1. INTRODUCTION
PT KALIMANTAN PRIMA PERSADA (KPP) is currently planning future development of its coal
mining area at Indexim Port Area in Kaliorang, East Kalimantan. KPP intends to develop its area
for coal stockpiles, coal conveyor structures, and storage buildings. PT ZEKON Indonesia (ZI)
is requested by KPP to provide the soil investigation services at Indexim Port.
This report presents the findings of our subsurface explorations, laboratory testing programs,
geotechnical analysis, and provides recommendations to support KPP future development of
Indexim Port Area. Our opinions and recommendations for the project were developed on the
basis of our project understanding, data acquired for this study, and review of geologic and
geotechnical data relevant to the site.

2. INVESTIGATION METHODOLOGY
The field investigation was carried out for a time period strated from March, 16th through April
5th, 2017. It was fully supervised by one (1) experienced geotechnical engineer and supported
by eight (8) special trained drillers provided by ZI.
Geotechnical Drilling
Total seven (7) geotechnical borings were drilled onshore for 29 m - 30 m depth. All borings
were drilled using YBM-05 and KOKEN drilling rigs. Upon completion the drilling works, ZI has
provided continuous logging for all borings. In the test borings, undisturbed samples of cohesive
soil were obtained using a thin-walled tube sampler pushed into the soil.
The Standard Penetration test (SPT) is a common in situ testing method used to determine the
geotechnical engineering properties of subsurface soils. It is a simple and inexpensive test to
estimate the relative density of soils and approximate shear strength parameters.
Standard Penetration Test, SPT, involves driving a standard thick-walled sample tube into the
ground at the bottom of a borehole by blows from a slide hammer with standard weight and
falling distance. The sample tube is driven 150 mm into the ground and then the number of
blows needed for the tube to penetrate each 150 mm (6 in) up to a depth of 450 mm (18 in) is
recorded. The sum of the number of blows required for the second and third 6 in. of penetration
is reported as SPT blow count value, commonly termed "standard penetration resistance" or the
"N-value". SPT had been performed for 1.5 m intervals into the bottom of each drilling hole.
Split-barrel samplers are used to obtain representative samples suitable for field examination of
soil texture and fabric and for laboratory tests. O.D. ranges from 2 to 4½ inch. A common O.D. is
2 inch with ¼ inch wall thickness (1½ inch sample). Larger diameters are used for sampling
gravelly soils. Lengths are either 18 or 24 inch.
Laboratory testings were carried out on selected samples retrieved from each geotechnical
boring. Total of thirty (30) tubes of undisturbed soil sample (UDS) from seven (7) boreholes
were tested for soil material properties.
Laboratory testing program on UDS samples for this project included the following tests:
2.3 STANDARDS
The following are standards used for conducting the field investigation at Indexim Port Area:
ASTM D2113 (Rock Core Drilling and Sampling of Rock for Site Investigation)
ASTM D1586 (Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soils)
ASTM D1587 (Standard Practice for Thin-Walled Tube Sampling of Fine-Grained Soils for
Geotechnical Purposes)
Laboratory testing on soil samples will follow the standard guidance as follow:
ASTM D1140 (Test Method for Amount of Material in Soils Finer than the No. 200 Sieve)
ASTM D4318 (Test Method for Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity Index of Soils)
ASTM D427 (Standard Test Method for Shringkage Factors of Soils by the Mercury Method)
ASTM D4959 (Test Method for Determination of Water (Moisture) Content of Soil by Direct
Heating Method)
ASTM D2850 (Test Method for Uncolidated, Undrained Compressive Strength of Cohesive
Soils in Triaxial Compression)

Local geological information at Indexim Port Area is obtained from Geological Map of The
Sangatta Quadrangle, Kalimantan and fieldwork results data obtained by ZI team.
Based on geological map, Indexim Port Area is located at Menumbar Formation (Tmme).
Menumbar Formation is consisted of alternating calcareous mudstone and limestone in lower
part and massive sandstone containing glouconite and cross bedding in the upper part. The
calcareous mudstone is grey, soft, and contains foraminifera which indicated an upper part of
Middle Miocene to lower part of Late Miocene age (Schuyleman and Buchan, 1971).
Depositional environment is inner-outer neritic with thickness about 1,000 meter. This
formation can be correlated to the Domaring Formation and Tendehhantu Formation.
Highly recommended to assess the seismic analysis carefully in designing structure which is
close to one of potential earthquake source. Site specific analysis for earthquake analysis will
result an appropriate value of seismic ground acceleration.
The Geological Map of The Sangatta Quadrangle is completely shown in Appendix-E. Part of
Geological Map of The Sangatta Quadrangle to point out Indexim Port Area location is shown as
follow.
Project

