“Action: (Logos in the Nicomachean Ethics).” The Middle Included: Logos in Aristotle, by

ÖMER AYGÜN, Northwestern University Press, EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, 2017, pp.

113–144. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt22727tz.11.

Defines the concept of ethos as a mode of persuasion. Claims ethos is the credibility

established by the speaker. In the commercial, Sarah McLachlan is the main speaker

advocating for donations in support of abused animals. The article shaped my analysis by

seeing the mode of persuasion was using a credible speaker who is not involved in drama

and is liked by many.

Kalia, Soma. “Colour and Its Effects in Interior Environment: a Review .” 7 Oct. 2013.

Discusses the color theory. Colors all have different meanings, and invoke different

feelings out of people. The article talks about how certain colors could be seen as

comforting, while others could be welcoming and encourage happiness. It shaped my

analysis my discussing blue being a calming color, and brown being used as welcoming,

which the commercial had both of these colors present for the same exact reason.

“Pathos.” Tropes of Transport: Hegel and Emotion, by Katrin Pahl, Northwestern University

Press, Evanston, Illinois, 2012, pp. 50–80. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt22727qd.6.

The article discusses the mode of rhetoric known as pathos. It claims there are different

types of ways emotions could be evoked, and how it isn’t always directly pathos. My

analysis was influenced by the pathos being described by Katrin Pahl. The pathos is seen

in the imagery and sounds, so it’s evident the commercial relies on emotions to achieve

their goal.

Ragefc. “Sarah McLachlan Animal Cruelty Video.” YouTube, 3 Oct. 2006,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gspElv1yvc

This is the youtube video of the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals’ advertisement in discussion. The advertisement shows many animals who were

abused, put into shelters in need of donations. The use of color intertwined with the

concepts of color theory. The commercial relied heavily on appealing to the audience’s

emotions.

“Speech: (Logos in the Politics.” The Middle Included: Logos in Aristotle, by ÖMER AYGÜN,

Northwestern University Press, EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, 2017, pp. 145–188. JSTOR,

www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt22727tz.12.

Defines the concept of logos as a mode of persuasion. Claims logos is the reasoning or

proof used while persuading to get people to join that side. Throughout the commercial,

statistics are provided demonstrating how much good the company has been doing in the

past. The article shaped my analysis by leading me to see how logos was used in the

commercial.
