels on the skin
together with its abilities to improve consistency, making candelilla wax an ideal
ingredient for our Mascara. Every single lash benefits from a nurturing,
caring application.

The wax is obtained from the Mexican spurge shrubs euphorbia antisyphilitica,
euphorbia cerifera and pedilanthus pavonis, which have developed a clever
tactic for protecting themselves against the heat in their native habitat.
Their greyish-green, un-branched stems and sparse leaves are coated in
a layer of candelilla wax, which prevents evaporation and protects them
against environmental influences.

Dr. Hauschka: Mascara applied in the mornings makes tired eyes look more awake. What should we think
about when applying it?
Karim Sattar: I want to start by saying something about the choice of colour as this can already influence
the entire impression given off by the made-up eye. Black has a powerful effect whereas brown is equally
as colour-intensive but looks far softer. If mascara is pretty much the only make-up you want to apply
or you’ve only just started experimenting with decorative cosmetics, brown is the right choice. However,
those who want to apply black mascara should, in all events, choose a softer colour such as brown for the
lower lashes. This graduated colour immediately makes the face look far younger.

Rejuvenation through colour selection, that sounds exciting. So, I’ve chosen a colour, extracted the brush and
start with my top lashes…
…and you can already optimise your technique. If you want to apply mascara to both your top and bottom
lashes, you should always start with the bottom ones. By doing so, you avoid any loss of colour from the
still wet mascara on your top lashes. If your eyes start to water while you’re applying mascara, remain
calm. Don’t fan air into your eyes but instead gently close your eyes and swallow. The application process
itself is most effective if you use a zig-zag movement. This is a special application technique in which we
use the brush from the side, i.e. holding it at a diagonal to the lash growth direction, and move it back
and forth. Finally, take the brush away to the side, not upwards.

And that has a visible effect on the lashes?

Oh yes, the effect is impressive: you get right to the upper edge of the lash line, making the lashes appear
thicker. The eyelid area looks as though an extremely thin line has been drawn along it.

That sounds good! Are there ways of fixing this beautifully applied mascara?
Yes, of course. The best thing to use is powder. Use an eyeshadow brush to apply a little Translucent Face
Powder to your lashes before applying the mascara.

You hear a great deal about special brush designs. Does the design really make a difference?
The design is extremely important in fact as it determines the effect. For example, when we were designing
the new brush for our Volume Mascara, we ensured that it would paint even the finest of lashes. This
created a product for women with both full and sparser lashes.

Sometimes my lashes clump together when I apply mascara. What can I do to prevent that from happening?
It can help to brush through the painted lashes with a clean brush. The lashes are then beautifully
separated but still coated in colour. Lashes often clump together if you apply mascara several times. This
is a good way of strengthening the colour’s effect but also quickly makes your lashes stand out too much
for the wrong reasons. In such cases, less is more.

Before you leave us, do you have any further special application tips for mascara?
With Dr. Hauschka mascara, your lashes remain so elasticated that you can accentuate the tips with a
different colour without the individual lashes sticking together. This makes your eyes appear more open
and friendly. It also creates a wonderful lightplay in the sunshine. It’s like revealing a little secret when a
different colour suddenly appears.

Colours to ward off evil spirits.
Egyptian records from around 4,000 B.C. describe a
substance called kohl, which women, children and
men used to darken their lashes, eyes and eyebrows
to protect them against evil spirits. Back then, the
colour was produced by pulverised minerals such
as antimony, galena, manganese oxide, black iron
oxide and magnetite. Even soot was among the
substances that were incorporated into greases
to produce the black substance. However, kohl
truly did have a protective effect. The evil spirits
that it warded off were what we today know as
bacteria. The mineral components of kohl had
an antibacterial effect and therefore provided
protection against bacterial eye diseases, which
were extremely common in Egypt due to the hot,
dry climate.
As long and dark as possible.
While black-painted eyes were a part of everyday
life in the Near East, in Western culture, any colour
on the face was long regarded as heathen and
scorned. This situation only changed at the end of
the 19th century when the ladies of high society
developed a taste for the thickest, longest and
darkest eyelashes possible. To achieve this effect,
they coloured their eyelashes with a mixture made
from coal dust or soot and elderberry juice.
Heartache remedy.
A somewhat more elegant version of mascara
was developed in the USA in 1913 by the brother
of a young girl named Mabel who wanted to look
irresistible for a rendezvous with her sweetheart
Chet. Her brother T.L. William was a chemist and
created a black substance for his big sister to apply
to her eyelashes by mixing together coal dust
and vaseline. The plan worked, or at least Chet
and Mabel were married a year later. In 1915, T.L.
William established the company Mabelline with
his product and offered his mascara in tubes. He
also sold brushes onto which women wanting to
apply the mascara could squeeze out the black
substance as though onto a toothbrush. Another

the uses of mascara over its 6,000-year history
have been as diverse as its ingredients.

of William’s developments was the first compact mascara in block format. As you had to moisten the ink
before being able to apply it with a brush, this became known colloquially as spit mascara.

Packaging is key, but not everything.

Now all that remained was the step in which mascara took on its current form. This was taken in the mid
1950s by Helena Rubinstein (1870 – 1965) from Krakow. She had the idea of filling small bottles with a
liquefied version of mascara. These bottles were sealed with lids and had an integrated brush.
Today, the exterior shape has barely changed; We still buy mascara in bottles with a brush. The differences
are found in the contents, and are well worth a much closer look. The Dr. Hauschka mascara which was
launched on the market in 1999 is free from synthetic chemicals, fragrances and preservatives. Medicinal
plant extracts from eyebright, black tea and neem leaves complement the base ingredient of natural wax.

Once a pioneer, always a pioneer –
WALA Heilmittel GmbH
WALA Heilmittel GmbH has been developing natural
preparations since 1935. In the early days of its
history, it was considered avant-garde and pioneering
in a society that was barely even aware of natural
preparations. Speedy technical solutions seemed to
have taken a business precedence.
But this was not the case ever y where.
Anthroposophical doctors were one of the main
groups to enthusiastically seize upon Rudolf
Hauschka’s procedure for producing natural
medicines without using alcohol as a preservative.
The demand for his preparations encouraged
Hauschka to establish WALA in Ludwigsburg in 1935
and open subsidiaries in Vienna and London shortly
afterwards. Following a ban by the National Socialists
and the imprisonment of Dr. Hauschka and his future
wife Dr. Margarethe Stavenhagen, WALA relocated
several times before finally establishing itself in Bad
Boll/Eckwälden in 1950 – where it still remains today.
Complementary skin care.
For many years, Rudolf Hauschka considered
launching his own skin care range to complement
the medicines range – a kind of extension of the
preparations to maintain healthy skin. However,
his ideas only became a reality when he met
Vienna-born Elisabeth Sigmund, who ordered
preparations from WALA for her self-developed
skin care products. The cosmetologist, who
was at the time living in Stockholm, travelled to
Eckwälden and worked with the medicine experts
to develop recipes for facial care products that
already complied with today’s standards for
natural skin care products. They jointly developed
solutions for stable cream bases without chemical/
synthetic emulsifiers and created fragrance mixes
with natural essential oils.
The first products were launched in 1967 and
Elisabeth Sigmund trained the first Dr. Hauschka
esthetician in 1971.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care remains highly committed

to the pioneering spirit of its early days; in 1999,
the company launched a complete make-up range –
with natural ingredients and a recipe that not only
beautifies but also nourishes. In 2009, the skin
care range was expanded to include medical care
products – Dr. Hauschka Med.
Today, WALA has three divisions: WALA Medicines,
Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and the medical care range
Dr. Hauschka Med.
