CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES

ROBOTICS - INTERMEDIATE

General Information:
 The Intermediate Robotics Program will consist of five courses. You will have a
theory and practical component for each course.
 You have to wear safety glasses when working on your project.
 You need a pencil for every class.
 All course outlines, notes, video resources, and course assignments will be
posted in this Google Site. Your marks and assignment dropboxes will be located
in Brightspace in the same module name and code as shown on the top of your
assignments.
 You are responsible for finding out what you have missed if you are absent.
 Due dates will be set for projects and must be followed. If you will not be done on
time, arrange with the instructor to come in during extra lab time to get your
project completed on time.
 The lab will be open most days by 8 AM and at least 1 hour after school.
 You can expect to have a quiz the next scheduled class day after theory is
presented or on an assignment due date.
 You will have to pass the Safety Quiz with at least 80% in order to work in the
lab. You will also be required to return the signed Lab Safety Contract before
working in the lab.
 You will be required to complete an engineering binder/duotang/e-folder that
contains all your data including component data sheets, circuit design, and any
other documentation for the project you are working on. This will have to be
completed for the circuit design and construction project as well as the sensor
integration project. These must be neat, complete, and organized. Papers
stapled together will be assigned an incomplete mark.

COURSE OUTLINE:

ELT2010: ELECTRO-ASSEMBLY 2
Prerequisite: ELT1010
Students will use computer software to design circuits and develop circuit board positives
for circuit projects. Students will work on designing and fabricating control circuits for their
robotics system or a circuit of their choosing.

ELT2140: ROBOTICS 2
Prerequisite: ELT1130 or ELT1140
Students demonstrate the fundamental concepts of sensor devices and control systems
by building an electronic circuit to control robot operation. The robotic system will be
microprocessor based and controlled with various sensors.

ELT2160: ROBOTICS SENSOR 1

Prerequisite: ELT1140
Students demonstrate how basic sensors are used in a robotic system. A range of
sensors will be examined and interfaced with the microcontroller system. This will include
programming as well as hardware interfacing strategies.

ELT2170: ROBOTICS SENSOR 2

Prerequisite: ELT2160
Students demonstrate how specialized sensors are used in a robotic system. A range of
specialized sensors will be examined and incorporated in a programmable control system
using a microcontroller. The evaluation of sensors will include selection for inclusion in
the robot system project.

ELT2180: PROCESS CONTROL

Prerequisite: none
Students develop skills in robotics/simulation software control by creating, modifying, and
using programs that incorporate computer-controlled movements and events in
robotics/simulation activities and applications. This module can be combined with work in
another module to satisfy requirements in both and allow for a more complex project
undertaking.

ELT2910: ELT Project B

Prerequisite: none
Students develop project design and management skills to extend/enhance
competencies developed in other CTS courses. Students will tie this module in with other
Robotics modules to complete a major project. This is an optional module that can be
used for a larger project undertaking that encompasses many new themes for creating a
robotic system based on a programmable microcontroller/single-board-computer.

COURSE EVALUATION:
Each module will have several assessment tools by which your work will be
evaluated. Check D2L for the current mark in the modules you are working on or
have completed.

COURSE FEES:
The course fees cover such items as circuit board, electronic components, etchant, developer,
drill bits, wire, cable, cable ties, standoffs, connectors, and other supplies necessary to construct
products. If there is a project to be undertaken that will involve extra costs, this amount will be
communicated to the student and this amount will have to be paid before the delivery of the
components.

The course will be set up so that you will be working on the assignments independently. There will
be theory components that must be completed. All engineering data such as chips used, sensor
data, circuit board originals, and chassis design data must be kept organized and available to the
teacher at any time during the semester. The engineering data will form a large component of the
robot mark.

The safety portion of the course must be completed first. You must get at least 80% on this before
you can move on. You may re-write it as many times as needed to pass.

The main project to be completed will be an autonomous control system. Several circuit boards
will be fabricated and integrated into the system.

The fine print:

REASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN ROBOTICS 10 CAN OCCUR.
Students are encouraged to do their best to prepare themselves to appropriately respond to the assessment
of course outcomes following the schedule as detailed in each course outline. Providing students an
opportunity for improvement, departments may provide a chance for students to reassess an assessment or
a part thereof.

Before a reassessment is granted to a student, corrective action will be required so that the student can gain
a more thorough understanding of the content and/or improve upon a skill/concept. This can be achieved by
one or more of the following: developing a learning plan, corrective instruction, relearning concepts, practice,
change in learning strategy (Including attendance), and participating in tutorials. Departments may add
further criteria for the student to accomplish to ensure curricular understanding prior to the student
completing a reassessment.
