Polyaspartic Coatings -

Latest developments for extending performance

PDA Europe Conference,

Vienna, November 18-20 2008
Do Polyaspartic Coatings fit into the PDA ?

Yes !
Polyurea is not a singular product made out of aliphatic polyether-
amines and MDI-based prepolymers

Polyurea offers a wide range of properties and Polyaspartic Coatings

are just one example out of manys

Pure polyurea as pure Polyaspartic Coatings are only based on amine-

terminated resins and isocyanate prepolymers

Still open questions

- How to speed up reactivity without changing raw materials ?

· Tertiary amines e.g. Addocat® PP

from RheinChemie Rheinau GmbH

· Light stabilizer combinations e.g. Ciba® TINUVIN® 292 / 1130 (1:1)

from Ciba Specialty Chemicals Inc.

Remarks : - DBTL will reduce the reactivity

- The “right” amount has to be tested with the
actual formulation

.2008-11 • Michael Casimir, Karl Wuehrer, Peg Kendi, page 20

Still open questions

- How to extend pot life ?

.2008-11 • Michael Casimir, Karl Wuehrer, Peg Kendi, page 22

Still open questions

- How to increase film thickness ?

The limitation of the film thickness, approx. 300 µm roller application, is based
on humidity/moisture influences during the curing time.

· Molecular sieve powder 4Å e.g. Sylosiv® A4

from W. R. Grace & Co

· Degasing : degasing of the comp. B (polyisocyanate)

increases the max. DFT due to higher
solubility of CO2 in the liquid coating
material

Still open questions

- How to reduce viscosity ?

· Reactive diluents : Aldimines / Ketimines

e.g. Desmophen LS 2963A + VP LS 2142
limitation @ approx. 5% addition due to
rapid skin formation and yellowing

· Isocyanate combinations : a blend with a low viscose isocyanate,

e.g. Desmodur N 3400

· Plasticizer : not an option, see page 9

· Solvents : due to VOC regulation in most cases

not an option
