INTERNATIONAL NEWS ORGANIZATION

The International News Organization is the parent organi-
zation of the NationStates Today publication and manages
the legal representation and negotiation of agreements in-
volving the NationStates Today publication. Its primary
goal, via its publications, is to spread awareness of the af-
fairs of politics, gameplay, roleplay, and culture in Nation-
States, and to provide a democratically organized commu-
nity media effort that benefits all of its viewers, volunteers,
as well as the overall climate of NationStates.

of time and effort into building a
team and teaching them what she
knew. I tell my Viziers as soon as
they get the job that their first priori-
ty in any position should be training
their replacement. And that’s what
they do. Lynx had a small army of
capable, well-trained Gamesiders on
her hands and together they sky-
rocketed our native activity. When
Lynx decided that she wanted to
shift her focus to Legion and her po-
sition as Guardian, that would have

replacement, but Rachael was al-
ready trained, ready, and willing to
take up that mantle. Gameside did-
n’t experience any down time or de-
crease in effectiveness. Rach just
used what Lynx built, added to it,
and created her own little army of

ful. I’m really proud of that.”
During her tenure as Pharaoh,
Altino has made no less than 18 gov-
ernment appointment, dismissals
and promotions. According to Altino
this is due to the fact that, if you
can’t do the job for a bit, Osiris
should not stop just because your

“Democracies change their cabinets
really often, because they have
terms. Monarchies or governments
with consistent executives tend not
to change their cabinets as often,
because they already have a team
they’re comfortable with. Our Vi-
ziers under Syb’s delegacy, for ex-
ample, sat for the rest of his duration
as Pharaoh. That isn’t my style. I am
not a fan of democracy, but I do
think that your government should
shift, grow, and adapt often. If
you’re a Vizier but you’re going to
be busy with irl stuff for the next few
months, then I’m going to set you
down. That doesn’t mean you’ve
done a bad job – you probably have
done great – but it does mean that I
won’t pause Osiris’ progress for
months until you can come back.
Someone else is capable, someone
else has worked hard and earned it,
someone else will get that spot.
That’s a feature that’s probably a
little hard nosed on my part, but I
like it. Keeps things moving and
keeps our arms full of good advisors
who left on good terms and can al-
ways come back.”
Still, nothing can ever go 100%
well, yet Altino has few regrets
about her time, so far, as Pharaoh:
“I think there are a few things in my
earlier delegacy that I wish I would
have learned more quickly – mostly
about what is “normal” for a dele-
gate to do. That stopped me from
doing a lot of things that would have
worked because I thought a delega-
cy had to be run a certain way or
certain things weren’t possible (in
Osiris or in Sinkers, whatever) be-
cause they hadn’t been achieved be-
fore. But as we achieve them before
my very eyes, I’m finding out that
maybe they were impossible be-
cause “normal” isn’t ambitious

enough.”
Osiris has seen much diplomatic
upheaval over the last year, with
many of its long standing treaties
being cancelled and replaced with
new ones. In line with that, Altino
feels that Osiris has 2 key allies at
this moment in time:
“ In UCRs, without a doubt EMN.
We work with a lot of UCRs – espe-
cially now during wartime – and
we’re finding out that we have
things in common with them, but
EMN is like that cousin that you
were bffs with as a kid. We know
they’re crazy, but they’re funny and
they’re crazy in the way we are, so
pretty in sync and friendly. In GCRs,
TWP has been Osiris’ closest friend
for as long as I can remember.
We’ve got a real thick and thin situa-
tion with TWP.”
Before becoming Pharaoh, Altino
served as Chief Vizier of Osiris and
founded the UCR Karma. Altino be-
lieves those experiences taught her
a lot:
“The main lessons that I learned as
Chief Vizier were how to deal with
Osirans. Working with Osirans is
different than leading and motivat-
ing Osirans. So I spent my time
there generally learning what
“works” in Osiris, the kind of push-
ing that the region needed, and what
Osiris was missing to really be
great.
Osiris was mostly just missing
something that it created itself, I
think. Osiris has a lot of history, and
it’s history is still really important to
its identity in the present, but the
current generation didn’t really
have their own identity. We’ve bor-
rowed things from the past now and
kept our history relevant – like Ora-
cle is still our newsletter and Legion
is still our military – but we’ve taken
them and as a community given
them a new life on our own terms. I
think that’s helped Osiris in the pre-
sent take ownership of itself and
open up to new ideas. They’re all
really creative now and not intimi-
dated about speaking up. That’s
made a world of difference.”
“I think my time in Karma, where I
was running my own region and try-
ing to figure out from ground zero
what works and what doesn’t, has
been where my most valuable les-
sons came from. I’ve never done an-
ything in NS that I didn’t have a re-
ally good mentor to ask questions if I
needed to, but in Karma I was the
person to ask, and no one really
knew what they were doing any
more than I did. We created some-
thing cool, but it took a lot of work
and a lot of trial and error to get
there, and the stuff that I dreamed
up there has been very useful in oth-
er places.”
Syberis announced his intent to
abdicate in April of 2018 and Altino
says that she did not join Osiris with
the intent of gaining the delegacy
and with regards to her reaction
when Syberis announced his abdica-
tion, she had this to say:
“Uhhhh… Give me a couple days to
think about it.” I didn’t really come
to Osiris with delegacy on the menu.
Lol. I was there to help Syb, but I
definitely didn’t want to replace him.
Osi’s been my home since I walked
in the door, but it’s not my first pa-
rade in regional leadership. Regional
leadership is exhausting, and I al-
ready knew that. But at the end of
the day, I’ve always put what I
thought was good for Osiris over
what I personally preferred, so I ac-
cepted.”
With the abdication having been
announced, Altino began to prepare
for her eventual rise to the throne:
“In a channel in my family server
that only I could see, I started sav-
ing links, artwork, plans, and just
whatever random information or
ideas popped into my head at any
time of day and dumping them
there. Then when he actually abdi-
cated, I took all of that information,
put it in an excel sheet, and made
myself a checklist. When I felt lost or
like I wasn’t sure what to do next, I
just went back to the list and found
another thing that I could get us
started on and check off of it. It kept
me grounded and organized when I
was in the beginning so I could set
precedents that I knew would work
as we grew.”
Naturally, I asked if there was
more on the excel sheet:
“Yup. I’ve got a new idea every day,
and I always keep adding to it. I
don’t think I would run out of things
to do for a really long time.”
Altino believes that every delegate
should run the region in the way
that best suits them, not necessarily
what worked for the previous dele-
gate or other delegates:
“The best advice I ever received as
Delegate was to do things the Altino
way. There’s gonna be a certain way
in everyone’s head that a delegate
“should” be. But the real truth is all
you need as delegate is really thick