Earthquake zone and response spectrum is required in order to determine the effect of design
earthquake on the structure as an equivalent static nominal basic shear load. Earthquake zone
and response spectrum according to GOIR (2010) is depicted below. According to the
Indonesian seismic zone, Indexim Port Area is located at seismic zone with 0.15 g ‐ 0.2 g base
rock peak acceleration.
Response spectrum for project area according to GOIR (SNI 03-1726-2012) is depicted below.
Engineers are often expected to give predictions of soil behavior even when little or no relevant
laboratory test results are available. In many cases only soil identification and index properties
are available. This chapter presents values of engineering properties for types or classes of soil
encountered in field.
The scope of this chapter is limited to correlations with soil classification tests, index properties,
and Standard Penetration N-values. Interested readers are encouraged to refer to works by
Kulhawy and Mayne (1990) and Carter and Bentley (1991) which present a comprehensive
compilation of correlations.
It must be emphasized that predictions based on correlation can never be substituted for proper
testing. In general, all correlations must be considered approximate since various factors such
as sensitivity, stress history, and aging can significantly influence soil properties.
The assessment of soil parameters will be divided into three (3) area according to three (3)
general field exploration data which are AREA 1: GTK-01 through GTK-03, AREA 2: GTK-04
through GTK-06, and AREA 3: GTK-07. “GTK” refers to geotechnical boring holes. Soil
parameters will consist of total stress parameters, effective stress parameters, modulus of
elasticity, and unit weight.
The summary of correlated soil parameters with field exploration data will be presented in
tables and charts. Tables shows typical value of soil parameter whilst charts presents the soil
parameter value distribution according to soil type and depth of exploration.
Tables and charts of soil parameters for engineering purposes from each point of field
exploration are viewed as follow.

In addition controlling soil parameters that have been correlated with field exploration data, all
UDS samples are also tested in geotechnical laboratory to supply additional soil parameters.
According to field exploration results, there are thirty (30) UDS samples collected from total
seven (7) boreholes. The testings in laboratory consist of index properties and strength
properties.
Unit Weight
Purpose: To determine the weight of soil per volume unit on wet and dry condition.
Natural Moisture Content
Purpose : To determine the amount of water present in a quantity of soil in terms of its dry
weight and to provide general correlations with strength, settlement, workability, and
other properties.
Specific Gravity
Purpose : To determine the specific gravity of the soil grains.
Atterberg Limits including Shrinkage Limit
Purpose : To describe the consistency and plasticity of fine-grained soils with varying
degrees of moisture. A shrinkage limit test gives a quantitative indication of how much
moisture can change before any significant volume change and to also indication of change
in volume.
Sieve Analysis
Purpose : To determine the percentage of various grain sizes. The grain size distribution is
used to determine the textural classification of soils (i.e., sand, silty clay, etc.) which in turn
is useful in evaluating the engineering characteristics of soils such as permeability and
susceptibility to frost action.
Hydrometer Analysis
Purpose : To determine distribution (percentage) of particle sizes smaller than No. 200
sieve and identify the silt, clay and colloids percentage in the soil.

