INTRODUCTION

Any step taken by an organization to train and retrain

Workshops are product of history and the knowledge
gotten from it will go a long way in contributing to the
growth and development of any organization. We are
all expected to be actively involve in this workshop so

 OBJECTIVE

By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to


understand the concept of time management, importance of
time management, purpose of time management, effective
time management techniques in the classroom and how
effective time management can be apply in the classroom.

 What is Time Management?

Before we define the concept of time management, it is important for us as


teachers to understand that everything we are expected to do or are doing within
the school environment is time bound. That means, if time is not appropriately
allocated to different tasks and judiciously utilize conflict may arise that stifles the
realizations of set out objectives and goal. Time management” is the process of
organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good
time management enables you to work smarter not harder so that you get more
done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Time
management requires an important shift in focus from activities to results: being
busy isn’t the same as being effective. (Ironically, the opposite is often closer to the
truth)

 What is Time Management?

Time management means organizing our time efficiently. It refers to the ability to
use our time well. If we have good time management skills, we will be able to
complete all of our work on time, and to avoid wasting time when we could be
using it for something worthwhile. Time management refers to the practice of
apportioning our time so that we get all of our tasks done. It is the process of
thinking about what we need to achieve, and how much time we have to achieve it
Time management means scheduling an appropriate number of tasks at
appropriate times, and leaving ourselves with enough time to complete those
tasks to a high standard. Time management involves, therefore, spending the right
amount of time on the right things. It is something we can do over relatively long
or relatively short periods of time.

 What is Time Management?

Good time management is not just about getting all of our work done. If we are
good at managing our time, we can make sure that we use our leisure time as well
as possible too. It also means leaving ourselves enough time to relax and to spend
time with our loved ones. Time management is a skill we should all develop.
Whether you want to turn up on time for all of your appointments in the future, or
whether you want to be able to learn a new skill alongside your work schedule,
there is no denying the fact that time management is a very useful skill for people
in all walks of life.

 Importance of Time Management

Time management is very important if we want to get the most out of life, and this
workshop provides you with key and compelling reasons for the importance of
time management.
1. Fulfilling our goals: we cannot fulfill our dreams if we do not make time to do so.
Good time management enables us to ensure that we have enough time to carry
out all of our projects to perfection – if necessary by dividing them into sub
projects which each have their own timescale for completion.

2. Relaxing: if we manage our time well, we will have plenty of time to relax. By
contrast, a poorly managed schedule is a recipe for stress and unhappiness as all
of those jobs pile up around us and we do not seem to have enough time to get
them all done.

3. Making time for others: time management is not just about us and our goals – it
is also about using our time to connect with those that we love. You do not need to
buy a person an expensive gift in order to demonstrate to them that you love and
care for them: often, simply making time for that person can be a much more
meaningful way of doing so.
4. Remembering that our time here is finite: do not reach the end of your life
burdened with regrets about things that you wish you had done, or people that
you wish you had spent more time with. Good time management will enable you to
use your one, finite life on this planet to the fullest of the full.

 Importance of Time Management

5. Remembering that we should not be trapped by time: someone who is good at


managing their time is also aware that there is more to life than time
management. Spending just a minute with someone that we truly love can feel
more worthwhile than spending an hour working or idling. This goes to show that,
though time management is important, often it is the experiences that we have
that are most important in our lives and the emotions that we feel ourselves and
provoke in others as well as the good that we do on this earth, rather than the
amount of time we have.

 What is the main purpose of time management?

There are many ways that time management can help us in our lives. The main
reason behind developing time management skills are as follows:
1. Saving money: using time efficiently makes our work more profitable. As the
saying goes, ‘time is money’, and in many contexts this is very literally true.
2. Meeting deadlines: time management is an essential skill if we want to meet our
deadlines.
3. Achieving our goals: we can only achieve our goals if we have enough time to
take all of the necessary steps towards them.
4. Enjoying our leisure time: when we manage our time well, we find that we have
plenty of time left over to relax in.
5. Courtesy: it is courteous not to keep other people waiting whilst we try and
finish other tasks.

 Effective time management techniques in the classroom


It is easy to manage time effectively in the classroom when you use these techniques below.
1. Be realistic about what you want to achieve and how much time you have to do it in. Time
management plans should always be achievable, and we should always be able to carry them
out without having to cause ourselves undue amounts of stress or sleeplessness. Rather, we
should feel less stressed, and sleep better, because we are managing our time so well.

