For this project I intend to submit a UPA style, animated short. The film will include various digital sets, shape models
and a character model. I will experiment explore the UPA style as I prefer to work in 2D as opposed to 3D, however still
using the software Maya.
The simplicity of the flat cartoon look attracts me to this particular style of working. The repetition of its patterns and
geometry seems to provide an ordered way of presentation and this suits the world and environment in which I am
operating.
The simplicity of this design method needs to be translated into 3D software and due to way in which the model has been
created, ie; 2D, I have to create the illusion that this is in fact a character that can move around in a 3D space.
In the immediate, the King model within my design does need further development and the completion of the rigging and
skinning process. Once this is completed it will allow me to progress to the animation phase.
During this phase I will experiment with the different movement options that my main character has. To do this I will
research characters in South Park, Pugwash and Yogi Bear. As my environment also moves I will need to ensure that the
two elements, King and environment compliment each other.
In the timetable drafted, I have ensured that sufficient time is available for me to prepare animation and rendering.
My goal is to achieve a fully finished UPA style, animated short. The accompanying ‘Making of’ document will chart my
research activity, my progress and the processes used to create my film. A demo reel for my character will show the
movement and personality of my character. Personal progress will be documented on my blog.
My own reflective statement at the end of this project will contain my own self reflection of learning that has taken place
together with the challenges and opportunities that the process has provided.