skin, loyalty to what’s good for your
region, a good head on your shoul-
ders, and the confidence to do things
your way, even if that sounds really
outlandish and different from the
way you expect a delegate to be. I
don’t feel like I fit the definition of
any delegates that I’ve seen in Osi-
ris. But I’m doing things in a way
that I can make work. If I tried to
live up to someone else, then I would
never succeed in my own eyes and
Osiris would be worse off for it. You
just sort of have to have faith in
yourself and your region, and go all
in.”
Altino admits that, although she
has always remained upbeat public-
ly throughout the last 8 months,
there have been times when she has
doubted herself:
“Absolutely. I’ve come across mo-
ments where I thought to myself,
after we finish working on this next
thing, I need to settle down and rest.
But I think I have too much fun in
creating. I get tired or stressed out,
but I forget about it entirely when I
have the chance to build something
new or think of another big project
for us all to work on. I can’t tell you
how many times I’ve gone to my Vi-
ziers and been like “Is this crazy?”
or like “Would I get in trouble if I did
this?” Those crazy ideas give me
energy again when I get too tired,
and I end up not needing the time
off.”
As Altino has said, Osiris is a meri-
tocracy and, as such, a successor
will eventually have to be chose.
With regards to her succession plan-
ning Altino still thinks she has a far
bit of gas left in the tank yet:
“Osiris is a meritocracy. It’ll be
passed along when either I am too
tired to keep doing the job, or some-
one else is better for Osiris than I
am anymore. I experience bouts of
tiredness from time to time, but for
now I’m still going strong and I
think I’ve still got some time as
Pharaoh under my belt. I’m going to
be excited to pass it along, though.
Osiris has an alarming number of
capable and smart candidates who
could do the job. Osiris is gonna be
in for a treat!”
And, despite the plan for her succes-
sion, she still has many ideas with
regards to what still needs doing in
Osiris:
“I feel like we’ve already given Osi-
ris the reboot that we needed and
now we can work on continuity.
That’ll mean making sure that what
we’ve already created doesn’t die
and building mentorship precedents
so that our new players are involved
and learning. Also, if I play my cards
right, a really good FA team. I feel
like we’ve got Gameside up and roll-
ing now, and FA is my next project.”
Altino has been a major part of the
ongoing Anti-Pacific Coalition and
NPO war, on the side of the APC.
Altino feels that the APC has the up-
per hand due to the creative minds
behind it:

“NPO is very carefully trying elimi-
nate things that they can be targeted
with. For example, when presented
with the prospect of a region under
their ownership losing the password
that protects it, they gave up and
ran away rather than risk a battle.
That was a weird move for such an
egotistical region, but it was smart.

