Assignment -1 - Advertising analysis

Week - 8 to 10 (Maximum 15 Marks)


Marking Criteria for Assignment – 1

Here the students are supposed to analyze One Advertisement (Commercial /


Non-Commercial), analysis should cover the following Parameters.

1. What is the purpose of the advertisement? Who are the targeted audience?
What makes you say that?
2. How does the advertisement attempt to manipulate the consumer into buying
the advertised product?

3. What is the general ambience of the advertisement? What mood does it create?
How does it do this?

4. What is the design of the advertisement? Does it use axial balance or some
other form? How are the basic components or elements arranged?

5. What is the relationship between pictorial elements and written material and
what does this tell us?

6. What is the use of space in the advertisement? Is there a lot of 'white space" or
is it full of graphic and written elements?

7. What signs and symbols do we find? What role do they play in the ad's
impact?

8. What does the background tell us? Where is the advertisement taking place
and what significance does this background have?

9. What theme or themes do we find in the advertisement? What is it about? (The


plot of an advertisement may involve a man and a woman drinking but the
theme might be jealousy, faithlessness, ambition, passion, etc.)

10. What is the style of language used? Does it essentially provide information or
does it try to generate some kind of emotional response? Or both? What
techniques are used by the copywriter: humor, alliteration, definitions" of life,
comparisons, testimonial, stereotype and so on?
11. What is the item being advertised and what role does it play in Omani culture
and society?

12. What sociological, political, economic or cultural attitudes are indirectly


reflected in the advertisement?

Assignment II - Print Advertisement

(Week 12 to 14) (Maximum 25 Marks)

Marking Criteria for Assignment II

Mark break-up:

Appropriate Layout format and Rough Layout = Maximum 5 mark

Appropriate background Design and color = Maximum 5 Mark

Appropriate Text (Headline, Body and Slogan/ Tagline = Maximum 5 Mark

Appropriate Visual elements, design and

Originality of the images/concept used = Maximum 5 Mark

Composition and Overall output = Maximum 5 mark

Students are supposed to make ONE Comprehensive Layout of Print


Advertisement of any kind in A3 Page. (Commercial or Non-Commercial)

Thumbnail sketches/Rough Layout should be submitted in A4 along with the


final product.

Please consider the following useful Instructions:

 Photographs or illustrations/materials should be original and taken/made by


the student.

 Advertisement must carry all the elements.


 Text (Headline, Body and slogan/ Tagline) must be original (not copied from
any Advertisement)

 Students may choose a product in small groups, but produce the


Comprehensive Layout of Print Advertisement individually.
