Question 1. Toughness The following table of temperature and impact energy was obtained
from Chapry Impact test samples machined from a 1-inch thick plate of 4140 steel that was
quenched from the austenite region and then tempered for 1 hour at 600°C.
A) Plot the data and find the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) based on the
average of the maximum and minimum Charpy impact energies.

Temp Energy Temp Energy Temp Energy

(°C) (J) (°C) (J) (°C) (J)
100 89.3 -25 78.9 -100 34.3
75 88.6 -50 73.1 -125 29.3
50 87.6 -65 66.0 -150 27.1
25 85.4 -75 59.3 -175 25.0
0 82.9 -85 47.9

Your Answer:
DBTT = ~ -75°C

Energy (max - min)/2 = (89.3 +25.0)/2 = 57.15 J, which occurs roughly at -75°C

Fatigue An 8.0 mm diameter cylindrical rod is fabricated from red brass. It is subjected to
asymmetric tension-compression loading (+7500 N / -1000 N) to determine its fatigue life.

cross sectional area = pi x 64 mm2 / 4 = 50.27 mm2

7500 N / 50.27 mm2 = 149.2 MPa
-1000 N / 50.27 mm2 = -19.9 MPa

Question 2. Calculate the following stresses associated with the fatigue of this bar.

Mean stress Stress range Stress amplitude Stress ratio

(149.2 + -19.9)/2 149.2 - -19.9 =169.1 range / 2 = 169.1/2 = -19.9/149.2 = -0.13
=64.65 MPa MPa 84.55 MPa

Question 9. Do you expect this material to exhibit a fatigue endurance limit? Why or why not?

No. Only steel and iron-based alloys (some Ti alloys) exhibit a fatigue endurance limit.
Red brass, like all brasses, is composed of copper and zinc. Nonferrous alloys do NOT
exhibit a fatigue endurance limit.
