Project Information

1) Project Duration
a) Date of Capstone Project commencement (17thDec 18)
a) Date of Capstone Project Completion (20thMar2019)
2) Topic
Cost comparison between cast-in-situ Vs precast concrete for mass affordable
housing projects in India.
3) Project Objective

 Estimating the cost of construction of 1 EWS unit of 32 Sqm where construction

is carried out by conventional method.
 Estimating the cost of construction of 1 EWS unit of 32 Sqm where construction
is carried out by precast concrete construction.
 Comparison of resources used in both the methods.

4) Methodology to be adopted

Identifying scope of work

The scope of work comprises of cost comparison in using the conventional technique of
construction & precast construction for 1 EWS unit of 32 Sqm area.

Literature review
Various journals and articles pertaining to conventional and precast technique of construction
will be used to gather the information which will required to achieve the scope of work.

Research design
For achieving the scope of the project both primary and secondary data will be used. Primary
data will be collected for precast construction from either of the three companies, namely
Amrapali, Supertech, BG Shirke. Further secondary data will be collected for both the
techniques by the means of literature review.

Moreover I’m going to use BIM to make a layout plan of the EWS unit to calculate the exact
quantities, so that a more precise estimate of cost can be made.

Data collection
Both primary and secondary data will be used to carry out the research. Data regarding the
cost of precast units will be collected by the means of site visits to the casting factories of any
of the 3 companies listed above.

Discussion and conclusion

After completion of the research there will be a precise understanding about the cost &
resource usage in both the techniques. Further in the research emphasis will be on
affordable housing sector in India.
5) Brief Summary of project (to be duly certified by the faculty guide)

Under the ‘Housing for all till 2022’ initiative of government we have to build about 20 million
affordable homes. To achieve this target we have to switch to new and emerging techniques
of construction. The most promising development of all the new techniques available for
achieving this goal is proved to be precast construction which not only save the cost of
material wastage but also reduces the labour at site, material storage at site, no formwork on
site and time for construction.

But due to the rigid mind set of people in India there are only 3 big players who have
mastered this techniques of construction. This technique has the potential to make the
construction industry way more sustainable and green than it is today.

I’ll be carrying out a precise study of the comparison of cost and resource used in the
conventional and precast techniques, which will give a clearer idea to people for the adoption
of precast technology for the rising housing demand of india.
