4G
4G LTE
AND IMS
Overview
4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) has quickly become the
access network technology of choice for next-generation
cellular network deployments. It allows mobile operators
to offer high-speed mobile connections and cost effective
Internet applications, and has been confirmed as the fastest
developing mobile system technology ever.
NETWORK
At the same time, the use of multiple vendor technologies
PERFORMANCE creates new challenges in gaining end-to-end visibility of
performance and availability of 4G LTE and IP Multimedia
MANAGEMENT. Subsystem (IMS) networks and services. The result: a data
collection challenge that puts mobile operators at risk of
not having visibility into critical network elements when
issues arise. This “visibility gap” puts 4G LTE and IMS teams
in the dark at exactly the time they need complete, real-time
visibility into infrastructure performance.
Additionally, mobile operators face the challenge of monitoring large
scale networks as LTE/IMS architecture collapses what were previously
two separate networks (voice and data) into a single all-IP system. These
networks may include as many as five core, multi-vendor systems: radio
access network, aggregation and backhaul, Ethernet packet core, MPLS
transport/backbone, and the IMS core.

MEETING 4G To meet these challenges, SevOne delivers a real-time, end-to-end view of

the infrastructure, independent of Element Management System (EMS) and
equipment type, and performance metric collection methods. This enables
NETWORK mobile operators to:

PERFORMANCE • Effectively manage and optimize capacity while reducing LTE, backhaul, and
IMS expenditure and customer churn.

CHALLENGES. • Proactively monitor LTE and IMS performance to ensure the infrastructure at all
points meets current service level agreements and addresses future demands.
• Optimize LTE and IMS infrastructures to support increased multi-media traffic
levels, markets and geographies.
• Isolate, determine and alert on performance issues ahead of service impact
to meet and exceed customer expectations.

SevOne provides breakthroughs in speed, scalability and ease of use, providing

complete and immediate visibility by collecting and monitoring all performance
indicators, with no limits. Regardless of infrastructure size, it delivers affordable,
real-time system wide visibility without sacrificing the speed required to effectively
troubleshoot service-impacting events.

LTE AND IMS SevOne integrates with the vendor-specific EMS for each LTE and IMS component
for the bulk collection of key performance statistics. This unique approach avoids
the overhead of directly polling or collecting performance data from individual
PERFORMANCE network elements, and reduces the overhead of adds, moves and changes as
the number of network elements grow. SevOne employs standard network
VISIBILITY. performance protocols to collect, report and graph performance statistics
directly from routers, switches, servers and firewalls, as well as every application,
operating system, or process that is generating network traffic. In addition, it
gathers flow data, giving mobile operators crucial insight into bandwidth usage
and performance, and enabling them to look beyond simple network utilization
statistics, so they can identify who is talking to whom, and who is using the most
network resources.

SevOne works with leading mobile operators to collect performance statistics

from the EMS of their Backhaul, IMS and LTE equipment providers. Starting
with routers at the cell-site and following the data path back through the entire
network to the core, SevOne can monitor all of the components in the data
path (including eNodeB, PGW, SGW, MME, PCRF, CSCF, HSS, and more) and
deliver an end-to-end view of the LTE and IMS infrastructure, independent
of equipment type.
This capability coupled with SevOne’s support of more than fifteen performance
metric collection methodologies, including SNMP, NetFlow. J-Flow, sFlow and IP
SLA, provides end-to-end collection and monitoring capabilities for 4G LTE and
IMS infrastructures.