Coalition Negotiations
Much controversy was abound in
the days following the swearing in of
the Senate, as LIB Secre-
tary Josephtanoffered both the ma-
jor parties his party’s support in the
Senate in exchange for the position
of Chancellor, which is the Senate
leader. This particularly shocked
CON as they had been expecting to
continue their coalition with them,
as per the status quo prior to the
election. Several minor party mem-
bers criticised LIB for the move,
with SOC Secretary New
Academ claiming on the RMB that
“‘Liberal Democrat’ and ‘political
opportunism’ are synonymous”. In
order to avoid working with LIB in a
coalition, ACT Secre-
tary Riost initially proposed a
‘centrist’ coalition of ACT, CON, and
UNI. This was eventually rejected
by CON Secretary Trade Federa-
tions in favour of an alternative coa-
lition of CON, UNI, and NAT. How-
ever, this too ended up failing on the
basis of NAT not wishing to work
with UNI. With escalating pressure
and no tenable alternative, Trade
Federations seemingly caved
to Josephtan’s demands and pro-
posed to continue the CON-LIB-NAT
coalition with a new Co-Chancellor
position shared
by Ormantum (CON)
and Josephtan (LIB). As Riost put
it: “the coalitions were a mess.”
However, the drama is not over
yet. The new power-sharing agree-
ment has prompted Sena-
tor Ghan (ACT) to seek a judgment
of the region’s High Court as to
whether the position of Chancellor
can be jointly held by two nations.
Opponents of the shared role claim
that the Constitution identifies it as a
singular position in its language,
whereas proponents are arguing
that the wording allows for more
flexibility. Riost labelled the co-
position as “overcomplicated and
unnecessary,” and Justice O-
Broki stated on 7 January that “the
court is deliberating on the motion
for dismissal.”

APC is the brainchild of some of the
most creative minds on NS, and I
think that creativity partnered with
a well organized team are our big-
gest assets. APC’s outreach efforts
aren’t a flashy job, but they’re wildly
successful and are giving some
younger GPers a chance to seriously
show their skill, learn in a group set-
ting, and make new friends. Plus,

Resignation of the Prime Minister
Adding to the complexities of the
coalition negotiations, newly-elected
Prime Minister Frost-
Hammer (CON) was forced to re-
sign on 6 January, claiming in the
RMB post detailing his departure
that he was “officially sworn-in to
the United States Army” and would
soon be embarking on training,
specifying, as per the Constitution,
that Deputy Prime Minis-
ter Reformed Badad (CON) would
succeed him in the role. However,
some have accused his replacement
of being inexperienced and relative-
ly unknown in the community.
Earlier in December, Frost-
Hammer was surprisingly selected
as the CON candidate for Prime
Minister in the party’s primaries
ahead of widespread favour-
ite, Calponia. The unsuccessful run-
ner-up claimed in an interview with
the Regional Media Company after
the shock loss to “have accepted an
offer to run as Frost-Hammer’s Dep-
uty Prime Minister,” which, ulti-
mately, did not eventuate.
While Calponia described his dismis-
sal from the promised appointment
as “a head scratcher,” Frost-
Hammer put it down to “a difference
in policy,” concerning the appoint-
ment of Senator Maylande (CON) as
the new Deputy Prime Minister up-
on his imminent resignation.

region, retained this role, he would
have ascended to Prime Minister
instead of Reformed Badad, which

Recently, Altino won
the NationStates Gameplay
Award for Best Politician, and she
feels that the main reason she won
seems to have disappointed several
citizens.
The Prime Ministerial election it-
self was held later that month and
operated in a two-round system,
where the two candidates who re-
ceived the most votes in the first
round faced off head-to-head in the
second round. While Frost-
Hammer achieved the most votes in
the first round, incumbent Prime
Minister Bergonnia (LIB), who sur-
prisingly won the previous election
six months earlier, narrowly ranked
third, only four votes be-
hind Riost (ACT). The second round
saw Riost eventually withdraw with
only a few days left of voting due to
real-life commitments, endorsing his
opponent, who eventually won 77-

round, a claim which may likely
have been true had it materialized.
Following this election and the
inauguration of the elected officials
on 1 January, rumors came alive
that Prime Minister Frost-
Hammer would resign within the
first two weeks of his tenure. The
process for resignation of Cabinet
members is specified in the Consti-
tution as that the relevant deputy is
promoted and they then appoint
their own second-in-command. In
anticipation of this occurring and the
relatively unknown Deputy Prime
Minister Reformed Badad ascending
to the top job, Sena-
tor Baconbacon123 (CON) divided
his party by attempting to quickly