The calculation of soil bearing capacity is reffering to Terzaghi (1943). The boreholes references
have been covering estimated area subjected to be filled for coal stockpile. There are seven (7)
boreholes at Indexim Port Area which have been used to calculate the soil bearing capacity
underneath coal stockpile. These references have been used to assess the appropriate soil
parameters for calculation of soil bearing capacity and combined with laboratory data.
Table 9 : Summary of Soil Bearing Capacity Calculation at Indexim Port Area, Kaliorang
Based on soil bearing capacity calculations above, maximum coal stockpile height at AREA 1 is
limited to 10 m while maximum coal stockpile height at AREA 2 is limited to 15 m. Lowest value
of safety factor of soil bearing capacity has identified at AREA 1 (GTK-01, GTK-02, and GTK-03).
This problem arises as a consequence of loose material on top ground layer. Recompact all top
ground layer or replace with better material quality will be an alternative solution to increase
the soil bearing capacity at coal stockpile area.
Placing additional load over an existing compressible ground (e.g. cohesive soil) will generate a
consolidation settlement for a period of time. In this case, a potential settlement might occur on
Clayey SILT soil. The amount and time duration of settlement will be depending on the soil
properties (e.g. Cc and cv). Soil parameters for settlement analysis are determined based on UDS
samples which had been taken during field exploration works and had been tested in
laboratory.
The settlement calculation is accomodated three (3) types of coal stockpile height (4 m, 6 m, and
8 m).
The presence of Silty SAND layer at AREA 2 has accelerated the consolidation settlement at
AREA 2 compare to the other area. All AREA will generate slightly similiar amount of total
consolidation settlement. All AREA is suitable for coal stockpile with maximum height of 8 m for
minimum treatment.
Slope stability analysis was performed for slope around coal stockpile at Indexim Port Area. The
analysis performed using the numerical modeling program SLIDE (Rocscience, 2010). Stability
analysis was computed by SLIDE using the GLE/Morgenstern and Price method (Fredlund and
Krahn, 1977; Morgenstern and Price, 1965). The groundwater being modeled using water
surface method (γwater = 9.81 kN/m3).
The slope being modelled based on cross section of AREA 1 and AREA 2. Material properties for
slope stability analysis are presented in the following table below.

Height (m)
Based on slope stability analysis results, it can be concluded that the slope condition is safe at
static and dynamic loading state at AREA 2. A little bit critical slope condition is at AREA 1.
Maximum coal stockpile height at AREA 1 is limited to 6 m under seismic condition.
There will be 3 (three) types of shallow foundation which will be analyzed in this chapter. We
have already divided the shallow foundations into several dimensions such as 1 m x 1 m x1 m,
1.5 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m, and 2 m x 2 m x 2 m that is width, length, and thickness respectively. The
calculation of axial force has included the self weight of footing and weight of soil over footing.
The variations of embedment depth (D) of shallow foundation are 1.0 m to 1.5 m below the
surface. Total seven (7) of boreholes are considered as references in determining soil
parameters for bearing capacity calculation of shallow foundation. Also additional data collected
from laboratory results have been taken into account to perform analysis of bearing capacity
calculation.

According to the bearing capacity calculation results above have shown that all locations will be
suitable for using shallow foundation. However, settlement analysis should be performed
whenever the bearing capacity has been adequate to support the design load.
Further analysis in designing of a shallow foundation is settlement check. Even the foundation
bearing capacity has passed the design criterion but sometimes the settlement will be the most
important role that should be considered while designing a shallow foundation. There is a
maximum tolerable amount of settlement that should be fulfilled for shallow foundation design.
For framed structure is allowed to settle not more than 5-10 cm or even less and for masonry
structure is restricted only about 2.5-5.0 cm (Sowers, 1962). Settlement analysis will follow
similar foundation types as in bearing capacity analysis.

