The usual type of synthetic upper & lining materials used in shoemaking consist of some kind of fabric backer
coated with PVC. The material is classified in two ways.

 According to the characteristics of the backing cloth or

 According to the nature of the PVC coating. For example, solid expanded and micro porous.

SHOE LEATHER

Leather is still considered as the pre-eminent material because of its unique physical properties.

This is not to say that the shoe designer must choose only leather. But it is a fact that any other material which
has been found to be suitable for shoe invariably posses.

DESIRABLE PROPERTIES OF THE SHOE MATERIALS

1. Area of the material

A very important difference exists between: a large area of leather and a similar area of fabricated sheet.
Leather lends to vary a great deal:

Not only from hide to hide but also From point on the same hide, Part of the art of shoemaking, Therefore, is
concerned with:

 The correct matching of quality variable: with demands of service; of the foot in action.

Fabricated sheets, on the other hand, are approximately uniform in their properties, hence the present
tendency to find proper leather substitute.

2-Elasticity & Plasticity

Stretch, give or flexibility is important quality characteristics in the shoe material since any method of shoe
manufacture involves:

 The molding of a flat material to the curved surface of the last.

3-Flexibility

Flexibility is somewhat a kin to elasticity and plasticity. This property mean:

 The ease with which the material can be bent and then retain its original state without distortion.

4-Permeability

Permeability means: admitting the passage of fluids etc. it is the ability of material to pass:
 Air, water vapour and water which are so important to foot comfort.

5-Thermal Conductivity

Version 1.0
PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE HAND OUT
Author: BATA TRAINING ACADEMY P a g e 22
Thermal conduction means the transmission of heat from places of higher to places of lower temperature
in a substance. It is therefore:

 The case with which a shoe material transmits heat. It is another important factor contributing to
foot comfort.

6. Substance

Substance refers to the thickness of a material which is expressed either as:

 heavy, medium, light or thin or

 Measured in millimeters and is a critical property in any shoe material.

7. Surface Characteristics

Surface characteristics refer to a variety of things specific to the material. They usually mean:

 Color, texture, grain structure, grain pattern and freedom from blemishes.

8. Strength & Stretch

Present method of shoe manufacture generally requires the material to be subjected to

 Considerable tension to achieve moulding on the last.

Stretch is one of the hidden differences present in the material because of its structure. Shoe parts are
normally cut with:

 The strength or tightness in a heel - to toe direction.

Any error in judgment can easily result in a serious distortion of the upper.

9. Working ease

The material should be capable of being:

 easily cut into sections,

And then joined in different positions or to different materials by any one of the following means:

 A thread seam, thong, metallic attachment, cement or weld.

A shoe designer should note that there exists a close link between:

 The material and the method of construction.

10. Abrasion Resistance The ability of shoe material to withstand abrasion or wearing out by rubbing is one
of the most desirable properties. The abrasive wear of the shoe is the first cause of their wanting repairs.

11. Slipperiness

Shoes are worn under different conditions or on different surfaces. Even then a soling material is required
to be:

- Non slippery: not prone to sudden or accidental sliding.

12. Maintenance Ease

This relates to the immediate purpose of how the material takes on the finish and also to the eventual
effect on maintenance of the shoe during service.

13. Chemical constitution & Reaction with the foot:

The long term effect of shoe materials on the foot and that of the foot on the shoe should be found
out by proper testing survives:

 Product reliability and

Finishes and Textures
The surface of man-made shoe upper materials can be given just about any kind of textured appearance
desired. They can be made smooth or gloosy: given a grained appearance, napped surface.

Finishes

Aniline The name given to the particular transparent dye used to color dyed leather.
Aniline leather-Leather that has been dyed through with aniline dyes. Pure aniline
leathers represent approximately 5 percent of all upholstery leathers produced
worldwide. Sometimes topped with a protein, resin, or lacquer protective coating; can
also be waxed.
Antique finish Consists of a dark stain applied to give a mellow or weathered appearance.
Brushed off Overall antiquing of the entire shoe.
Glazed Similar to an aniline finish except that the leather surface is polished to a high luster by
the action of glass on steel rollers under tremendous pressure.
Patent Leather with a glossy impermeable finish produced by successive coats of drying oils,
varnish, or synthetic resins. Today it is usually produced with vinyl or urethane coating,
is available in a variety of colors and textures.
Satin Rarely used term to describe a finish that is somewhere between mattee and highly
glossed plates.

Surface Textures
Boarded Full grain leather which has been folded with the grain side inwards and creased in two
or three direction by mechanical means.
Buffed The grain side leather is buffed with an abrasive wheel, leaving a soft velvet finish. This
process removes most superfluous surface imperfections. The leather is also known as
corrected grain.
Full grain High quality calfskin or cowhide which has not been buffed. In side leather usually
produced in softer textures.
Suede The flesh side of the leather is buffed to produce a fine nap, applied to calf, kid, etc.

Information Sheet- 5.1 UPPER MATERIALS

Leather: Natural leather is durable, comfortable, supportive, and breathable(to a certain extent). It is form
fitting and will stretch over time. It’s grainy appearance and the rough edges left where it has been cut identify
natural leather. People are familiar with natural leather and identify it with quality.

Synthetic Leather: Synthetic leather is less durable, stronger and lighter in weight then natural leather. It
does not stretch over time. Synthetic leather is identified by its consistent grain pattern and the sharp, clean
edge that is left where it has been cut.