that would instead require a by-
election for the vacated post. In full,

“Should the Prime Minister or any
elected member of the Cabinet re-
sign or be removed from office with
75% or more of their term remain-
ing, a snap election will be held for a
replacement, regardless of any dep-
uty the Prime Minister or Cabinet
member may have had.”
Some have suggested that the Sena-
tor’s motion may have been residue
from Calponia’s loss in December,
however, Calponia has claimed
that Reformed Badad “has my sup-
port for now.” Frost-Hammer called
the amendment “disgraceful” and “a
move by many opportunists across
different parties to achieve power,”
but dismissed claims of bad blood in
CON, saying Baconbacon123 had
since apologized and “now we are all
on good terms”. Reformed Ba-
dad himself described the situation
of his rise as “strange” and “pretty
worrisome,” but that he hopes “to
settle everyone’s fears and prove
that I can be a good PM.” The pro-
posal was formally withdrawn from
the Senate by its author on 3 Janu-
ary.
However, the Senator has not fully
backed down from his intention for
reform on the matter, stating that it
“may be easier to pass legislation
forcing candidates to declare their
deputies before election.” He has
now also displayed some neutral
confidence in the new Prime Minis-
ter, saying that “he will do okay in
the job.”
Prime Minister Reformed Ba-
dad officially took office on 8 Janu-
ary. He has identified his priorities
as population growth, increasing
“participation from smaller nations,”
building new embassies, and work-
ing with the founder to ensure that
“all parts of the region’s government
can work together smoothly,” per-
haps signifying a non-partisan de-
sire for calamity in the wake of
much tension and disruption during
the post-election fallout.

The Communist Bloc, The Interna-
tionale, The Leftist Assembly,
and The Versutian Federation. Col-
lectively, they make up the second
largest WA bloc in terms of endorse-
ments. While the organization has
yet to live up to its fullest potential,
with the election of the new Chair-
person (leader) Goncar, this may in
fact change.
An Interview with Goncar
Goncar is the current Delegate of
the Social Liberal Union. He was
previously nominated to be chair
last term, but chose to decline the
nomination for fear of time con-
straints. During the most recent
election, he accepted and became
Chairperson with a unanimous vote
by The Council (the representative
body of the member regions in the
ILC). Upon being asked on his feel-
ings to being elected, Goncar ex-
pressed his excitement and his
hopes for his term.
“I am very honored to be elected
chair. The fact that all of the dele-
gates had confidence in me to fulfill
the duties of chair. My goals are to
look into bringing some more re-
gions that are similar to the current
region members. Also, I’d like to see
our members and encourage them
to put their own bills in the GA and
SC. I’d like to also make sure there
is more conversation between the
regions.”
Goncar previously served
in numerous positions within his
region, including Minister of For-
eign Affairs, and WAD. This will be
the first time he steps up to lead an
organization of multiple regions.
Nonetheless, he has expressed his
confidence in his abilities.
“I feel that since that I’m a specialist
in FA and served in the SLU
(Minister), DSA (Cabinet Aide) and
TVF (Deputy Minister) Foreign Af-
fairs Ministries that I may be very
qualified to take on the job. I have
many friends in all the regions so
I’m quite excited.”
As a member of an ILC founding re-
gion, Goncar naturally was a part of
the planning and negotiations that
formed the current ILC. While he
admits that the ILC has not reached
its fullest potential, he has faith that
it can reach it.
“I feel that the ILC hasn’t reached
its potential yet. I’ll be clear, we are
not a defense organization. But I
think we could a very influential WA
bloc. We have thousands of member
nations now and as long as we sup-
port each other, we should be a
strong bloc.”
Alongside this, Goncar also has ex-
pressed his numerous plans for the
Coalition, which include making it
more active and building support
and interest from member region’s
citizens.
“I think the structure and discus-
sions of the ILC is rather good how-
ever I’d like to see more discussion
in the server. I’d like to see conver-
sation between all regions whether
it be for general talk or about the
resolutions at vote. I’m not sure how
it is in the other regions but the SLU
doesn’t care too much for the SC and
I’d like to see that change a little bit
so that we can vote a little. Some-
times some people just forget to vote
and as we are a WA legislative bloc,
we should care for both.”
As to his future hold on the position,
Goncar has expressed both hope of
being re-elected, but also recogni-
tion of the concept that he may not
be reelected, something he is just as
satisfied with
“Honestly, the thought hasn’t run
through mind yet since I just took
over a week ago. I wouldn’t be sur-
prised if I was asked run again. I
also wouldn’t be surprised to be let-
ting someone else have it.”
While it remains to be seen how ef-
fective Goncar is at fulfilling his
goals, the ILC seems to be in capa-
ble hands. If he is effective, the in-
ternational community may very
well be witnessing the rise of a new
WA power.

Three in a Week: Ministerial Resignation and Controversy in TLA
Senators voting in the Leftist Assembly. The leftist region has seen resignation after resignation to ring in the new year.

