Scientific assessment

The BAuA project "Mental Health in the World of Work - Scientific Assessment", which
started at the beginning of 2014, was completed in May 2017 with the presentation of the
final report. The research project aimed to prepare the state of knowledge on mental work
factors in the work, to assess the transferability of existing knowledge to changing working
conditions and to identify knowledge gaps on mental stress factors, stress constellations
and their effects on humans. In addition, the available design knowledge as well as
existing research deficits were determined.

The "Mental Health in the Workplace" project produced scoping reviews for more than 20
factors of work and assigned them to four thematic areas: "work task", "leadership and
organization", "working time" and "technical factors".

The project was divided into three phases and was closely followed by a committee of the
BAuA Scientific Advisory Board.
Phase 1 - Knowledge Processing
At this stage, scoping reviews on the relationship between work condition factors and
mental health were prepared. These each describe the existing state of knowledge. The
creation of the Scoping Reviews was based on a common guideline.

Phase 2 - deepened knowledge

In this phase, the BAuA invited scientists to expert discussions and also asked for
comments on the scoping reviews . In the expert discussions, overarching questions were
in the foreground, among other things on causal relationships and research gaps, on
design options and on the relevance of the topics in the changing world of work. The
members of the Committee of the BAuA Scientific Advisory Board acted as godparents for
the preparation and conduct of the expert discussions. The notes from the comments and
the expert discussions then used the BAuA to revise the scoping reviews .

Phase 3 - Knowledge Application

In the third phase, the findings were discussed with OSH and policy stakeholders. The
project was completed by a report in which the results are presented and
recommendations for occupational safety, occupational health management and related
policy areas are derived.
The final report was presented in a joint event with the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social
Affairs (BMAS), the Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA) and the
German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) on 5 May 2017 in Berlin. It forms the basis for
the dialogue process "mental health in the working world".

An dem vom BMAS, dem DGB sowie der BDA getragenen Dialogprozess ist die BAuA als
wissenschaftliche Begleitung und der Vorsitzende der Nationalen Arbeitsschutzkonferenz
(NAK), als Schnittstelle zum Arbeitsschutz, beteiligt. Er hat das Ziel, die betriebliche
Umsetzung geeigneter Maßnahmen für den Erhalt und die Stärkung der Psychischen
Gesundheit zu fördern. Dafür sollen die Befunde der Studie vertieft diskutiert,
Schlussfolgerungen für die Gestaltung einer gesundheitsgerechten Arbeitswelt gezogen
und konkrete und messbare Ziele zur Umsetzung vereinbart werden.

The dialogue process is accompanied by a steering committee, which also includes

decision-makers from industry associations and individual trade unions. Other design
partners to safeguard mental health in the workplace (especially accident and other social
insurance carriers) are also included.
