Montcalm Agriculture:
Diverse and Growing
Twenty two percent of the state’s workforce is in the agri-food and agri-energy
industry, which is more than 900,000 jobs. There are 24,795 farm operators in
Michigan whose primary job is farming, and an additional 52,719 who work part
time on farms, while maintaining off farm jobs.
Michigan produces over 200 commodities on a commercial basis, making the state
second only to California in agricultural diversity. One third of Michigan’s field crop
production is exported, and the total value of agriculture exports is $1.75 billion.
Our top three export destinations are Canada, Mexico, and Japan.
Montcalm County contains 713 square miles with 237,252 acres in farms. There
are 1,127 farms in the county, and our average size of farm is 211 acres. We have
612 operators whose primary occupation is farming.
Principal crops include corn, potatoes, dry beans, wheat, soybeans, alfalfa,
processing vegetables, and Christmas trees. Our principal livestock enterprise
is dairy. We rank high in colonies of bees, pullets and laying hens. We rank
number one in the state in potato and vegetable production and number three in
Christmas tree production.
The county is blessed with deep, sandy loam and loamy sand soils, which are
moderately well-to-well drained on gently sloping topography which are suitable
for irrigated agriculture. The county is the second largest irrigated area in the state
with more than 50,000 acres under irrigation. Water resources are excellent, with
most irrigation water coming from wells.
Montcalm farms have a long history of diversity and involvement with specialty
crops and have also been very progressive and innovative in their production
and marketing of crops, such as potatoes, dry beans, processing vegetables and
Christmas trees. The county also has several Amish communities with their farms
and businesses.
So if you feel you have seen some unique agriculture in your travels around our
nation, you likely will find something very similar close by in Montcalm County
as you explore our highways and by-ways. You will find farm markets, bakeries,
cheese producers, pick your own produce, and agri-tourism businesses. We invite
you to go and explore close to home.

Take a Walk
on the
Wild Side
Adventures abound at the
Comden-Towle Model Forest
Montcalm County is blessed with numerous parks whose open spaces provide ample
opportunity for playing catch, flying kites, or having a picnic in the sun. For those of
you who seek a more natural and serene setting, look no further than the Comden-
Towle Model Forest. Donated to the Montcalm Conservation District in 1968, this 67 acre
parcel provides a quiet place to reflect and commune with nature.
The best way to enjoy the forest is by traveling its many hiking trails, which take you across swamps, around ponds
and grasslands, and upwards to the highest point in Montcalm County. High point trail offers inspiring views of the
surrounding forest landscape and is a must-see opportunity for any county resident. The diverse forest of upland
oak, hardwoods, lowlands, and pines provide habitat for a plethora of forest critters; deer, wood duck, raccoons, frogs,
turtles, and woodpeckers to name a few. If you come with a group, feel free to use our pavilion area to throw a picnic
or roast some hotdogs over the campfire. From wildflower viewing in the spring to cross-country skiing in the winter,
there is never a shortage of activities at the Comden-Towle.
The model forest is open from dawn until dusk and can be accessed by
heading south on Hillman Rd, 1.5 miles west of Entrican. Stop by and
bring a book to read, or a pair of binoculars to spot some wildlife. Your
adventure is waiting.

Sheridan
By Susan Wyckoff McFarland, President
Driving in from the south, one passes Pearl Lake and enters the
quaint downtown business district. Main Street features newly
resurfaced streets, sidewalks and streetlights as well as a beautiful
clock on the corner of Main Street and Washington Street. The
clock was purchased by donations made by the Community.
Updated housing surrounds Main Street and an elementary school
serving the Central Montcalm Public School district is just to the
east. While going through the village does not take long, slowing
down to check out what is offered or meeting some of its residents
is definitely worth it.
Sheridan, population 650, is near the center of the state and is equidistant from the large cities of Lansing, Grand
Rapids, Mount Pleasant and Big Rapids. We have a variety of downtown businesses including a grocery store, dollar
store, restaurant, barber shops, VFW, community center, salons, auto parts store, funeral home, bowling alley, ice
cream shop, hardware store, chiropractic office, hospital, medical offices, plastics factory, lumber yard, churches, fire
station and smokehouse for training and education, bar post office, bank, automotive/Whizzer dealer and the Sheridan
Village Office. The village of Sheridan is a member of the Heart of Montcalm Chamber of Commerce.
Education is important to village residents. Sheridan school-age residents attend Central Montcalm Public School. Post-
secondary opportunities exist nearby. Montcalm Community College is five miles away, offering two-year degrees,
enrichments courses and fitness opportunities including a pool and rock-climbing wall.
Sheridan and its surroundings offer more than most small communities because of our numerous lakes, snowmobile
trails and golf courses. Sheridan is graced by Pearl Lake and its public beach that has recently been updated with a
new pavilion, barbecue grills, picnic tables, handicap accessible fishing dock and a new playground for three different
age groups.
Come join us in the village. One exciting weekend to explore is Sheridan Springfest, celebrated annually on Memorial
Day weekend featuring parades, amusement rides, family activities and more!