The Leftist Assembly (TLA) is one
of NationStates’ largest left-wing
regions, typically boasting between
200 and 250 nations. This has been
in large part due to successful re-
cruitment campaigns carried out by
the Minister of Recruitment (often
referred to as the MoR), a post cre-
ated 12 months ago when the region
sat at just 115 nations. As per the re-
gion’s laws, a Minister will be ap-
pointed directly by the Secretary,
the Head of Government, if the can-
didate already serves in the General
Assembly (TLA’s elected legisla-
ture, composed of 5 Senators, the
Prime Minister and the Secretary),
or nominated by the Secretary and
confirmed by the General Assembly
when the Secretary’s chosen candi-
date does not serve in the General
Assembly. However, in the space of
just 7 days, TLA has seen 3 people
serve as the Minister of Recruit-
ment, including a term that lasted
less than 24 hours for a nation that
appears to have been appointed to
the post by mistake. To further com-
plicate matters, the sudden resigna-
tion of the Minister of Media has left
the region’s newspaper, The Red
Star, in the lurch, with proposals to
abolish the post that maintains it
having been proposed in response to
its sudden vacation.
January 2nd – Argentigrad’s
Resignation
Argentigrad was TLA’s 4th Minister
of Recruitment, appointed by cur-
rently-serving Secretary New Arka-
dosafter the December 2018 elec-
tions, to fill a position which had pre-
viously been held by Prime Minis-
ter Nottinhaps. Argentigrad, having

held the post for just under 2 weeks,
the shortest tenure of any Minister
of Recruitment up until that point,
delivered a statement on TLA’s
RMB to confirm his resignation, cit-
ing technical difficulties that would
make it impossible for him to begin
his work. Argentigrad would go on
to thank New Arkados for giving
him the opportunity to serve in the
role, and Nottinhaps for teaching
him how to carry it out. At the time,
veteran Assemblian and Found-
er, Cedoria, would publicly comment
that the resignation “means we can
expect to see a new MoR soon.”
What would follow, however, was
not expected.
January 6th – A New
Acting Secretary
Radio silence would follow for sev-
eral days from Secretary New Arka-
dos, with no announcement being
made on a new Minister of Recruit-
ment for 4 days. On January 5th,
Senator Dawtania would confirm
that the General Assembly, TLA’s
elected legislature, had not dis-
cussed Argentigrad’s replacement
since the day before his public resig-
nation. New Arkados would finally
comment on the issue on the 6th,
apologizing for his inactivity and
announcing that Prime Minis-
ter Nottinhaps would be taking over
as Acting Secretary for 3 days,
as New Arkados dealt with unspeci-
fied IRL happenings. New Arka-
dos would, however, state that he
would announce the new Minister of
Recruitment “tomorrow barring
some bad circumstances; otherwise
I give Nott [Nottinhaps] the right to
do so.”
January 7th – Grod
Island’s Appointment
On the morning of January 7th,
Secretary New Arkados would an-
nounce the appointment of Sena-
tor Grod Island to the post of Minis-
ter of Recruitment, amidst a contin-
ued decline in population that had by
then exceeded 2 weeks.
NSToday can exclusively re-
veal that, according to a user close
to the situation, New Arkados did
not check whether or not Grod Is-
land had the necessary facilities to
carry out their role, nor did Grod
Island explain that he lacked said
facilities until after his appointment
to his new role. This error in com-
munications would only serve to
turn the situation from a slow minis-
terial appointment to a political con-
troversy, something rarely seen in
TLA’s generally uncontroversial po-
litical workings.
January 8th – One In, Two Out
The next day, Acting Secre-
tary Nottinhaps would proceed to
check whether or not Grod Is-
land had the facilities to carry out
his new role and, upon finding out
that he did not, announced to the
region that Grod Island’s appoint-
ment had been a
“misunderstanding” and over-
ruled New Arkados’ previous state-
ment, calling it
“redundant.” Nottinhaps would pro-
ceed to promise that a new Minister
of Recruitment would be appointed
within 24 hours. Shortly thereaf-
ter, Grod Island would address the
issue directly, confirming
what Nottihaps had said. Grod Is-
land’s tenure as Minister of Recruit-
ment, from New Arka-

dos’ appointment to Nottinhaps’
overruling, lasted just under 24
hours. Nottinhaps would stay true to
their word, as Senator The Final
Horseman was appointed to the po-
sition of Minister of Recruitment
around 5 hours after Grod Is-
land was removed from the position.
This, however, would not spell the
end to the region’s Ministerial woes
that day as, that afternoon, the Min-
ister of Media (MoM), Libertasnia,
came under fire as there was no visi-
ble sign that a new edition of The
Red Star (TLA’s government-run
publication, maintained by the Min-
ister of Media) was going to be pub-
lished before the legal deadline of 28
days. Libertasnia would soon take to
the RMB, lashing out at claims that
his tenure lacked effort by stating
that he was unable to produce The
Red Star as there were no high-
quality submissions coming in, and
that he wasn’t willing “to publish
something that isn’t held to a stand-
ard of at least coheren-
cy.” Libertasnia would go on to re-
sign from the position of Minister of
Media, and leave TLA to join The
Internationale.
With the loss of the Minister of
Media, the future of The Red
Star now appears to be in doubt.
Suggestions of abolishing the paper
or reforming it as a less academic
publication have been made
since Libertasnia’s resignation, and
two proposals that would abolish the
position of Minister of Media entire-
ly have been co-signed by two Sena-
tors, and are expected to be dis-
cussed and voted on in the near fu-
ture. Whatever happens, this is un-
likely to be the end of the story.

