 Extra numbers attempted will not be marked.
 A silent non- programmable calculator may be used.

SECTION A

. .
1. Without using tables or a calculator, evaluate
.
2. Express 0.341666…… in the form where q ≠ 0

3. If n = x√ , express m, in terms of n and x

4. A fair is rolled once. Find the probability that the outcome is:
i) Prime number
ii) A factor of 4
−5 6
5. Given the matrix P = , find P
−2 2
6. The table below shows the number of goals scored by a team in a series of football matches

If the mean number of goals is 3, find x

15−x2
7. Solve the equation: =x

P +q2
8. Given that p ∗ q = find (4*2)*-1
9. Factorise x − 9xy completely
10. Find the solution of the line passing through point A(3, 4) and parallel to the line 2y = x + 1

SECTION B (60 Marks)

11. Four students; Kakidi, lubanga, Murungi and Nyende went to a canteen
Kakidi bought 4 pens, 6 rulers and 1 graph book
Lubanga bought 10 pens, 5 rulers
Murungi bought 3 pens, 3 graph books
Nyende bought 5 pens, 2 rulers and 8 graph books
The cost of a pen, a ruler and a graph book were shs. 400, shs. 1200 and shs. 1000 respectively.

(a) Write a
(i) 4 x 3 matrix for the items bought by the four students.
(ii) 3 x 1 matrix for the cost of each item
(b) Use the matrices in (a) to calculate the amount of money spent by each
student. (c) If each student was to buy 4 pens, 10 rulers and 6 graph books, how
much money would be spent by all the four students?

12. Town B is 100km away from A on bearing of 1350. Town D is on a bearing
of 0900 from B, 124km apart. Town C 160km away from town D is on
bearing 0300 from D.
(a) Using a scale of 1cm to represent 20km, make an accurate drawing to show
the relative positions and distances of town A, B, C and D.
(b) Determine the
(i) Shortest distance and bearing of town C from A
(ii) Distance and bearing of town B from town C

13. Given the equation of a curve y = 2x + 5x − 3

(i) Copy and complete the table y = 2x + 5x − 3

(ii) On the same axes and using the same scales. Plot the graphs of y = x + 1 and
y = 2x + 5x − 3
(iii) Using the graphs solve the equation x + 2x − 2 = 0

14. The table below shows the weight (in kg) of 40 students of a class and their
corresponding frequency.

(a) (i) State the modal class

(ii) Calculate the mean weight of the students
(b) Draw a histogram and use it to estimate the modal weight of the pupils.

15. a) A bag contains 5 mangoes and 7 tomatoes: Two fruits are selected at random from
the bag without replacement. Find the probability that;
(i) both fruits are mangoes
(ii) the second fruit is a tomato

(b) A coin is tossed twice. What is the probability that;

(i) two heads appear on top

(ii) either a head or a tail appears on top

16. The figure below shows a rectangular piece of paper ABCD which has been folded
along EF such that C maps onto G

Given that EC = 3cm and FC = 4cm; AB = (x + 2)cm

(a) Find
(ii) the area of triangle ECF
(iii) an expression for the area of shaded region ABFGED in terms of x
(b) If the shaded area is 43cm2, show that 2x2 + 7x - 49 = 0: Hence find the length
of AD

17. By shading the unwanted regions, show the regions which satisfies the inequalities
x+y≤3
y > x−4
y + 7x ≥ −4
Find the area of the unwanted region
