FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

UNIT I

1. a) State and explain the principle of minimum potential energy. 7 Marks

b) Briefly explain the concept of plane stress and plane strain with examples. 7 Marks

2. For the bar assemblages shown in figure, determine the nodal displacements, element stresses 14 Marks
and support reactions. Take Est=200 GPa, Ast = 4X10-4 m2, EAl=70 GPa, AAl = 2X10-4 m2.

UNIT II

3. Consider the plane truss shown in figure. Determine the nodal displacements and support 14 Marks
reactions. Take E=2X105 N/mm2, A=1500 mm2.

4. a) Derive the stiffness matrix for truss element. 6 Marks

b) The coordinates of plane truss element is given as 1(20, 35), and 2(70, 90) mm has the 8 Marks
displacement values [-0.01, 0.02, -0.01, -0.03]Tmm with the material properties 200GPa
Young’s modulus. Calculate the stiffness matrix, load vector and strain energy if the
cross sectional area of the truss is 100mm2.

UNIT III

5. Calculate the stiffness matrix for the triangular element shown in figure? Co-ordinates are 14 Marks
given in mm. Assume plane stress conditions. Take E=2.1X105 N/mm2, ʋ=0.25, t=10mm.

6. For the axisymmetric element shown in figure, determine the stiffness matrix. 14 Marks
Let E=2.1 X 105 N/mm2 and  =0.25. Coordinates are shown in millimeters.

UNIT IV
7. A 4 noded rectangular element is shown in figure. Determine (i) Jacobian Matrix (ii) Strain – 14 Marks
Displacement Matrix (iii) Element Stresses. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2, ʋ = 0.25, ξ = η = 0,
U= [0, 0, 0.003, 0.004, 0.006, 0.004, 0, 0]T mm. Assume Plane Stress conditions. (x, y ) co-
ordinates are in mm. Assume natural coordinates   0,   0.

8. A composite wall consists of three materials of different thermal conductivities i.e., 20W/mK, 14 Marks
30W/mK, 50W/mK of thickness 0.3m, 0.15m, 0.15m respectively. The outer surface is
200Cand the inner surface is exposed to the convective heat transfer coefficient 25W/m2K at
3000C. Determine the temperature distribution within the wall.

UNIT V
9. For the loaded beam shown in figure, determine the slope and deflection at node 2 using 14 Marks
finite element concept. Take EI=900 Nm2.

10. Evaluate the eigen vectors and eigen values for the stepped bar shown in figure. 14 Marks
Take E= 200GPa and specific weight 7850 kg/m3. Draw mode shapes. Take A1= 300 mm2
and A2 = 150 mm2.