Divided Forever? The Utopianis and Georgis Conflict

In 2018, the Utopiani Repub-
lic launched a war of independence
against the Universal Pact after
having been a territory of the Pact’s
government since the 1967 Georgi-
Utopiani war. The region’s problems
escalated when the Georgi Repub-
lic ceded from the Utopianis, caus-
ing a bitter war. This conflict within
a conflict was only stopped via an
intervention by Daunlaund,
Havadar and Cansilica, the three
great powers of the region. This has
led to many observers and people
close to the conflict pondering: can
the Georgis and Utopianis coexist
together within a single nation?
In fact, the two peoples were united
under one roof once — but, in 1878,
the two were partitioned due to ris-
ing tensions. This came ‘as a delight
to everyone’, according to the coun-
try’s current leaders. Peace lasted
until 1967, when the Georgis invad-
ed. However, the Universal Pact in-
tervened, and the two nations were
reunited under the control of the UP
Government.
The United Pact
When asked about the time when
they had been governed as a territo-
ry of the United Pact, Utopiani Pres-
ident Ruscht Bilblisi was over-
whelmingly positive about it. He
stated that the Pact “brought peace
to the land and kept the Georgis at
bay,” but also remarked that the
Utopiani people “wanted their own
state,” instead of being under the
direct jurisdiction of the Pact.
When asked about the Universal
Pact, Georgi President Tomaas
Grêldïg was also optimistic. He
claimed that there were many ad-
venturers to the “Wild West” of the
region, who were “nice people, who
really wanted to learn something
about our culture and habits.” He
also mentioned that their presence
was beneficial for trade and that
they only “built […] settlements on
land that wasn’t inhabited.”
Statements About The Situation
We sat down with the Utopiani and
Georgi presidents, who offered con-
trasting opinions on the situation in
their region.

“The Georgis started a war against
us in 1967 and the UP stepped in and
took the territory under its wing.
The people didn’t like this, and so in
2018 started a rebellion against the
UP. But then the Georgis started
attacking our cities and war be-
tween Utopianis and Georgis com-
menced. The Georgi Republic start-
ed a war that brought the destruc-
tion of the peace maintained there
for centuries. They massacred Uto-
pianis in cities, such as Drevlem and
Rblisi, until the UP member states of
Daunlaund, Havadar and Cansilica
stepped in to stop the fighting. In
2018 both sides were partitioned as
independent states.”
Georgi President
Tomaas Grêldïg
“After a long struggle for freedom
and safety for our citizens, we finally
managed to get independence. This
meant we gave our people the insur-
ance that no longer they had to fear
from bloody Utopiani attacks. Be-
cause now we are a proud and inde-
pendent republic with an profession-
al army and government. Thou-
sands of Georgi have died in their
struggle for independence. They
have been killed or slaughtered by
Utopiani.
That’s why we are so happy that we
don’t live close to them anymore,
there is a big wall on the border, to
keep our kids safe. We will be watch-
ing to keep them safe. We never
wanted war or conflict, but we have
always reacted when we were at-
tacked. Now that we are independ-
ent, we also want to keep up the
good friendship with the rest of the
UP and trade with them.”
Recent Events
In recent weeks, the construction of
a border wall between the two na-
tions has been completed. The new
addition to the Utopiani-Georgi bor-
der has sparked even more divide
between the two peoples, even esca-
lating to the point that Utopiani citi-
zens were arrested in Daunlaund.
Daunlaundic officials say the rea-
sons for the arrest are being re-
viewed in the Ereckia City High
Court.
The Final Question
The final question we asked them
was adapted from the statements of
the other. However, it was never
mentioned that it was said by other
leader.
To Utopiani President Ruscht Bilbli-
si: If someone was to say that
Georgi people were slaughtered by
your people, how would you reply?
“It is factually correct…
…but we must not dwell on these
things. We must move forward.
We did as bad as they did, but they
started it.”
To Georgi President Tomaas
Grêldïg: If someone was to say that
your people massacred people in
Utopiani cities, how would you re-
ply?
“If it wasn’t a lie, it would have been
a reaction of our people towards the
constant fear of a Utopiani attack.
Or a reaction towards the constant
bombing of our cities by Utopiani
terrorists.”
Summary
There are two things the Georgi and
Utopiani republics have in common
– positive relationships with the Uni-
versal Pact and a passionate hatred
for each other. Despite this, there
may be more that unites them than
divides them. They blame each oth-
er for conflict, but they want peace.
There is still hope that they can,
over time, heal their broken relation-
ship.
Not all is yet lost.