Mesh: Mesh is lightweight and breathable. Nylon or polyester fibers are knit or woven into a variety of
patterns. The open structure of mesh has large or small holes that allow the free movement of air through the
material. Mesh is used predominately in running shoes for its excellent breathability.

About Brand

In 1927, during a decade of tremendous cultural shifts and progressive thinking, Brown Shoe launched a
women’s footwear line with the radical idea of combining current fashion with comfort features. Naturalizer
became one of the first shoe brands that women could turn to for feminine style they coveted and comfort
they thought was impossible to attain. The recent suffrage movement had provided women with new-found
freedoms and, as hemlines became shorter and shoes became the focus of fashion,

With rich leathers, soft suedes and unique details, Naturalizer footwear captures the essence of modern
femininity…whether that means taking a leisurely walk in velvet ballet flats, or running a board meeting in
black leather pumps.

PROMINENT SPORTS SHOE TYPES: Walking: Running : Cross Trainer

Walking Shoes: As you walk, the body's weight is distributed more evenly on the foot than when you run.
When walking, your weight rolls from the heel, through the ball and continues to the toe in one foot after the
other. This gentler, rocking-chair like motion requires your feet to absorb the shock of only 1-2x your body
weight with each step. And, during walking there are points where both feet are firmly on the ground, dividing
weight. Walking shoes are designed with the specific body mechanics and strike path of walking in mind. They
are constructed to be more flexible through the ball of the foot to allow a greater range of motion through the
roll of the forefoot. They also have greater arch support to protect where the force is heaviest on the foot.

Running Shoes :, on the other hand (or foot for that matter) requires the support of at least 2-3x your body
weight and each stride has moments with neither foot on the ground. With each step, the outer heel absorbs
most of the impact before distributing weight through the foot in an S motion through toe off.

Running shoes, have more cushioning in the heel–the point of impact–and less protection through the ball of
the foot. The amount of heat generated in the running motion is greater, so running shoes also are made with
a higher amount of mesh to keep feet cool during exercise.

Training Shoe are built-up more around the ankle to provide additional support for both forward and lateral
movement. These shoes are designed expressly for the gym enthusiast, with a seamless transition from
jogging on a treadmill, lifting weights or doing step aerobics. While not intended for long runs, the shoes will
support runs up to 5k in distance.

HUSH PUPPIES

HUSH PUPPIES
The Hush Puppies brand was founded in 1958 following extensive work by Wolverine to
develop a practical method of pigskin tanning for the US military. (Pigskin is considered one of
the most durable leathers and the government was interested in its use in gloves and other
protective materials for soldiers.) Chairman Victor Krause developed the concept of a "casual"
pigskin shoe to appeal to the then-growing post-war suburbia in the United States. The brand
became instantly recognizable as a leisure casual staple of late 1950s and 1960s American life.

Hush Puppies claimed their rubber soles saved the life of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards
when he accidentally touched his guitar against an ungrounded microphone at a 1965 concert
in Sacramento, California. Richards was knocked unconscious, but medics believed that the
crepe-soled Hush Puppies shoes he was wearing insulated him and saved his life.[2]

Hush Puppies uses a Basset Hound as its logo.

women and children. A division of Wolverine Worldwide. Hush Puppies is headquartered in

 What is double density or triple density soles?

Two different densities of PU/Rubber in one. Dual Density soles is the combining of two different
densities of the material (tough on the outside and soft and comfortable on the inside) to increase the
shoe's durability and shock absorption.

The bottom layer being for durability, This is moulded with minimal room for expansion, minimizes air
bubbles, and leaves a solid durable layer on the bottom.

The top layer is for shock absorption and uses the opposite principles. A small portion of raw material is
used and allowed to expand, leaving a soft, cushion-like layer on the top of each sole.

For eg:-The Dual Density PU soles mean extended life and greater comfort with an extremely lightweight
sole.

 What is hydrolysis? Why PU soles deforms if not used?

PU soles are moisture permeable. Moisture retention breaks the bond that
holds the molecules together leaving behind a crumbs of sticky mass.

All shoes with PU soles has to be regularly used so that the absorbed moisture
dries out quickly and regularly .Regular wearing puts pressure on the sole thus
squeezes out water/moisture .

and this delays the first signs of tiredness as the muscles are relieved. This relief is noticed
immediately in the central part of the sole of the foot giving a great sense of comfort and well
being.

 How some technology like memory cushion /Bounce Technology etc. works.
The material used in outsole/insole such as PU foam and Rubber would have features such as
Stability: Material’s resistance to change in shape and size
Elasticity: Material’s ability to bend and flex under the influence of a force and regain it’s size and
shape once the force is removed.

Foot Changes During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is often accompanied by changes in the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine and lower
extremities. This is often due to multiple factors including weight gain and hormonal changes that occur
during pregnancy. Changes that occur within feet can include the following.

What shoes to wear during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, women may note that the size of the feet will increase. This is due to an accumulation of
fluid and tissue within the lower extremities. The overall effect of this is an increase in volume. Hormonal
changes also occur that lead to looseness of the ligaments within the foot. These loosening results in increase
in foot length and width with a decrease in arch height, meaning the arch becomes flatter.

Pregnant women may notice their shoes feel tighter or that they can no longer fit into certain shoes. Bata
