WHAT IS A DRY TYPE TRANSFORMER?

A dry type transformer is defined as a transformer in which the core

and windings are not immersed in an insulating liquid. A dry-type
transformer having one or more windings encapsulated in solid
insulation is called an encapsulated winding dry-type transformer
whereas non-encapsulated winding dry type transformer have non of
the windings encapsulated with solid insulation.

Various national and inter- national standards:

IS-11171 - Specification for Dry type Power Transformer
IEC-726 - Dry type Power Transformer
ANSI.C.57.12.01 - General Requirement for Dry type Distribution
and Power Transformers

Station Auxiliary Transformers
Excitation Transformers
Lighting Transformers
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

a) Position the transformer (core coil assembly) at the designated

place on the foundation.
b) Auxiliary supply to the limit switches and winding
temperature scanner should be given as per layout drawing.
c) Before energizing the transformer all accessible parts on HV
and LV terminals should be tightened. It should be checked
that no metallic object, such as wires or tools remain inside the
enclosure.
Assemble the transformer rollers and other accessories as per
General Arrangement Drawing of the transformer.
d) After completion of installation, carry-out following pre-
Commissioning Checks
PRE-COMMISSIONING CHECKS:
Visual inspection - check for any damage, breakage of parts.
Check the continuity of H.V. & L.V.
Check HV & LV connections.
Check insulation resistance values.
Check LV neutral connection.
Check all auxiliary wirings.
Check transformer earthing.
Check transformer enclosure earthing.
Check LV (N) earthing.
PRE-COMMISSIONING TESTS:
Winding Resistance Measurement.
Measurement of voltage ratio and vector relationships.
Insulation resistance measurement.
OPERATION
ENERGIZING THE TRANSFORMER:
Ensure that connections are done as per General Arrangement
Drawing and Rating & Diagram Plate Drawing, links are set at
same position for all three phases, transformer enclosure doors
are closed, transformer enclosure is earthed and transformer
LV neutral is earthed before energizing the Transformer. It is
advisable to run the transformer on no-load for a day before fully
loading the transformer. This helps in improving the IR values.
b) CHANGING OF TAP LINK:
For changing the tap link switch-off the incoming supply to the
transformer, open enclosure doors. Ground the live parts,
especially HV tap links and bushing terminals of all 3 Phases
using a hot stick.
For changing the tap link, box spanner suitable for M16 Nuts
needs to be used. HV voltage corresponding to various link
positions is indicated in Rating & Diagram Plate drawing.
PERIODIC INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE:
a) Ensure that the transformer is kept free of dust & other
obstructing material on the enclosure.
b) Check protection circuit periodically.
c) Check the Winding Temperature scanner & Limit
Switches.
d) Ensure that the transformer is not overloaded.
NOTE:
In case of repair, it should be de-energized and the
enclosure case should be grounded. This ground should
be connected to all transformer coil terminals. These
connections must be removed before the transformer is
placed in service.
CONCLUSION

Dry type Resin cast Transformers requires very little

maintenance from time to time. However, inspection
should be made at regular intervals & corrective measures
shall be taken when necessary to ensure the most
satisfactory service from this equipment. Evidence of
rusting, corrosion on enclosure and deterioration of the
insulation and paint should be checked and corrective
measures shall be taken whenever necessary.