win against Llorens, but the safety
of their lead would end in dramatic
fashion on Matchday 8 (January
10th) after what was expected to be
a comfortable win over a rock-
bottom Morvan would turn into a
humiliating and unexpected 1-0 de-
feat, allowing Soviet Micronesia to
claw back the gap. The Four
Stars’ own 1-0 victory
over Kavagrad would put them level
on points with Nottinhaps at the
time of writing, with Nottinhaps only
leading by virtue of a goal difference
advantage.
Fans of exciting football will love
watching Cedoria play, seeing that
the national side’s matches have av-
eraged almost 5 goals per game,
with some games reaching 7 or even
8 goals. By contrast, howev-
er, Kavagrad’s Redhearts have con-
sistently seen the most boring foot-
ball in the league as a result of their
extremely defensive style of play,
resulting in only 5 goals scored and
5 conceded over their 7-game run so
far. While the ILFA Premier Divi-
sion will occasionally see a bore, no-
score draw, the league has also seen
heart-stopping 9-goal thrillers, such
as Ovskiland’s 5-4 win over Heisa,
and Heisa’s own 6-3 victory
over Morvan. With the title picture
taking shape, and the potential for
much more exciting football to come,
the future is bright for fans of foot-
ball within the interregional left.

There’s a new Moshir in town! A conversation with Benja, military head in Osiris.

Despite existing for many years,
the Sekhmet Legion of Osiris was
never exactly the most active mili-
tary in the world. However, this has
begun to change recently with the
legion performing 47 tag raids since
the 28th of May, with 637 hits – an
average of 13.55 per raid. These are
pretty impressive numbers- espe-
cially considering that the legion has
just ~20 people in it. The Legion’s
Jump Point, Nineveh, has 253 em-
bassies at the time of writing.
So what is behind this remarkable
resurgence from the once inactive
military? Between the 14th of July
2016 and the 27th of May 2018 the le-
gion performed 11 raids, with the
majority coming in October and No-
vember 2017 as now Guardi-
an Mghnb worked his socks off to
try to revive the Legion. Therefore,
answer is not what, but who. The
person in question is Benjabobaria
(Benja), who was recently promoted
to Moshir (Marshal) of the legion,
and who came runner-up for the Up
and Coming Raider Award in the
NSGP awards. I sat down with Ben-
jabobaria to talk about various top-
ics ranging from his early begin-
nings in NS to his meteoric rise to
the top.
Although he is now a raider to the
core, Benja had leanings to the con-
trary in his early years on Nation-
States:
“In December of 2016 I was recruit-
ed by Bedetopia, a regional officer in
Psychotic Dictatorships (where I
was spending all my time) to take
part in a piling mission. I later found
out that he was in The West Pacific
Armed Forces, and ended up joining
in April of 2017. I was honestly more
defender-leaning at the time, but
quickly grew to enjoy raiding.”
Benja has enjoyed a very brief but
action-packed career in NS so far,
having only joined the game in No-
vember of 2015:
“From November 2015 to March
2016 I was largely just answering
issues on my main nation and lurk-
ing in 10000 islands. In March 2016 I
founded my dictator nation and
spent an increasingly large portion
of my time in NS answering issues
on it and doing dictator RP in the

Around late September, every year since
2017 (twice that year), there has been a day
on NationStates devoted entirely to thou-
sands of people frantically logging into their
various puppets, clicking buttons, hoping
that the system won’t make them wait the 8
seconds to launch their next missile.
“N-Day” is a day of fear. It involves nations
banding together, flooding groups, called
factions, with puppet nations in order to
build up a larger volume of missiles. You

December 2016 I joined my first NS
discord related to the mission
Bedebao had recruited me for and
gradually became less interested in
issue answering and more interest-
ed in R/D. In essence, once I got my
first taste I couldn’t get enough. In
April 2017 I joined The West Pacific
Armed Forces, and stayed there for
a year, learning a lot about raiding.
For a variety of reasons, I jumped
ship for The Black Hawks in early
April 2018 shortly after they were
blacklisted by TWP. For a time, I
felt like I had no home region in NS –
TWPAF was my only home until I
left it, and had few friends in TBH.
However, I got involved in Osiris
and its military in May after finding
out that my favourite TWPAF com-
mander, Altino, was about to be-
come delegate. While I was involved
in many other militaries until recent-
ly, Osiris started to feel like home
rather quickly after I joined it, and
my other military commitments
quickly became secondary.”
One thing Benja finds attracts him to
places is people he knows and gets
on with being there, without that he
may have stayed in The Black
Hawks:
“Well I knew that Altino and other
people I knew from my TWPAF
days were in Osiris. I knew very few
people in TBH until several months
after I had joined, and I had only
been there for little more than a
month when I joined Osiris. I also
knew that Osiris and TWP were mil-
itary allies and that I could see old
friends by raiding with them as a
Sekhmet Legionnaire. I also missed
the general environment of a GCR
military, and the ability to become
an officer and be able to train other
people in a relatively short amount
of time.”
Benja took on a truly herculean task
when it came to making the legion
relevant again and when asked why
he did this he simply said:
“Ambition for power/relevance was
definitely part of it, but that does not
come close to telling the entire story.
I knew that the Legion had been
something in the past, and thought
that it had potential to be something
good given a constant push. But at
the end of the day I mostly just
can almost feel the rage, and terror, of the
person located thousands of miles away
from you who has just been targeted by a
missile. It’s a day when you are forced to
trust other players to protect your nation
while you sleep, even though you will most
likely be up at 3:30 am, directing missiles at
your enemies. And once you feel like you
are getting into the swing of things, N-Day
is over and you have lost.
You go back to the slow game that Nation-
States is, the way it is intended to be. You
almost always forget that in less than a
month, you and your allies will be planning
a course of action for hurling zombies at
your enemies.