Economic Development
in Montcalm County
Businesses use geographic, demographic, and economic data sets to find new locations
for their businesses. Through these lenses, let’s just say that Montcalm County has
a nice personality. Why? Geographically, most of Montcalm County is near nothing.
This not only increases transportation costs, but also increases time to customer.
Economically, Montcalm County has lower income per capita and higher unemployment
rates than the State of Michigan. Demographically, educational attainment in the
county trails Michigan for bachelor’s degrees and higher, and Michigan trails most of
the rest of the country. Unfortunately, this is not getting better because our best and
brightest young people are moving away to seek employment. So, on paper, Montcalm
County is not a place most businesses would give a second look.
So, we were faced with two choices. Choice one was to keep doing what we were doing and hoping businesses would
choose us. Choice two was a more aggressive economic development model, where we helped businesses discover why
they should locate here. Obviously, choice two was the way to go, but how could we do this given limited resources,
and limited experience with true economic development?
Part of the answer was simple, we contract with The Right Place, an economic development organization that has time
and time again proven their expertise. The other part was not so simple; how do we pay for it? There were many
ideas, but in the end it took Bill Braman, a local philanthropist, to step up and get the ball rolling.
In early 2014, Mr. Braman gave $50,000 per year for three years to bring in a representative from The Right Place
to represent Greenville. $25,000 each year was a gift, the other $25,000 was a loan that the city and chamber of
commerce were to raise money and pay back. The ball was now rolling.
Countywide efforts to partner with The Right Place had stalled until Mr. Braman’s actions. Mr. Braman eventually
decided to donate the entire $50,000 per year for three years, which left the Montcalm Economic Alliance having to
raise $75,000 per year for three years.
9
For good companies who want their
employees to live in a good place,
Montcalm County can’t be beat.
What happened next could only be described as amazing. Cities, townships, businesses, nonprofit organizations, schools,
foundations, and individuals came together to support the effort. Within three months the Alliance raised a great deal
more than it needed to, and the countywide effort to partner with The Right Place was realized.
The question remains, if Montcalm County looks so bad on paper, how will partnering with The Right Place help? Let’s
just say, we do have a good personality, and many other great things that may go unnoticed. For good companies
who want their employees to live in a good place, Montcalm County can’t be beat. In Montcalm County you can
throw a rock in any direction and hit a lake. In Montcalm County we have beautiful parks, nature trails, and bike trails.
In Montcalm County we have great schools, and a great Community College to help train the workforce of the future.
It’s true that in Montcalm County we aren’t that close to anything, but we aren’t that far either. Montcalm County is
a great place to eat, shop, and play, but for those who want more excitement, we are within an hour of both Lansing
and Grand Rapids. While maps and data sets point out some negative things, The Right Place has the resources and
the connections to show that Montcalm County isn’t just a choice; it’s the best choice.
What does the future hold for Montcalm County? We won’t be Grand Rapids, and we won’t be Lansing, because
we don’t want to be. Working with The Right Place, we are looking to attract small, medium, and large businesses
that aren’t just looking for tax breaks, but instead are looking to be part of the community. We are working to attract
businesses that care for their employees, and want them to be able to live in, and be part of a great community. We
are looking to attract businesses that aren’t concerned with low wages, but instead invest in their employees and grow
from within.
This won’t happen overnight, but it has already started. The Right Place played an integral part in attracting Dicastal
to Greenville. Dicastal is the largest foundry company in China. Greenville was not even on their radar, but The Right
Place was able to show them why it was the right place to move. Why is Dicastal right for Montcalm County?
Because they pay competitive wages, invest in their employees, and want to be part of this community.
To sum it up, the future is bright for Montcalm County. Our partnership with The Right Place will prove to be very
beneficial. More good companies, more good jobs, and more good people will make Montcalm County an even better
place to live, and a place people want to move to, instead of from.

