ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 ● For the Safe and Efficient Use of Natural Refrigerants
ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 Standard for Safe Design of
Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
The workhorse of the suite
How systems and auxiliary systems are designed
New – more later
Overview of the New IIAR - 2
➢ 136 pages - Extensive revision
➢ Document reorganized - Most existing material retained -
clarification of existing material
➢ Scope expanded to include safety topics
➢ Consistent with other codes, standards, and regulations
➢ Moved some content to other IIAR Standards and added
content from IIAR Bulletins
➢ Added new content and hot issues
ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 ● For the Safe and Efficient Use of Natural Refrigerants
ANSI/IIAR 3-2012 Ammonia Refrigeration
Valves
A Standard for the Manufacturers of Valves
Under Revision, target is 2017
IIAR 4 – Installation of Closed-Circuit
Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
Published in 2015
Covers installation specific topics
Much material from prior versions of IIAR 2
ANSI/IIAR 5-2013 Startup and Commissioning of Ammonia
Refrigeration Systems
Provides the MINIMUM CRITERIA for startups
Shall be used to establish Startup SOP
Details safety checks before and after charging
Emphasizes information/steps required before starting
Details leak and pressure testing, evacuation and charging
IIAR 6 – Inspection Testing and Maintenance of
Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
Currently Under Development
Provide minimum criteria - what to check and how often to check it.
Provide the criteria based on equipment and supporting equipment
Will be written with regard to both large corporate systems as well as
“Mom and Pop” facilities
Will NOT detail the means and methods to correct identified problems
Will use much of Bulletin 109 &110 material
Many iterations so far – has been difficult
Targeted Completion 2017
ANSI/IIAR 7-2013 - Developing SOPs for Ammonia
Refrigeration Systems
Every system must have SOPs
Establishes the minimum criteria for what should
be included in an SOP
Draws a “line in the sand” about what is adequate
Provides additional guidance if a facility is PSM
and RMP regulated
IIAR 8 – Decommissioning of Ammonia
Refrigeration Systems
Details the steps involved for complete facility
shut down
Pump down with minimum residual charge or
nitrogen charge
Addresses regulatory issues such as transfer of
ownership and “de-listing”
Addresses situations where equipment is “moth-
balled”
Published 2015