of TWPAF at its peak days and
wanted to create something similar.
And once I started raiding regularly
with Sekhmet, I really started to en-
joy being a part of it, regardless of
how few other people cared to the
same degree as me.”
Benja has managed to achieve a
task many thought was nigh impos-
sible. When I asked how he achieved
such a monumental feat, he had this
to say:
“In summary, I cared where others
did not. Since I joined the Legion I
have consistently been active – par-
ticularly in terms of triggering –
which ensured that raids were al-
ways happening on a regular basis.”
Benja went from new recruit to head
of the Legion in just under 6 months,
and he admits he did doubt himself
at times:
“Considering how I regularly did
stupid shit as an officer and got rep-
rimanded for it, most definitely.
However, I always managed to learn
from my mistakes and move on, re-
gardless of how long it took.”
With the rise of technological aids to
help during the raid itself many
have begun to question how long old
school raiding, with manual triggers,
can last. However, Benja feels that a
successful raid should be the reward
for hard work beforehand and that
old school raiding still has a place in
a world of increasing automation:
“I mean, raiding is ultimately about
having fun, so if people find it fun to
have a bot trigger for them and do
90-puppet raids with breeze or what-
ever, then good for them.
But personally I like raiding for the
payoff of successful preparation, so
I’m generally not a fan of increased
automation in raiding. I also like
trigger-jumping and having to do
lots of things at once during the up-
date, so I totally wouldn’t want a bot
that triggered for me. And even if
tools do exist to automate the raid-
ing process, people should still be
taught how to trigger and raid man-
ually. Knowing how to trigger with
Spyglass and nothing more gives
one a greater understanding of how
raiding actually works than when
Last spring, Trading Cards were introduced
to NationStates for April Fools. Again, peo-
ple were on NationStates every two
minutes, this time, checking packages for
cards that could be considered valuable. I
took in a sigh of relief when Trading Cards
ended because I have little self-control and
found myself holed up in my bedroom like a
troll, for the entire length of the event. This
is not healthy.
Sure, these limited time events that draw
huge amounts of people to the site probably
bring in a ton of ad revenue, but that doesn’t
mean that I like it. Hey, I’ll probably contin-
ue to participate in Z-Day and N-Day but I
have turned off cards, and I ask all of you to

everything is automated. And people

Having gone from newbie to sea-
soned veteran in a short space of
time, Benja has some pointers for
newbies just getting started in
R&D:
“-Do what you enjoy – most morality
in R/D is superficial. Defending,
raiding, or both – do whatever floats
your boat. And if you don’t enjoy it,
find something else to do!
– However, don’t destroy offsite
property (discord servers/forums)
or be a jerk outside of in-character
regional destruction. That will right-
fully get you blacklisted from many
regions.
– The more ambitious you are for
power, the more you will have to
learn by trial and error.
– Don’t be afraid of occasional fail-
ure, and be able to learn from your
mistakes – but don’t be an idiot.
– Don’t waste your time with toxic
people! There are plenty of R/D re-
gions in the game and if you don’t
like your current one there is likely
another you can go to.
– Don’t spread your focus too thin –
if you want to be respected you need
to dedicate your focus to one or 2
regions.
– Stay away from fascists – whether
NS’s hate for them is entirely ration-
al is debatable, but they will ruin
your reputation nonetheless. Just
avoid them at all costs.”
One thing is for sure: the Sekhmet
Legion appear to have a great future
ahead of them, after all they have
performed 47 tags raids in 7 months
whilst still being nowhere near their
best. There is surely more to come
from Osiris’ military.
I also see a bright future in raiding
for Benjabobaria, who has more in
the tank yet, and it appears likely
that Benja has the potential to be
one of the main, if not the main fig-
ure, in the raiding community for
many years to come.

think about what they do to your sanity.
Am I calling you to turn off cards and rebel
against the use of them? No. I just remem-
ber that I found myself continuing to play
this game because it required little of my
time. When my allies were counting on me
to aid them during N-Day and Z-Day, the
biggest reason I was playing was thrown
out the window. Now, since then, I have
taken on responsibilities that require more
of my time (e.g. NationStates Today) but I
don’t find myself trying to use every minute
I possibly can. I can sit back, turn up the
music, relax, and do what I enjoy, playing
NationStates, and on my own time.
