Q1 : A joint in the fuselage skin is constructed by riveting the abutting skins between

two straps as shown. The fuselage skins are 2.5 mm thick and the straps are each 1.2 mm
thick; the rivets have a diameter of 4 mm. If the tensile strength in the fuselage skin must not
exceed 125 MPa (125 N/mm2) and the shear stress in the rivets is limited to 120 MPa(120
N/mm2),determine the maximum allowable rivet spacing such that the joint is equally strong
in shear and tension. (Hint : in this loading condition consider the number of rivets as N=1)

This question can also be written by giving (b) (we can call it (w) to be consistent with the
slides in the lab) and asking students to calculate the maximum allowable failure force in
tension and shear and compare/ decide which will occur first. (They should be both the same)

For tension
For shear

Q2. State if the following statements are true or false:

(a) It is always better to have more rivets in the joint as it provides more currying stress
capacity.
Answer is false as more rivets may weaken the joint.

(b) The rivets must be made of a material with higher mechanical properties to provide
a stronger joint
Answer is false as joint strength depends in many other factors as diameter and number ….
In the lab rivets were made of the same material.

(c) When calculating the joint efficiency (𝜉) for the four modes of failure studied in the
lab, the failure will occur for the mode with lowest value of (𝜉).
Answer is true (This question is the easiest as this is what we did in the lab)
