The June 2013 Revolts and their aftermath
This course will study cultural, cinematic, literary, and political works produced on the
June 2013 revolts in Brazil and the broader background of Lulismo against which those
protests took place. The June revolts in Brazil are inserted into a larger framework of
crisis of the pact known as Lulismo and the international context of autonomist
movements such as Occupy, the Arab Spring and the Spanish Indignados. We will study
the uniqueness of June in that constellation, as a set of uprisings that did not emerge in an
economic crisis (as in Spain) or against a dictatorship (as in Egypt or Tunisia) and did not
leave the political system untouched (as did, to a great degree, the US Ocuppy). Attention
will be devoted to the largest corruption investigation in history, the complex set of
juridical / police operations known as Car Wash, in their own right a major spin-off of the
June protests. The course reaches the impeachment proceedings against President
Rousseff (2016) and the persistence of the oligarchic political structure labeled
pemedebismo by philosopher Marcos Nobre. Readings will be drawn from political
scientists, philosophers, anthropologists, community leaders, sociologists, as well as
novelists. A number of films and TV series will also be featured.
