The Id
Personality provides great insight into people and their lives. Personality
traits affect every person in the world. Every human being has complex
personality, according to Sigismund Freud’s idea, the psyche has more one aspect
namely the id, ego and the superego. Let’s talk about the first aspect the id, the id
is the most basic part of the personality, this aspect is driven by the principle
theory in which the wants and desires needs an immediate fulfillment. If the
wants, are not gratified or not met, a person become anxious or tense. The id is
the only component of personality that is present from birth, this aspect is
unconscious and includes the instinctive and primitive behavior.
The id remains infantile in its function throughout a person’s life and does
not change with time or experience, as it is not in touch with the external world.
The id is not affected by reality, logic or the everyday world, as it operates within
the unconscious part of the mind. An example of this is the infant’s personality,
in which if the infant is hungry or sleepy, he or she will cry out until the demand
of the id is gratified. Thus the infant’s personality has been entirely ruled by id.
Another scenario that depicts id is in the Harry Potter series, where Harry’s best
friend is Ron Weasley. He constantly urges Harry to play games, be lazy, and
look at girls. He has little control over his emotions and reacts almost instinctively
to everything. Another example of this aspect is the drama series in Abs-Cbn
Halik in which Jade ( the mistress) embodies the Id, where she has an affair with
a rich guy. She wanted a fortunate life abundant with money and expensive
things, even she has a husband she still chose to have a relationship with the guy
without thinking consequences thus selfishness has been depicted. If we were
ruled entirely by the pleasure principle, we might find ourselves grabbing the
things that we want out of other people's hands to satisfy our own cravings.
However immediately fulfilling these needs is not always realistic or even
possible . The id engages in primary process thinking, which is primitive,
illogical, irrational, and fantasy oriented. This form of process thinking has no
comprehension of objective reality, and is selfish and wishful in nature.
The Ego

When we talk about the second aspect of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of

psyche which is the ego, in which it seeks to please the id's drive in realistic ways
that will benefit in the long term rather than bring grief. Ideally, the ego works
by reason, whereas the id is chaotic and unreasonable. This aspect is driven by
the reality principle that enables the person to delay their needs and desires or
simply saying it does not have to be instantly fulfilled, this aspect comprises the
decision making component of the human being. Thus this aspect recognizes that
other people has their own needs and wants too.
The ego is the organized part of the personality structure that includes
defensive, perceptual, intellectual-cognitive, and executive functions. The ego
separates out what is real. It helps us to organize our thoughts and make sense of
them and the world around us, additionally conscious awareness resides with this
aspect. According to my research Freud used the word ego to mean a sense of
self, but later revised it to mean a set of psychic functions such as judgment,
tolerance, reality testing, control, planning, defense, synthesis of information,
intellectual functioning, and memory. One example of this aspect is leading role
of drama series Halik in Abs-Cbn , Jericho Rosales. He embodies ego in which
his actions also the way he behaves is not being reckless and selfish. He acted
based on what is good for everyone, he did not do anything for revenge or did
bad things to get his wife back. He handled the situation with an organize thoughts
and decisions, planning to go on in his life even without his wife though it hurts
him thus being rational has been depicted in the character.
The Superego

According to Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, the third aspect is the

superego in which it develops when a person has morals to understand things. It
is taught by parents applying their guidance and influence. The superego’s task
is to rule over the Id’s impulses, like stealing or doing inappropriate things in
which society forbids. The superego and the ego might have similarities but they
vary in their reasons and decision in which superego’s decisions are more based
on the morals in which it gives us guidelines in making judgements and makes us
think and act ethically.
The superego is divided into two components the first one is the Ego Ideal
provides rules for good behavior , and standards of excellence towards which the
Ego must strive. Take for example a child who is aiming to be a good role model
for his/her younger siblings. The child follows all the rules of their parents and
doing good deeds and as the child fulfilled those desires he/she feels proud of
thyself. The last component of the Superego is The Conscience it rules about
what constitutes bad behavior. The Conscience is basically all those things that
are inappropriate and not acceptable by the society or thy parent’s disapprove or
a punishable act. Take as an example yourself, as a student your duty is to study
hard and have good grades, but you’re lazy enough to drag yourself on your study
table to study , consequently you thought of your parent’s sacrifices just to send
you to school and you felt guilty about it, thus you decided to study your lessons
instead of doing other stuff that are irrelevant. The superego acts to perfect and
civilize our behavior. It works to suppress all unacceptable urges of the id and
struggles to make the ego act upon idealistic standards rather that upon realistic
principles. The superego is present in the conscious, preconscious, and
unconscious.