Sidney by Esther Peterson
The biggest asset that sits in the middle of town is the very modern Sidney State Bank, which was the only bank
around that was able to stay open during the Great Depression. There is a lovely little park just north of town that
has two picnic pavilions with playground equipment for young folks. The baseball field that was started in the 1950s
continues to have Sunday ball games by several local teams.
While in Sidney, you might want to stop for refreshments at our local bar or general store. Moncalm Community
College is located to the east of Sidney and offers more than three miles of maintained hiking and cross country skiing
trails and spans more than 100 acres on the college campus and the Stanton Game Area. If you’re into physical
activity, the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail goes through Sidney. You can walk or bike into Greenville to the south and as
far as Alma to the north. The trails are all blacktopped, providing you with miles of scenic views of the country.
Near the college is Heritage Village, which was started in 1987. It has grown to include 26 historical buildings and
hundreds of artifacts from local areas. The first weekend in August is the annual Heritage Village Festival, which
includes a one-room schoolhouse re-enactment, a working blacksmith, vintage baseball games, quilt show, campsite for
early settlers, antique farm equipment and much more. Food can be purchased so you’ll need to plan a day with your
family to take in all the activities.
Another feature of Sidney includes beautiful lakes for swimming, boating and fishing. Just north of Sidney on Derby
Road is Derby Lake and Nevins Lake, which are across the road from each other.

Crystal
“A Crystal in the Palm,” it’s just a small town yet draws people
from all over Michigan. To residents, its home, to others, it’s a place
where memories are made and shared for future generations.
Crystal is centrally located one hour Northeast of Grand Rapids
and one hour Northwest of Lansing. It is home to Crystal Lake,
the largest sports lake in Montcalm County. It boasts 742 acres
with depths down to 80 feet and is a spring fed, sand bottom
lake enjoyed by many. The downtown area is a self-sufficient little
village with a bank, Laundromat, grocery store, hardware store
and other small businesses. For entertainment, there is a small
theatre, roller-skating rink and weekly races at the racetrack during
the summer months.
The Crystal Township Park hosts many picnics during the summer months. It overlooks the lake with a playground,
picnic tables, grills and a beach area. The DNR boat landing on the north side of the lake is very busy with folks just
coming in for the day. The old launching site, South Pier Park, is located on the south side of Crystal Lake. It includes a
very nice accessible pier with seating, picnic tables and grills. Fishing is very popular during summer and winter months.
The Fourth of July fills the town to overflow and includes a parade during the day and fireworks at dusk over the
lake. In addition, the annual Crystal Lake Winter Festival is held each year on the 2nd Saturday in February. It
includes overwhelming participation in the Polar Dip, along with a chili cook-off, craft show and a variety of events to
bring people out. With days end there are fireworks over the frozen lake. A miraculous sight to behold by all!

The youth exhibits, whether animal or still exhibits, will be on display all week. For a list
of events and times, please visit www.montcalmcountyfairgrounds.com.
While fair week is the highlight of the year, the fairgrounds are used for many other events as well. Several horse
shows, dog shows, weddings, trade shows and camping groups have reserved the grounds for 2015. The Ash Building
is the perfect place to hold a wedding reception, family reunion, company party or any event in which you’ll need to
make room for a couple hundred people. The west wing of the building was completed in 2014 and the east wing will
be completed in 2015 with a generous contribution from the Ash Foundation. The campground offers 131 campsites,
some rustic and others with only electricity. The Fair Association is currently fundraising to make improvements to the
sites, equipping all of them with water and electricity hook-ups. Campsites can be rented by the day and would make
a fun family reunion weekend outing. The fairgrounds also offer winter storage capabilities and staging area. For more
information about rental rates and availability contact Shari Potter at 616-550-7184 or 616-754-7884.
Please visit the Montcalm County Fairgrounds website for more information and how you can become involved in
promoting our youth, our community and county agriculture.

