necessary materials, accessories, tools and equipment is available.

7.2 Job Conditions

 Roof waterproofing work shall commence only when weather conditions will permit
materials to be applied in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
 Concrete surface should be practically dry and ready to receive the waterproofing as per
manufacturer’s recommendation.
 Concrete should be free from ridges and indentations and should be to a true and even
surface. Do not apply membrane primer to damp or wet surfaces.

 Delivery, storage and handling of all materials forming the part of roof waterproofing
system shall be in strict compliance with the manufacture’s written instructions for each
material and as mentioned in the specifications.
 Materials shall be delivered at site in sealed containers. Membrane, flashing, and
adhesives shall be stored at site in clean and dry areas.
 Protection boards shall be stored flat and above the ground surface.

7.4 Material Inspection

Upon delivery of waterproofing membrane and other materials of the roof waterproofing
system to the site, the Contractor shall notify to Company in advance for inspection and
acceptance of the materials.

7.5 Coordination

Prior to commencement of roof waterproofing works, Coordinate with MEP works and
ensure that all the related MEP services/pipe penetrations/pads completed and inspected

7.6 Laying Of Lightweight Foam Concrete

 Concrete surface preparation and laying of foam concrete shall be laid as per the
manufacturer written instructions and installer’s method statement as attached in

MS-014-0.0 Page 6
China Harbour Engineering Co.L.L.C.

annexure-1
 Sloping ribs using sand/cement mix are formed on the roof based on minimum 1% slope
toward the drains. Minimum thickness (50mm) is assumed at the lowest levels i.e. near
drains with thickness increasing away from drains.
 Cleaning and brushing of existing concrete surface shall be done prior to laying of foam
concrete.
 All pipes and drains penetrating the slab shall be fixed and clearance to be taken for all
MEP works.
 The light weight foam concrete shall consist of cement and foaming agent, mixed in the
ratios as specified in the manufacturer recommendations.
 The machine mixed light weight foam concrete will be pumped and placed between the
guide slopes and leveled using aluminum/wooden floats to achieve the required slope.
 The light weight concrete shall be cured for three days and then shall be kept open to sun
for a full day to make the surface dry enough for subsequent applications.

7.7 Surface Preparation and Application of Primer

 Concrete surfaces to be waterproofed must be clean, dry, smooth and free of any oil,
grease, protruding nails, wires or sharp edges.
 All internal angles must be smoothly finished with cement sand fillet and external angles
to be chamfered.
 Any protruding portion of ribs (made for lightweight concrete) shall also be leveled to
obtain smooth surface.
 Apply the approved Duprime Bitumen primer as per MAR no. C0008-Rev00 over the
surface of foam concrete in strict adherence to manufacturer’s recommendation. Cold
applied solvent based bituminous primer “Duprime” is applied on the lightweight
concrete surface at the rate of 5-6 m² per liter per coat depending on the porosity of the
substrate.
 Primer is applied evenly on the substrate using roller or brush.
 Primer is allowed to dry for about 6-12hrs as per manufacturer’s instructions “tack-free”
dry before installing the bitumen membrane.

7.8 Membrane Installation

 One layer of “Dulas PG”, 4mm thick torch applied bitumen waterproofing membrane is
applied on the primed concrete surface as per manufacturer recommendations.
 Reinforcing strips of membrane shall be torch applied over the corner fillets; changes of
direction around pipe penetrations/roof drain outlets and fully bonded to the substrate
prior to installation of membrane.
 Apply membrane free of wrinkles and free of wavy edges. Before fixing the membrane,
unroll the membrane on the areas where it will be fixed and then check whether it is
MS-014-0.0 Page 7
China Harbour Engineering Co.L.L.C.

matching with the profile of the area, including the overlaps.

 All lap joints of sheets shall be torched and welded with 100mm side laps and 125mm
end laps. Apply heat to both sides of overlaps in proper order and immediately press the
overlaps.
 A separate operation will then proceed by sealing all the overlaps by running down a
heated spatula along the edge of the top layer.
 On up-stand areas the membrane is extended over the corner strips installed earlier,
taken above and tucked in to the groove formed in up stand concrete.
 The membrane is fully heat sealed at all side and end laps. All seems must be heat sealed
from the top to ensure watertight laps.
 A final inspection will be carried out after the membrane has been laid, torched and
seamed by Sub contractor/Contractor and company.

7.9 Water Test

 After the final inspection, any visible damage shall be repaired by welding a patch of
same membrane extending at least 100mm from the edge of the damaged area. The
roof will be flooded with water for a depth of 25mm minimum at highest point and
100mm maximum for a period of 24 hours. Roof drains shall be plugged prior to the
flooding.
 The soffit of the roof slab shall be checked for any seepage or dampness. If there is any
seepage/dampness, then the repair works shall be carried out and again the leak test
shall be repeated for the repaired portion as per the above procedure.
 Upon successful completion of the water test, then water shall be drained off from roof
and the membrane allowed for drying before subsequent materials are placed on it.

7.10 Geo Textile Fabric and Insulation Board Installation

 A layer of non woven geo textile separation layer shall be laid immediately above the
installed waterproofing membrane.
 The geo textile fabric GT-16 shall be laid by tack bonded overlaps of 30-50mm and shall
have 100g/m² thickness.
 A layer of 50mm thick extruded polystyrene thermal insulation board (“Isoboard”, 32-35
Kg/m3 density) shall be loosely laid above the geo textile layer as per manufacturer
recommendations.
 Over the insulation board, one layer of geo textile fabric GT-20 shall be laid as a
separation layer in the same manner as stated above.

MS-014-0.0 Page 8
China Harbour Engineering Co.L.L.C.

7.11 Laying of Concrete Tiles & Gravel Filling

insulation boards.
 Gravel shall be filled around the rain water pipes with 70-80mm thick crushed gravel and
leveled.

7.12 Aluminum Flashing And Sealant Installation

 After the termination of membrane, the skirting system shall be fixed with approved
aluminum flashing as per the details shown in the drawing.
 Flashing on vertical surface shall be fixed with screws at a distance of minimum 300mm
centre to centre.
 Membrane termination should extend a minimum of 150mm above top level of gravel /
tiles and shall be covered with strips of protection boards at exposed surface as per the
details shown in the drawing.
 Aluminum flashing shall be pointed with suitable sealant as per the approved material.

8. HEALTH & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

 All works shall be performed in accordance with the Company HSE Guidelines and
Contractor HSE plan and procedures.
 Site engineer/Supervisor will ensure that Personal Protective Equipment is worn by site
personnel at all times during construction activities.
 Prior to commencement of any activity, all operatives will be given a general site safety
induction by Safety Officer; the site Engineer/Supervisors will also conduct Tool Box talks
and method statement briefings to the personnel involved in operation. Attendance
records will be regularly updated.
 General PPE for all operatives will consist of safety footwear, safety helmets and high
visibility vest. Specific PPE will be issued as necessary. Operatives working with roof
water proofing will wear protective cover all, hand gloves. Other PPE requirements will
be addressed as the work proceeds and other hazards become a factor i.e. working at
height and leading edge of a structure.
 Any lifting equipment used for lifting operation should have a valid certificated by a third
party agency.
 As the work proceeds, adequate work platform and scaffolding to be provided where
necessary.
 Proper edge protection shall be provided, if it is not practicable to provide edge
protection, safety harnesses will be worn, fixed to suitable anchor points.
 Specific Safety risk assessment plan is made and refer to a separate document (doc ref:
