12 Teaching Strategies

1. Build Relationships: This is my number one teaching strategy. If you cannot establish
relationships with your students, you can’t expect them to want to listen or learn from
you. (Ruhl, 2015)
2. Establish Goals - My lesson’s objective or essential question for a unit will always be on
the board, and students should be working throughout the unit to answer the question
using information they have learned. (Frey, 2011)
3. Implement Concept based curriculum. Each unit’s essential question will involve the
“crafting, revising, and polishing factual, conceptual, and debatable questions”. (Stern,
2017).
4. Modeling: One way to effectively model for students is to talk about the process of your
thinking aloud, and have students do the same for themselves. (Frey, 2011)
5. Guided Instruction; I will choose to be the guide on the side, as opposed to be front and
center. (Ruhl, 2015)
6. Group Work and Cooperative Learning. Collaboration is key in helping all ranges of
learners. As a part of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and as stated by Frey (2017), “creating is now
considered the highest-order thinking task in the Bloom’s Taxonomy revised for the 21st
century.” When students are able to work together to create, they are able to fulfill the
highest order of learning.
7. Implement Universal Design for Learning. Universal Design for Learning goes hand in
hand with understanding my student’s learning styles. Having various types of learners
in my classroom makes UDL impossible to NOT implement. (Quizalize, 2018)
8. Create Motivation - Using Choice. Integrating choice in the theme of the classroom, you
are able to allow for multiple opportunities for learning. This gives the students more
control of their learning and therefore motivation to learn more. (Ruhl, 2015)
9. Effective Classroom Management. Before classroom management comes building
relationships, and also the implementation of a consistent and fair method of discipline
and expectations. (Quizalize, 2018)
10. Integrate Technology: I plan to use technology to be a teaching tool rather than a
teaching assistant. “Interactive whiteboard or mobile devices can be used to display
images or videos, which helps students visualize new academic concepts” (Quizalize,
2018)
11. Understand learning styles. Using sources such as personality tests and learning style
quizzes allows me to gauge what type of learners I am trying to teach to. For example, if
75% of my students are visual learners, and all I am able to do is lecture or demonstrate,
I won’t be able to reach my students as effectively, and more will struggle to understand
the concepts I am working to teach them. (Ruhl, 2015)
12. Implement Project Based Learning. Project based learning helps students come full
circle in their deep learning. “It is the doing that facilitates understanding” (Frey, 2017)
