Scope

Thisdatasheetappliesforhot-andcold-rolledsheetandstrip,semi-finishedproducts,bars,wirerod
andprofiles,aswellasforseamlessandweldedtubes/pipesforpressurizedapplications.


Application

Buildingcladding,doors,windowsandfittings;offshoremodules;tanksandtubes/pipesforchemical
tankers;storageandoverlandtransportationofchemicals,foodandbeverages;pharmaceutical,
syntheticfiber,paperandtextileproductionequipment;pressurevessels.
TheTicontentensuresresistancetointergranular corrosionevenintheweldedcondition.

Solutionannealingcanbeeliminatedwheretheconditionsforhotformingandsubsequentcoolingare
suchthatthemechanicalpropertiesoftheproductareretained.

Iftheheattreatmentisperformedinacontinuousfurnace,theupperendofthegiventemperature
rangeorevenaboveitisgenerallypreferred.

Forheattreatmentwithintheframeworkoffurtherprocessing,thelowerendofthetemperaturerange
givenforsolutionannealingshouldbetargetedasthemechanicalpropertiesmayotherwisebe
impaired.Intheeventthatthetemperaturedidnotfallbelowthelowerthresholdofthesolution
annealingtemperaturerangeduringhotforming,aminimumtemperaturethresholdof1,000°Cis
sufficientforrepeatedannealing.

Corrosionstressmustbetakenintoaccountwhenselectingtheweldingfillermaterial.Thecast
structureoftheweldmetalmaynecessitateuseofahigher-alloyfiller.

Preheatingisnotnecessaryforthissteel.Heattreatmentafterweldingisnotcustomary.

Austeniticsteelshaveonly30%ofthethermalconductivityofunalloyedsteels.Theirmeltingpointis
lowerthanthatofunalloyedsteels,soausteniticsteelsmustbeweldedwithlowerheatinputthan
unalloyedsteels.Inordertoavoidoverheatingorburn-throughofthinnersheet,highweldspeeds
mustbeused.Copperbackingisexpedientforquickerheatdissipationalthough,inordertoavoid
solderembrittlement,itmustnotbeallowedtofusewiththematerial.

Thissteelhasasignificantlyhigherthermalexpansioncoefficientthanunalloyedsteel.Inconjunction
withthepoorerthermalconductivity,greaterdistortionmustbeexpected.

Allmeasureswhichcounterdistortion(e.g.back-stepwelding,switchingsideswhenweldingdouble-V
welds,useoftwoweldersforlargercomponents)mustbetakenintoparticularaccountwhenwelding
TK1.4571.Forproductthicknessesover12mm,adouble-VweldshouldbeusedratherthanaV-

weld.Theincludedangleshouldbe60–70°,althoughapprox.50°issufficientforMIGwelding.
Excessiveweldsshouldbeavoided.Tackweldsshouldbemaderelativelyclosetogether(significantly
closerthanforunalloyedsteels)topreventseveredeformation,shrinkageorwelddetachment.The
tackweldsshouldsubsequentlybegroundoratleastthecratercrackseliminated.

TK1.4571issusceptibletohotcrackingwhenusedincombinationwithausteniticweldingmaterial
andexcessiveheatinput.Thesusceptibilitytohotcrackingcanbelimitedbyusingaweldingmaterial
withalowferritecontent(deltaferrite).Ferritecontentsupto10%arebeneficialanddonotusually
impaircorrosionresistance.Theweldlayersmustbeasthinaspossible(stringerbeadtechnique),as
highcoolingspeedsreducesusceptibilitytohotcracking.

Whenweldingthissteel,itshouldalsobecooledasquicklyaspossibletoavoidsusceptibilityto
embrittlement.

TK1.4571isverywell-suitedforlaser beam welding(levelAsuitabilityforweldingaccordingtothe
GermanAssociationforWeldingandRelatedProcesses(DVS)Guideline3203,part3).Theuseofweld
fillermaterialsisunnecessarywheretheweldinggrooveislessthan0.3mmwide/theproductisless
than0.1mmthick.Fillermaterialsofthesametypecanbeusedforlargergroovewidths.Ifoxidation
oftheweldsurfaceduringlaserbeamweldingispreventedthroughtheuseofasuitabletrailing
shield,e.g.heliumasashieldgas,theweldisascorrosionresistantasthesubstrate.Thereisnorisk
ofhotcrackingintheweldprovidedtheprocessisproperlycontrolled.

TK1.4571isalsowell-suitedforlaser beam fusion cuttingusingnitrogenorflamecuttingusing
oxygen.Thecutedgeshaveonlyverysmallheat-affectedzonesandaregenerallyfreeofmicro-
cracks,whichmeanstheyarereadilyformable.Providedtheprocessisproperlycontrolled,thefusion
cutedgesonTK1.4571aresuitableforimmediatefurtherprocessingandinparticularcanbewelded
withoutanyfurtherpreparation.

Onlyrust-resistantequipmentsuchassteelbrushes,chippinghammers,etc.maybeusedin
processingtoensurethatthepassivationisnotcompromised.

Pleaserefrainfrommarkingtheweldareawithmarkerpenscontainingoilsortemperatureindicating
chalk.

Thehighcorrosionresistanceofthisstainlesssteelisprovidedbytheformationofahomogeneous,
densepassivationlayeronthesurface.Heattints,scale,slagresidues,trampiron,weldspatterand
similarmustberemovedsotheydonotdamagethepassivationlayer.

Brushing,grinding,picklingorsandblasting(iron-freequartzsandorglassbeads)processescanbe
usedtocleanthesurface.Onlystainlesssteelbrushesmaybeusedinbrushing.Immersionandspray
picklingprocessesshouldbeusedwhenpicklingpreviouslybrushedweldareas,althoughpickling
pastesorsolutionsareoftenused.Afterpickling,thesurfaceshouldbecarefullycleanedwithwater.


Remarks

Thematerialmaybeslightlymagnetizableinthequenchedcondition.Magnetizabilityincreaseswith
greatercoldforming.
