NOVEMBER 2018
INTRODUCTION

Seed germination is the process of development of a seed

that requires a good condition to grow. In this study, mung bean
will be used to germinate using different types of water which
is the tap water, and saltwater. Saltwater is the dominant
source of water and tap water is accessible to have in the
house. Those different varieties will determine which water can
grow mung beans in a week.

Experiment Goals

This experiment research aims:

To determine which type of water is sufficient to use in

growing mung bean so that it can help farmers and benefactors in
germination.

Materials
● Type of water mixture:
Salt water
Tap water
Regular water
● 135 bean seeds
● paper towel
● Measuring cup
● 9 container
● Paper tape and permanent marker

Procedure
● Gather all materials and tools needed:
● Get the container where the bean seeds will germinate. Get
your pen and paper tape and label each of them: Controlled
(regular water with trial no.), Experiment 1 (salt water
with trial no.), Experiment 2 (tap water with trial no.).
● Use measuring cup to measure the salt water and regular
water in 30 ml. For set up, 3 trials of each set up. Then
pour water in each container.
● Put the paper towel in each container and it should be
fitted.
● Put 15 seeds of beans then close the container.
● Observe the experiment.
● Gather the data of each set up using this table below

Relevance of the Study

Different liquid affect the rate of germination by Bridger

Zoske of Planting Science Organization, the existing study of
germination of mung bean and wheat seeds using a tap water,
salt water, and smart water. The information of existing study
help our research study in conducting experiment. Also to know
what varieties can use to seed germination. Our seed germination
is use a different methods in conducting experiment and
procedures. The germination will identify the process of plants
because of method used.

Significance

This study can help growers, farmers and community to

determine what varieties of water can help them by seed
germination. Specially, the community who live in the seashore
and has a pump water. So that they will know that there
available water in place can use to grow plants. Germination can
help benefactors to grow their plants faster and develop
quickly. Also community can use this methods of germination to
plants vegetables, fruits or flowers in their places.

Experiment question

● Which type of water (salt water or tap water) can grow

the beans in 7 days?
● What will be the effect of salt water and tap water
characteristics in the beans?within three weeks?
● What contents of the result of water that help to grow
beans?
● Does every set up have the same appearance of paper
towel? Could these affect on the conducted experiment?
● Do setups have a different appearance of roots?

Hypothesis
● The type of mixture that can grow beans faster is salt
water because mung beans have a salt tolerance that
plants need sodium chlorine in plants.
● Salt water has a content of sodium chlorine that
causes of decreasing leaf area and stomatal opening
because of high salinity.
● The content of tap water that helps mung bean grow is
the nutrients contains water which is chlorine. The
plants absorb nutrient that micronutrients contribute.
● Yes, each set up has the same appearance of paper
towel because the purpose of paper towel is to absorb
water to the seeds.
● Yes, tap water has a lot of roots than the other setup
because the nutrient that tap water has help plants to
grow.

Scientific Background

According to Promix, Sodium is not an essential element for

plants but can be used in small quantities. It is to aid in
metabolism and synthesis of chlorophyll. In some plants, it can
be used as a partial replacement for potassium and aids in the
opening and closing of stomata, which helps regulate internal
water balance. Also, Chloride is needed in small quantities and
aids in plant metabolism, photosynthesis, osmosis (movement of
water in and out of plant cells) and ionic balance within the
cell.

The six most abundant ions of seawater are chloride,

sodium, sulfate, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Also, it
contains various dissolved atmospheric gases, chiefly nitrogen,
oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide. Plants need a small amount of
salinity to survive, since salt is one of the nutrients
necessary for plants to grow, so the presence of some salt is
necessary according to Britannica.

According to Test Assured and water testing kits, Tap water

is the most readily available water for plant. S ome of chemical
and mineral contents such as fluoride, salts, and chlorine which
are added for human benefit are not healthy for plants. It may
contain excess minerals and heavy metals that could impact plant
life. While some plants can thrive despite these additives and
impurities, they are not conducive to strong growth. Tap water
can also have Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, and
Phosphorus. However, some tap water also contains bacteria and
pesticides that cause inhibited growth of plants according to
Prestige water.

