How to create a cohesive learning community
1. Classroom environment should be “busy” - all students focused and engaged
in improving their piaying and musical understanding.
2. The teacher's role is not a static one— question, explain, demonstrate and
circulate throughout each cliss period.
3. Plan 4 or 5 meaningful, related activities for each class session
4. Choose your musical examples (drills, readings, repertoire) carefully.
In addition to highlighting a concept, they should facilitate attention to
several pianistic areas (ie. voicing, fingering, articulation)
5. MUSIC is always the focus — challenge students to create a phrase, choose
dynamics, try adding pedal, ete.
6. Address comfortable technique in every class (more than once!)
7. Provide musical rationale — students deserve to know why (and how) they
should practice what you are assi

Why am (taking Keyboard Skills and how will it help me in ney
career?
Music Schools consider keyboard study an essential element of the undergraduate
curriculum for all music majors. To obtain the maximum benefit from your class and
practice time, you should understand how and why the keyboard will be useful to you as a
musician.
It is likely that your future performances as a solo artist will be on your major instrument.
We cannot realistically hope to produce piano virtuosos in a one or two-year program! Most
of you, however, will teach at some time in your career whether it be in a private studio,
college, or university. To be able to accompany your students is a handy skill for those
situations when an accomplished accompanist is not available. Those of you who may teach
in the public school system will need the keyboard for a variety of activities: accompanying
classroom singing, directing band or orchestral rehearsals, or assisting beginning
instrumentalists in learning parts.
Even if you should never accompany any lessons or rehearsals, the, keyboard can be an
important resource tool for you. At the piano, you can listen and evaluate music that you
might choose for a student or ensemble. It is a tremendous aid in analysis. It is simply not
possible to werk through a multi-part composition on a singie-line instrument. Music
students who can translate theoretical concepts such as intervals, chords, etc., into sound
and physical relationships also fare better (i.e. get better grades) in their aural skills and
musicianship classes.
We expect you to spend most of your practice time here at Northwestern on your major
instrument. We will structure your keyboard assignments so that you can make consistent
progress in playing the piano with about 45 minutes of practice per day. If you make a
conscientious effort to spend time daily at the keyboard, the piano will serve you well in the
future.
