1. What is the CPU and what does it do ? (central processing unit; sorts, manages and changes information)
2. What is a search engine? (a program that searches the Internet for a web page that contains what you’re
looking

Question1
a. Define the following terminologies: Desktop, Icons, File , Folder (4Marks)
Answer
Desktop:is a personal computer designed for regular use at a single location on or near a desk or table due
to its size and power requirements.
File: A file is a collection of information, with a unique name, stored in your computer or on a removable disk.
Folder: Folders are special files that can hold multiple files. They allow you to organize information. Folders can
hold both files and other folders (subfolders).
Icons:An icon is a symbol or image that represents files, applications, shortcuts, or devices.

B.What are the difference between save and save as?

Save: - It is used to save a document or anything (which you want to save) with a name.

SaveAs: - Is used to save an already saved document or anything (which you want to save) with a new
name.

C. Define a computer? And explain the parts of a computer? (5 Marks)


 Computer is Electronic device which can accept input data it process, Store and display an output.
1. Input device: The device through which computer receives data is known as an input device.
Example- Mouse, Keyboard, Joystick, Trackball, Scanner etc.

2.Output device: The device through which computer display the processed result at the end of each process is
known as an output device.Example- Monitor, Printer, Speaker etc.

3. Memory unit: It is the storage unit of a computer where computer store all its data.
A memory unit is divided into two types...

Primary memory

* High-speed memory.
*Small storage capacity.
Secondary memory
*Slow access speed.
*High storage capacity.
*Use to store data permanently.Example- Hard disk, CD, DVD, Memory Card,etc.

4.Processing unit: Processing unit of a computer is also known as CPU(central processing unit).
A central processing unit (CPU) is the electronic circuitry within a computer that carries out the
instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetic, logical, control and input/output
(I/O) operations specified by the instructions.
D. What are the differences between Hardware and Software?With an examples (3 Marks)
Answer: Computer hardware includes the physical parts or components of a computer, such as
the central processing unit, monitor, keyboard, computer data storage, graphic card, sound
card, speakers and motherboard.
Software is a program that enables a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to the physical
components of the system.

e. State the functions of the following applications


Spreadsheet: Besides performing basic arithmetic and mathematical functions, modern spreadsheets
provide built-in functions for common financial and statistical operations.
Word Processors: Copying, pasting, moving and deleting text within a document. Formatting text, such
as font type, bolding, underlining or italicizing.

PowerPoint: presentation is a combination of slides, handouts, notes, and outlines all in one file. You
can add text, graphics, photos, clip art, sound, and video to your slides.

Answer:Define the term malware? List and explain different types of them briefly (6 Marks)
Malware, or malicious software, is an umbrella term used to refer to viruses, Installed without the user’s
consent, malware is designed to disrupt computer operation, collect sensitive information, or gain
unauthorized access to a computer, device, or network.

A) Worms: Self-replicating malware that uses a computer network to send copies of itself to other
computers
B) Virus: An intrusive program that infects computer files and may cause damage
C) Trojans: Destructive program that masquerades as an application
D) Spyware:Malware that collects information on user browser habits without their consent
Some uses of the internet
Def: The Internet is a huge number of computers that are worldwide connected to each other. These
computers are situated in many different countries and are connected through telephone lines, cables in
the ground and even satellites in space

A network: is a group of two or more computer systems or devices linked together to share data,
applications and / or peripherals

1. Get information online about a university, college, and school.


2. Download games, videos, pictures, computer programs and other files.
3. Send instant messages.
4. Look information about a place.
5. Pay bills online.

 Internal hard disk(A computer’s internal hard disk is its primary storage device for digital
data)
 External hard disk(An external hard disk is one that you can plug into your
computer, usually using a USB cable)
 CD and DVD (store more datasimilar)
 USB flash driver(USB flash drives are small external memory devices that plug into a USB
port)
 Memory card(A memory card, or a flash memory card, is a form of storage often used in
devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, music players, video game consoles).

a) What is operating system? List different types of operating systems that you know (5 Marks)
Operating system: These systems, and their related utilities, enable the computer to function