The calculation of axial force has included the self weight of footing and weight of soil over
footing. Settlement analysis has been set for maximum 50 mm of tolerable settlement limit.
Typical vertical load of (1m x 1m x 0.5m) foundation is varying from 3 to 5 tons. For a
foundation of (1.5m x 1.5m x 0.6m) type could support vertical load about 11 to 18 tons. And for
(2m x 2m x 0.7m) foundation type could support vertical load about 30 to 48 tons.
The simplest approach to structural design of footings is the rigid method (also known as
conventional method). This method assumes the footing is much more rigid than the underlying
soils, which means any distortions in the footing are too small to significantly impact the
distribution of bearing pressure. This simple distribution makes it easy to compute the flexural
stresses and deflections (differential settlements) in the footing. For analysis purposes, the
footing becomes an inverted and simply loaded two-way slab, which means the shears,
moments and deflections may be easily computed using the principles of structural mechanics.
The engineer can then select the appropriate footing thickness and reinforcement.
Although this type of analysis is appropriate for spread footings, it does not accurately model
mat foundations because the width-to-thickness ratio is much greater in mats, and the
assumption of rigidity is no longer valid. Portions of a mat beneath colums and bearing walls
settle more than the portions with less load, which means the bearing pressure will be greater
beneath the heavily-loaded zones. This redistribution of bearing pressure is most pronounced
when the ground is stiff compared to the mat.
Then pseudo-coupled method (Liao, 1991; Horvath, 1993) is an attempt to overcome the lack of
coupling in the Winkler method while avoiding the difficulties of the coupled method. It does so
by using springs that act independently, but have different ks values depending on their location
on the mat. To properly model the real response of a uniform soil, the springs along the
perimeter of the mat should be stiffer than those in the center. Model studies indicate that
reasonable results are obtained when ks values along the perimeter of the mat are about twice
those in the center (ACI, 1993).
The subgrade modulus (ks) values for each type of shallow foundation are presented in the
following tables below.
Once the design loads have been defined, we need to develop foundation designs that satisfy
several performance requirements. The first category is strength requirements, which are
intended to avoid catastrophic failures. There are two (2) types of strength requirements and
have been described as follow:
Geotechnical strength analysis are almost always performed using allowable stress design
(ASD) methods.
In general, the ultimate axial capacity of deep foundation (e.g. bored pile or driven pile) can be
obtained as the summation of tip resistance plus skin friction resistance. In practice, the
calculation of deep foundation capacity will be reffering to Meyerhof (1976) when dealing with
driven pile and O’Neill & Reese (1999) while dealing with bored pile.
To properly select and design deep foundations, we need to understand how they transfer
structural loads into the ground. These load-transfer mechanism depend on the type of load
being imposed, so it is convenient to divide structural loads into 2 (two) categories:
1. Axial loads
Applied tensile or compressive loads that act parallel to the axis of the foundation. These
loads induce either tension or compression in the foundation, but no flexure. If the
foundation is vertical, then the axial load is equal to the vertical applied load.
2. Lateral loads
Those that act perpendicular to the axis of the foundation. This category includes shear and
moment loads.
There are two (2) types of deep foundation that will be analyzed in this section. The first type is
concrete spun pile (OD. 300 mm, 400 mm, and 500 mm) and bored pile (diameter 600 mm, 800
mm, and 1000 mm).
Allowable axial capacity has been calculated referring to Engineering Manual (EM 1110-1-1904)
with minimum factor of safety of about 2.0 while the allowable pullout capacity has been
calculated with minimum factor of safety of about 2.0. The allowable bearing capacities of
concrete spun pile for each borehole references are given in the following table and also
presented graphically in the next figures:

Figure 47 : Bearing Capacity of Concrete Spun Pile (OD. 500 mm) – AREA 3, Indexim Port Area
It is recommended to drive concrete spun pile until bedrock (N-SPT > 50) in order to receive
better pile bearing capacity and also minimizing the potential of concrete spun pile to settle.
Final set criteria for driving a concrete spun pile is limited for 10 blows/10 mm and the
maximum driving stress is limited to 0.6 fc’. Pile driving analyzer should be performed at the
beginning of construction to verify actual pile foundation bearing capacity which had been
calculated theoretically by using the minimum safety factor of 2. Beware of group efficiency in
designing pile group system. Consider the effeciency effect for lateral loading is recommended.
Allowable axial capacity has been calculated referring to Engineering Manual (EM 1110-1-1904)
with minimum factor of safety of about 2.5 while the allowable pullout capacity has been
calculated with minimum factor of safety of about 2.5. The allowable bearing capacities of
concrete bored pile for each area at Indexim Port are given in the following table and also
presented graphically in the next figures.

Figure 56 : Bearing Capacity of Concrete Bored Pile (D1000) – AREA 3, Indexim Port Area
It is recommended to bore concrete bored pile until bedrock (N-SPT > 50) in order to receive
better pile bearing capacity and also minimizing the potential of concrete bored pile to settle.
Pile driving analyzer should be performed at the beginning of construction to verify actual pile
foundation bearing capacity which had been calculated theoretically by using the minimum
safety factor of 2.5. Beware of group efficiency in designing pile group system. Consider the
effeciency effect for lateral loading is recommended.
Fully saturated soil combines with strong earthquake motion could potentially trigger the
liquefaction. Liquefaction is a condition in which the soil lost its effective stress due to the
increase of pore water pressure caused by cyclic motion of an earthquake.
The analysis was done using the correlation between cyclic shear stress ratio (SSR) and SPT
blowcount. Cyclic shear stress ratio (SSR) is the function of spectral acceleration on the ground
and soil overburden stress. The five colored lines (M= 5.25, 6.0, 6.75, 7.5 and 8.5) represent
different earthquake magnitude. These lines were obtained from the fitting the set of history of
earthquakes data worldwide.
The liquefaction potential was conducted only at soil layer that contains sand (e.g. SAND and
silty SAND) while other types of soils such as clay, silt, and gravel are not considered to liquefy.
Points located on the right side of the magnitude lines are considerably safe against liquefaction.
In the other hand, the points located on the left side of the lines are considered to be very likely
to liquefy.
The analysis of liquefaction potential at Indexim Port Area are shown as follows.

