Ed Tech Issue

The issue in educational technology that I chose is using social media in

education. On social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn,

and Pinterest, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and

strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more (Social

Networking, 2018). Educators and parents alike have concerns that allowing students to

access social media networks in school can be dangerous and cause distraction. However,

with the technology driven world that is constantly changing and evolving it can be

beneficial for educators and students when proper use is taught and implemented.

According to Blair & Serafini (2014), “embracing technology and using social media

networks to leverage engagement these applications see can improve the delivery of

content and retention.”

The issue with integrating social media is the proper education and use of these

social networks, as well as the implementation that will enhance and engage students in

learning academic content through interactions and resources available. Proponents of

social networking sites say that the online communities promote increased interaction

with friends and family; offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to

educational support and materials; facilitate social and political change; and disseminate

useful information rapidly (Social Networking, 2018). In order for educators to properly

integrate and implement social networks to enhance student learning, they must improve

their knowledge and remain as technology-savvy as the students being served. Opponents

of social networking say that the sites prevent face-to-face communication; waste time on

frivolous activity; alter children’s brains and behavior making them more prone to

ADHD; expose users to predators like pedophiles and burglars; and spread false and

potentially dangerous information (Social Networking, 2018). The concerns of opponents

are real and can become an issue if the educators implementing the use social networks

are not properly educated, and there are no security measures planned and implemented.