The most common issue regarding tap water is chlorine. Many

farmers don’t realize that chlorine is a micronutrient required
by plants. The quantity they need is extremely minimal. Because
plants can absorb this micronutrient, they take in far too much
from unfiltered tap water. The result is diminished growth.

According to Bonnie Plants, roots provide the needed of

plants and keep in place. More importantly, roots are the
lifeline of a plant, taking up air, water and nutrients. They
also interact with sunlight to produce sugars, flavors, and
energy for the plants. Some biologist recently discovered that
roots secrete compounds that affect the microorganism, where
they helping to protect plants from disease and encouraging to
absorb more nutrients.

The line graph shows the domain result of the height of
mung beans in two weeks. Generally, both tap and regular water
have a good process of growth. Though there’s a different
characteristics result. While the salt water did not grow,
unlike others.

Conclusion

● Our hypothesis is rejected. Based on the result, Mung bean

didn't grow and it results of strong odor, and have a
molds. Therefore, Saltwater can't use to grow mung beans
because of high tolerance of sodium chlorine that they
can't take it and it become poisonous to them. Also, mung
beans can grow in saltwater. However, mung beans only can
take a low salt tolerance because we also conducted another
set up that we mixed the 15 ml of salt water and regular
water. After a week, they grow. Thought, there growth is
only the radicle grow. So that mung bean has a salt
tolerance but not as high as sodium chlorine in seawater.

● Our hypothesis is rejected. Salt water didn't grow. The

Sodium Chlorine that can't take mung beans because mung
bean has a low tolerance of salt. Based on the experiment
process, the seeds grow molds and strong odor.

● Our hypothesis is accepted. The process of germination of

seed in set up of tap water are good. Plants grow tall and
green leaves. Also the result of our experiment, after 2
days they started to grow and have a good appearance after
a week. The calcium and chlorine that tap water contains
and absorbs nutrients that plants needs to grow specially
the micronutrients.

● Our hypothesis is accepted. The result of conducted

experiment, paper towel of each set up has the same
appearance. In the germination, the paper towel always
moist and roots absorbs water in paper towel. The purpose
of paper towel is to control absorption of water to plants.
In first week, Tap water, saltwater and controlled has a
moist appearance of water and doesn't have a odor and
color. Then the next week, the appearance of both set up
still the same but the odor of salt water become strong
because of too much sodium chlorine. Also, the third week
has already odor and stain because they become dried and
molds. Therefore, the first grow of plant has the same
appearance of paper towel but different odor and it didn't
affect growth of plants.

● Our hypothesis is accepted. Based on the result, both tap

water and regular have a lot of roots. However, the roots
of tap water is longer root branches than regular.
According to the background research, when the roots system
is healthy and bigger. The plants also healthy and well
grow because they will absorb a lot of water and protect
plants to disease.

Therefore, Tap water can use to grow mung beans faster in

germinating. In just second day of experiment, it will grow than
others and after a hours the controlled. The benefactors and
farmers can use tap water as a water sources because it result a
well grow process of germination.
Recommendations

To Future Researcher

● Biologist researcher recommend, using a salt water as an

experimental factors can use to grow mung bean. However,
mung beans has a low tolerance of sodium chlorine which is
the salt water. Mung bean only can take small amount of
sodium chlorine. So researchers use a small amount of salt
water and mix in other varieties of water
● Researcher use salt water and tap water as a independent
variable. You can also use rain water, lake water and
others that can possible sources of people in germinating
plants.
● Plants need more nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus,
potassium, magnesium, calcium and sulfur. So researcher
recommend, a water that has a nutrient is more effective to
have a good appearance of plants and health growth. Also
plants need micronutrients like chlorine that tap water
has.
● In germination, researcher use a paper towel method. You
can also use filter paper, other hard tissue paper, and
newspaper as an absorption of plants.

For the benefactors and users

● Based on the researcher's experimental result, salt water

can't use in germination because seeds didn't grow.
Therefore, tap water is more convenient to use and also
it's accessible in farmers.
● In germination, seeds has a good rate of growth in just one
week. Because the more they grow bigger, the more they need
nutrients and sunlight. Therefore, in just a week of
process germination. Plants should transfer in soil or pot.
