Date Hours Description of Work/Progress

11/13/18 – 4 I spent quite a bit of time looking for a way to complete my creative endeavor. I looked
11/16/18 into using Google Image Search and artificial intelligence. Once I decided that
artificial intelligence was the best choice, I researched about how I could use artificial
intelligence to recognize foods.
11/19/18 – 6 I spent most of the week trying to learn all I could about how to create an artificial
11/23/18 intelligence to complete my application. Unfortunately, toward the end of my research,
I realized that it would take way too long to create an artificial intelligence that can
recognize many types of food.
11/26/18 2 I remembered that there was an app that could already recognize food in an image.
After a few Google searches, I found that there were quite a few projects of this sort
already on GitHub. After a couple hours of searching for a reliable project, I found a
code pattern that was developed by IBM utilizing their Watson artificial intelligence.
12/11/18 1 Despite it being my birthday and having multiple tests on that day, I spent an hour
after school downloading the programs I needed to build the application that was
provided by IBM.
12/26/18 – 3 I spent an hour and a half each day trying to follow the directions to build the app.
12/27/18 Unfortunately, I ended up getting frustrated each time and gave up.
12/28/18 4 Upon realizing that I would have to present in less than two weeks, I committed to
finishing the app that day. However, upon finishing it, I could not get it to work.
1/3/19 2 I spent two entire hours trying to figure out the problem. It turns out I copied the wrong
server URL and the application was trying to send information to the wrong server.
1/7/19 – 4 I spent my free time helping Scott finish up the website. I basically just helped fix any
1/8/19 issues he had with the code and changed a few design elements.
1/9/19 1 With the application working, I spent about an hour trying to figure out what foods the
application could recognize. I even went into the teachers’ lounge and discovered that
while Ms. Moriyama’s salad could not be recognized as food, the candy canes could
be recognized. I also discovered that I could take pictures of an image of food and the
application would be able to recognize it.