Village of
Lakeview
The village of Lakeview, located in Cato Township, where state roads M-46 and M-91 intersect. Although much of
today’s business community is located nearby, the original “downtown” is situated a mile north. There you will find a
series of historic buildings along unusually wide Lincoln Avenue believed to be a traditional campground site for the
Native Americans who came to fish Tamarack Lake.
The village of Lakeview grew out of a series of sawmill and lumber camps back in the early 1800s. Albert French
drew up a plat for the town and in 1867 Lakeview became an incorporated village. In August of 1894 the two block
business district burnt. The lost structures were rebuilt with brick and mortar and remain, much as you see them, today.
For years, agriculture was the main industry and is still an important part of the economy. In the early 1900s the
town was producing wooden household items and furniture. In the 40s and 50s Lakeview was a bustling hub for the
cucumber industry, with dozens of storage vats and a factory producing pickles that were then sent all over the county.
A large number of automobile dealerships operated in Lakeview, unusual for a community of less than 1,200 people.
The Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Buick, Ford, Mercury, Chrysler and Plymouth were all available for sale and
service. R & C.C. Bollinger was the 10th franchised Dodge dealership in the country. Car buyers came from as far away
as Grand Rapids to take advantage of the “deals” made available in Lakeview.
Local resident, Dr. Lee Kelsey, founded Kelsey Hospital and the Lakeview Medical Clinic. Today, Spectrum Kelsey
Hospital still offers a fully equipped emergency department and just across the street is a modern clinic staffed with
doctors, physicians’ assistants, and nurses. Chiropractic, dental and eye care, a Wellness Center for rehab and personal
fitness are also available. Few small towns can boast of such quality medical care.
The Lakeview Community School system, with its K through 12th grades, located on a single campus in the village, has
one of the highest scholastic ratings in the State. Lakeview, also, has a rich religious tradition with many churches, both
Catholic and Protestant.
Lakeview has an airport with storage for private planes. Several aerial application businesses have located their
headquarters in the area and support potato growers and other agricultural operations in the community. Locally
grown vegetables supply Gerber Baby foods and potato snack food producers.
Much of the local recreation is provided by Tamarack Lake, Bass, pike, and other pan fish abound. Lakeside Park, in
the center of the village, provide a playground, picnic area and the Rader Outdoor Theater, where summer music
concerts are held most Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. The local bowling alley is open year around and
tennis courts can be found at the high school.
The population of the village has not changed a great deal in 100 years. Also remaining constant is the small-town
hospitality and an atmosphere rich in tradition and history.
The city itself encompasses 2.1 square miles of land, with several attractions in town and in the surrounding areas.
The downtown area offers all of the amenities needed to conduct business in a quaint, hometown atmosphere. There
are banks, a post office, attorney offices, the county courthouse, medical offices, grocery stores, several gas stations and
party stores, a flower shop, a music shop, a bakery, a variety of restaurants, thrift shops, hair salons, antique stores and
other businesses.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail goes through town, and runs from Stanton south to Greenville
and north to Edmore. There is ample free parking for trail users. In addition, Maddie’s Park is located on Main Street
next to the trail and offers an outside play area for children. The D. Hale Brake Park, located on south Camburn Street,
is a recreational center that boasts baseball and softball fields, basketball hoops, a tennis court, a pavilion with picnic
tables and a playground. Just five miles away, Montcalm Community College offers 3.2 miles of groomed nature trails,
historic Heritage Village, an NCAA-sized indoor swimming pool, the Barn Theater and more.
During the second full weekend in August, the town fills up with visitors to its annual Stanton Old Fashioned Days
celebration. Attractions include a variety of sporting events, an antique car show, talent shows, the crowning of Miss
Stanton, a soapbox derby, vendors, a garden tour, community yard sales, a fireman’s parade, a grand parade, an
antique tractor show and much more. Visit www.stantonofd.com for more information.
Other area attractions include Anderson & Girls Orchards, a farm with a market, gift shop, cider mill and petting zoo,
which offers fresh fruits, vegetables, cider, baked goods, an ice cream shop and more, located three miles north of town
on M-66; the Mid-Michigan Motorplex, an NHRA-sanctioned race track, located northeast of town on Wyman Road;
and several fresh-water lakes within a few miles of town.
This historic area is a destination where visitors can relax, enjoy the outdoors and make memories.
Six
Fishing, boating, swimming, and camping are just a few
common pass times that come to mind when thinking
about how to spend a weekend away or an evening after
work. In the small town of Six Lakes, such activities are
Lakes
commonly enjoyed during the spring, summer and fall
months of the year. Folks can pitch a tent or hook up a
camper in one of the local campgrounds and spend days
enjoying water sports, fishing, and boating on one of the
several lakes. During the dawg days of summer people of
all ages can experience the local summer festival, Dizzy
Days, which includes a parade, cook outs, softball and
fishing tournaments, and an assortment of family activities.
Looking ahead to summer, locals and visitors alike will be
able to rent kayaks and bikes downtown, allowing for more
ways to explore the land and lakes of the area. The winter
months offer anglers a variety of locations for ice fishing
and catching up with the local buzz of town out on the ice.
