1. To familiarize students with the basic concepts of digital communication and Information Theory
2. To make students understand different components of digital system
3. To be able to design and implement digital modulation schemes
4. To be able to design and implement error coding schemes

COURSE TOPICS: (syllabus)


THEORY:

Introduction to Digital Communication


Why Digital? Elements Digital Communication System, Basic transmission, Bits, Baud, Timing, Distortion
and Channel Capacity, Digital input-output Devices, Digital Transmission on Analog Channel

Formatting & Base Band Modulation


Analog to Digital Conversion, Sampling Theory, Quantization & its Types, Pulse Code Modulation (Linear
Companding), Delta Modulation, Waveform Representation of Binary Digits, PCM Waveform Types, M-ary
Modulation Waveforms

Base Band Demodulation/ Detection Theory


Basic Detection Theory & Optimum Receiver Design, Detection ofBinary Signal in Gaussian Noise, The
Matched Filter, Inter SymbolInterference, Equalization

Digital Modulation Techniques


Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), andPhase Shift Keying (PSK,DPSK,QPSK),
Detection of Modulated Signal, M-ary Digital Modulation Schemes, Sampled Matched Filter

Multiplexing, Framing & Synchronization

Information Theory, Information measure, Entropy, Information rate, Shannon’s Theorem, Coding for

PRACTICAL:

 To examine ‘Pulse Amplitude Modulation’ and ‘Sample and Hold’ methods of sampling and to
observe the Aliasing effect.
 To examine the operation of 12-bit and 4-bit linear PCM coders and decoders
 To examine RZ (Return to zero), NRZ (Not Return to zero), MANCHESTER and AMI digital data
formats.
 To produce a digital link one way telephone using ADC (Analog to Digital converter) and DAC
(Digital to Analog Converter).
 To examine PWM and PPM modulator operation.
 To examine how PWM and PPM receiver work.
 Amplitude Shift Keying
 To perform Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) modulation and demodulation.
 To examine the effect of noise and attenuation on ASK systems.
 To observe Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation and demodulation.
 To examine the effect of noise and attenuation on FSK systems.
 To observe the 2 PSK (Phase Shift Keying) modulation and demodulation.
 To observe the Costas Loop for coherent detection at the receiver.
 To observe QPSK modulation & demodulation.
 To observe DPSK Modulation and Demodulation.
 To implement Correlation Receiver and Matched Filter using simulation tool.
 To Implement 5-tap transversal equalizer
 To plot the capacity of binary symmetric channel
 To plot the mutual information of the binary non symmetric channel
 To simulate a Block Code of (6, 3) & (63, 57) order using MATLAB Communication Toolbox
