ASSESSMENT Students were able to:
- use media that requires a high level of skill in its
manipulation
- critically look at the face and the human body and
show qualities of subject matter
- discuss the artwork with an audience and recount the
process giving a subjective opinion of their own work
LEARNING EXPERIENCES

STAGE 3
SUBJECT MATTER: THE BODY
AND ITS PARTS

1. QUALITIES OF THE HUMAN FORM DURATION: One Lesson

Students will
- look at a classmate in detail identifying some of the human characteristics
eg. height, joints, length of arms to body, shape of head, muscle structure,
etc
- look closely at details on their own bodies such as – finger structure and
movement, skin patterning and hand shape
- discuss how certain media is more appropriate to render the human body
than others
- draw other classmates in different poses using stick figure and tornado
method to fill in the form
- change the model and the pose @ six times

Date Completed Revised / Extended / Comment

2. DRAWING THE HAND Duration: Two Lessons

Students will
- look closely at their own hands and try different poses
- use graphite pencil to lightly draw the framework of the hand on artpaper
and when this is correct fill in the main details
- add lines to the hand that make it appear to be made from metal
- dot the corners of the metal pieces
- take a second pose of the hand and on the same piece of paper using the
technique of automatic drawing ie. Starting at one point of the hand and
drawing it without looking at the hand or taking the pencil from the paper
- draw the hand a third time again altering the pose and breaking the
drawing down into all the details that can be seen then using shading to
show form

Date Completed Revised / Extended / Comment

3. WIRE SCULPTURE - FANTASY Duration: Five Lessons
Students will
- look at the body of a classmate again identifying the form but without
detail, looking at proportion, height, mass and size
- discuss creating a fantasy figure and what that might be and how it may
be realised
- experiment with lengths of aluminium wire to make bends and then to re
stretch it straight
- follow teacher instructions in making the model:
1. leaving 5cm of wire wrap the end 3 times around three of your own
fingers
2. remove fingers and twist the long and short ends together
3. bend the long end horizontally out from the now formed neck
4. stretch the wire out 15cm from the neck and bend it back towards the
neck again
5. repeat 15cm out from the neck in the other direction, these are the
arms
6. twist each of the arms to make strong limbs
7. use a second piece of metre long al wire and bend it in half
8. firmly attach the bent joint to the neck of the model
9. measure vertically down10cm on this wire and open the two ends out
to form the legs
10. measure 15cm from this bend and bring the wire back up to the body
11. twist the leg and repeat on the second leg
12. attach any loose ends into the body and twist the body section
13. use paper clay to dress and accesorise the fantasy figure eg.
superhero, dragon, and if needed attach extra wire for support
14. (teacher will staple gun figure to a wooden block)
15. put the model in a desirable pose
16. discuss the difficulties and challenges in the making of the sculpture

4. OBSERVATION DRAWING Duration: One Lesson

Students will
- use graphite pencil to draw the model in large format on artpaper
- include details of line of wire, additions and pose
- watercolour a background to the figure
- discuss the process they have come through and other media or subject
matter that could be used