2. Make a plan: use a diary or calendar to manage your time. Have a clear idea about what you
should be doing at any given time in the classroom.

3. Prioritize: what activities are your priorities when teaching in the class? Spending more
time introducing the lesson, Or, perhaps spending more time in teaching and explaining the
lesson? Or spending more time assessing the pupils/students? Knowing what your priorities
are will help you to see where you need to apportion most of your time in the classroom.

4. Take stock regularly: pause at regular intervals to check that you are on track,
and if you are not, be prepared to make some adjustments to your style of
teaching.

5. Do not waste time: think about all the activities that you do that waste your time
(such as always pressing your phone, discussing with colleagues during working
hours, etc) and try and cut down on them.

6. Remind yourself of the value of time. As teachers we only have a fixed amount of
time to teach the students and cover the syllabus, once we have used up some of
our time wrongly, we cannot get it back. Staying constantly aware of this is a
brilliant way to motivate yourself to use your time well.

Five efficient time management tips teachers can use in the classroom.

1. Organize the day by priorities


Teacher time management must start with setting priorities and organizing the day around
the most important tasks. Setting priorities can help keep teachers on track throughout the
day, even when the unexpected occurs and the workload can seem overwhelming.
Effective prioritizing is about arranging workload based on both the importance of the tasks
as well as the resulting impact of the completed tasks. Teachers must be able to assess
whether projects can be put on hold if the outcomes are not as impactful as others.
Priorities are not as black and white as “putting math and English first and getting to arts
projects if time avails.” This kind of thinking can lead to class burnout–for both teachers and
students. Within certain contexts, an impactful art or outdoor activity can be just as
stimulating as academic lesson plans.

2. Strategically plan homework assignments
Both teachers and students may find that assignments that require repetitive practice is
better suited for the home environment. Although in-class practice helps when framing and
structuring problems, repetitive practice during class may not be the best use of time.
Assignments that simply ask students to complete a set number of problems for practice
unnecessarily consume valuable class time.

3. Avoid “loaded” procrastination


Pinell (1992) stated that teachers find it more efficient to break up grading materials into
small groups that are graded each day than to work on grading the work of the entire class on
the same day. Teachers should avoid piling on loads of grading assignments, and try to knock
out batches at a time. A small pile each day is easier to manage and allows a teacher to
properly evaluate the assignment and offer feedback to students. Teachers can experience a
sense of accomplishment from each completed batch.

4. Plan for potential crises


It is better to plan ahead for potential problems before facing them in the
classroom, as urgent crises can distract teachers from their goals within the
classroom. Although some problems have limited options, such as natural
disasters, teachers can plan around the needs of students. A crisis that relates to
student behavior is better to avoid or handle before it reaches the peak to avoid
wasting class time. By learning about students before they enter the classroom,
teachers can create a plan of action to avoid triggers and stop distractions early.

5. Set aside personal time
A teacher has many tasks that require attention and often focuses on the needs of students
and their parents. Although it is tempting to put more time into grading, feedback and
managing student needs, it is also important to set aside personal time to keep the priorities
in proper perspective.
Prioritizing time for personal needs is necessary to effectively implement and execute the
plans for educating students. When teachers are exhausted due to lack of personal care and
time, it is possible that the classroom becomes less effective and efficient. Implementing time-
saving plans only works when a teacher is energetic, healthy and refreshed.
Teachers need to take measures to properly manage time for an effective classroom
environment. By working through teacher time management strategies, it is possible to keep
up with the educational needs of every student, manage urgent situations immediately and
avoid falling behind when unexpected events occur. Time management is an important part of
providing quality education and meeting the needs of every student.

A final point about classroom time management. ..


1. Explain to the students exactly what the intended learning intentions of the
lesson are;
2. Have smooth transitions;
3. Use countdown reminders e.g. 'You have 3 minutes left', 'You now have 1 minute
left' - make sure students can see the clock in your classroom;
4. Be sure instructional materials are ready;
5. Present instructions visually, through the use of instructional resources
6. Check for understanding, to be sure the pupils/students are understanding
your lesson.
7. Choose most effective type of teaching;
8. Create a competitive atmosphere that helps to keep the pace brisk
