OBJECTIVES
At the end of the learning discussion, at least 80% of the students should be
able to:

a. Identify the concept of El Niño and La Niño

b. Compare the El Niño phenomenon from the La Niña phenomenon

c. Recognize the effects of El Niño and La Niña to humans and their environment

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: El Niño and La Niña

B. Concepts: El Niño is the abnormal heating of Earth’s ocean surface in

the Pacific and is caused when trade winds allow warm water
from the Pacific to flow east.
La Nina is the abnormal cooling of Earth’s ocean surface in
the Pacific and caused when the temperatures drop in the
pacific, also being blown east.

C. Skills: Identifying, describing, distinguishing

The game will be 4 pics 1 word.

The teacher will show 4 pictures that will serve The students will participate in
as clues for the topic that will be discussed. guessing the answers in the 4 pics 1
word game.

- Warming

- Cooling

- El Niño
- El Niña

“From the correct answers you’ve got a while “Ma’am, our topic for today is all

for today?”

C. Lesson Proper

“What comes to your mind when you hear the “El Niño is the season of drought.”
word El Niño?”

“How about La Niña?” “La Niña is the season of massive

rainfall.”

The teacher will discuss the El Niño

phenomenon and compare it to the normal
condition of ocean surface temperature.

The teacher will discuss the La Niña

phenomenon and compare it to the normal
condition of ocean surface temperature.

The teacher will post three charts in the board.

The charts contain the normal condition, El Niño
condition and La Niña condition. Three
representatives from the class will differentiate
each condition using the key words given by the
teacher. One student who will get the correct
answer the fastest will win.

From the recitation chips given by the teacher

to the students during the discussion, the
students will flip it over to check for any numbers
or shapes written in it. The teacher will ask the
students on who got a particular number or
shape that the teacher wants. The student who
will get the desired number or shape in their
recitation chip will answer the following guide
questions.

Guide Questions:

1. What is El Niño? 1. “El Niño is the abnormal heating

of the ocean’s surface.

trade winds are normal, and
there is an increase in the cold
water which is called upwelling;
while in El Niño, the trade winds
weaken, the ocean surface
temperature gets warmer than
usual and the upwelling halts.”

6. Explain the difference between normal 6. ““In normal conditions, the ocean
conditions from the La Niña condition. surface temperature and the
trade winds are normal, and
there is an increase in the cold
water which is called upwelling;
while in La Niña, the trade winds
get stronger, the ocean surface
temperature gets colder and the
upwelling increases rapidly.”

E. Application and Valuing

“As a student and as a responsible citizen “As a student we can contribute to

of this country, what do you think can you the community by telling them to
contribute to the community in preventing conserve water when El Niño
the possible bad effects of El Niño and La comes, and keeping first aid kits and