Based on the analysis results, liquefaction happened on the sub-soil at AREA 2. The summary of
liquefaction potential analysis on each area is presented below.
Area Status
The analysis based on seven (7) boreholes of soil investigation data found a major concern on
the planned location. The concern also have very high accuracy to exist in real construction
project. The concern is countermeasure against liquefaction. The issue appear at most of the
AREA 1 and AREA 2. Therefore, technical recommendations are made this potential hazard.
Brief discussion of technical recommendations are stated as follows.
Pile/Deep Foundation
The current report does not provide settlement analysis of deep foundation since there will be
many parameters would involve during the analysis such as the deep of foundation, the size of
foundation, and whether it single or group pile. Those parameters have significant impact in the
evaluation of pile settlement. During Detail Engineering Design stages, the engineers must
conduct its own analysis based on the expected design.
Reducing excessive settlement while improving soil’s stiffness and shear strength can be done
by means of complete/partial soil replacement. It means replacing the highly compressible (e.g.
soft clay, silty soils) material to less compressible one (e.g. sandy, gravel, even rock). Some of
these methods are so-called stone columns, sand compacted piling, soil mixing, cement mixing,
among others. These techniques are well tested on various large projects however the
constructions are costly.
Stone columns and compacted sand piling are aimed to replace the compressible parts of the
subsoil into less compressible one as well as increasing its stiffness and shear strength. In
addition, the two methods drain water pressure quickly, so that final stage of soil settlement can
be achieved at faster rate.
In the other side, soil mixing and cement mixing method use admixture material into the
unsuitable/highly compressive soils. The basis of these mixing systems is that the cement is
ejected by pump while crane-mounted-boring machine simultaneously mixing the soil and
cement. Cement interaction with pore water within subsoil resulting in an in-situ hardening.
Thus, increasing shear strength of soil as well as significantly decreasing the compressibility of
the surrounding area.
From the analysis, both of the countermeasure techniques can be used. Deep/pile foundation
shall be used within the plant building/infrastructure area, or the area beyond the building
which has strict allowable settlement. Any heavy structure, mechanical and electrical major
equipment, vessels, pipe supports, conveyors, etc. shall use deep/pile foundation. In the other
hand, the area which do not have strict allowable settlement such as open space, road,
stockpiling, among others, may use sand column and in-situ soil mixing.
All mentioned recommendations are temporary, future detailed analysis should be performed
before constructions. General recommendations to verify detailed analysis result that shall be
undertaken by contractor :
Performed plate bearing test at location subjected to be place shallow foundation and or
coal stockpile by following the designed load/stress that has been stated by conslutant.
Use appropriate hammer for piling and recommend to select heavier hammer with small
height of hammer drop.
Final set criterion for piling construction using concrete spun pile is limited for 10 blow per
10 mm penetration.
Final set criterion for piling construction using steel pile is limited for 15 blow per 10 mm
penetration.
Performed Pile Driving Analysis (PDA) testing for several piles that have been constructed
to verify the actual its axial capacity.
If required, performed lateral load capacity on constructed piles for foundation which will
be subjected by high lateral load.
The recommendations presented in this report are based on our current understanding of the
site conditions. The nature of subsurface conditions may vary between tested locations and
from the assumptions discussed. Variations between the tested locations may not become
evident until construction. The owner’s geotechnical engineer on site should observe the
exposed subsurface during construction. If the subsurface conditions encountered during
construction differ from those encountered by the site investigation, PTZI should be notified so
that we might review our recommendations in light of such changes and provide a written
modification or verification of changes.
Unanticipated soil conditions are commonly encountered that cannot fully determined by a
limited number of explorations or soil samples. Such unexpected conditions frequently results
in additional project cost in order to build the project as designed. Therefore, a contingency for
unanticipated conditions should be included in the construction budget and schedule.
Our professional services have been performed, our findings derived, and our recommendations
prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and
standards. PTZI is not responsible for the conclusions, opinions, or recommendations of others
based on this data.
Our investigation did not include any assessment or evaluation of environmental conditions or
contamination in the soil.
This report is respectfully submitted to KALIMANTAN PRIMA PERSADA. If you have questions
or require additional information, please contact the undersigned at (+62-22- 87771374).
