[Article in Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 50 (1997), no. 4, 323–379]
Recently Herbert Spohn drew our attention to an error in Section 6 of our paper.
Indeed, the statement of Lemma 6.3 on page 368 is incorrect and consequently
the statement of Theorem 6.1 on pages 365–366 has to be modified slightly. We
indicate these modifications below.
Lemma 6.3 must be replaced by:
L EMMA 6.30 Let Π1 and Π2 be two projector-valued C∞ functions and W be a
matrix-valued distribution on Ω ⊂ Rm
x × Rξ . Assume that
m
Π1 Π2 = Π2 Π1 = 0 , Π jW = W Π j , j = 1, 2 ;
then
(6.190 ) Π1 ({Π2 ,W } − {W , Π2 })Π1 = [Π1W , Π1 {Π2 , Π2 }Π1 ] .
P ROOF : The proof proceeds in the same manner as the proof of Lemma 6.3
until the following identity:
Π1 ({Π2 ,W } − {W , Π2 })Π1 = {Π1 , Π2 }Π1W −W Π1 {Π2 , Π1 } .
Now we use (6.20) and Π1 Π2 = 0 as follows:
{Π1 , Π2 } = {Π1 , Π22 } = {Π1 , Π2 }Π2 − Π1 {Π2 , Π2 } .
Therefore
{Π1 , Π2 }Π1 = −Π1 {Π2 , Π2 }Π1
and similarly
Π1 {Π2 , Π1 } = −Π1 {Π2 , Π2 }Π1 .
Plugging both of these identities into the above formula and using Π21 = Π1 , we
obtain (6.190 ), which completes the proof.
Notice that the right-hand side of (6.190 ) may not be zero. An example can be
built in three space dimensions, where Π1 is a rank 2 orthogonal projector and W
and Π2 are rank 1 orthogonal projectors. Consequently, in view of (6.18), statement
(ii) of Theorem 6.1 has to be modified by replacing Fq with
1 d
Fq0 = [Πq , {λq , Πq }] + Πq Q0 Πq + ∑ (λq − λl )Πq{Πl , Πl }Πq .
2 l=1
Observe that part (i)—which is the main statement of Theorem 6.1—remains un-
changed. Therefore this modification does not affect the applications developed in
the rest of the paper.
Acknowledgment. We are very grateful to Herbert Spohn for his careful read-
ing of our paper and we apologize to our readers for this error.
