PRECAUTIONS
A
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT
PRE-TENSIONER" INFOID:0000000002979165

B
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of C
this Service Manual.
WARNING:
• To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by D
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
• Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag E
Module, see the SRS section.
• Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or har-
F
ness connectors.

BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE)
< SERVICE INFORMATION >
BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE)
System Description INFOID:0000000002979166

BCM (Body Control Module) controls the operation of various electrical units installed in the vehicle.
BCM FUNCTION
BCM has a combination switch reading function for reading the operation of combination switches (light, wiper,
washer, turn signal) in addition to the function for controlling the operation of various electrical components.
Also, it functions as an interface that receives signals from the combination meter, and sends the signals to
ECM using CAN communication.
COMBINATION SWITCH READING FUNCTION
Description
• BCM reads combination switch (lighting switch, wiper switch) status, and controls various electrical compo-
nent according to the result.
• BCM reads information of a maximum of 20 switches by combining five output terminals (OUTPUT 1 - 5)
and five input terminals (INPUT 1 - 5).
Operation Description
• BCM periodically outputs pulse from the five input terminals
(INPUT 1 - 5) simultaneously.

PKID0801E

• BCM periodically activates the transistor (output terminal side) in descending order (OUTPUT 5 → 4 → 3 →
2 → 1).
NOTE:
BCM changes transistor activation frequency under the sleep status.
• Normal status
When BCM is in the normal status, the transistor activates every 10ms.
• Sleep status
When BCM is in the sleep status, BCM enters power save mode. The transistor activates every 30ms.

PKID0605E

Revision: 2007 September BCS-4 D40

BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE)
< SERVICE INFORMATION >
• Input terminal (INPUT) voltage changes according to transistor
activation [output terminal (OUTPUT) side] after turning any switch A
ON.
• BCM receives the pulse change as a signal from the output termi-
nal (OUTPUT). BCM detects the signal with the BCM interface.
B
• BCM judges which switch turns ON by the signal-detecting inter-
face and the signal detecting timing.

Operation Table of BCM and Combination Switches

BCM reads operation status of the combination switch using the combinations shown in the table below. J

PKID1119E

NOTE:
Headlamp system has a dual circuit.
P
Front Wiper Intermittent Operation
Front wiper intermittent operation is determined from a combination of 3 switches (INT VOLUME 1, 2, and 3)
and vehicle speed signal.
Wiper Intermittent Dial Position Setting

Revision: 2007 September BCS-5 D40

BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE)
< SERVICE INFORMATION >

Wiper intermittent dial po- Intermittent operation Combination switch

sition interval INT VOLUME 1 INT VOLUME 2 INT VOLUME 3
1 Short ON ON ON
2 ON ON OFF
3 ON OFF OFF

4 OFF OFF OFF

5 OFF OFF ON
6 OFF ON ON
7 Long OFF ON OFF

Example: For wiper intermittent dial position 1

Using combination switch reading function, BCM detects ON/OFF status of INT VOLUME 1, 2, and 3.
When combination switch status is as listed below, BCM determines that it is wiper Intermittent dial position 1.
• INT VOLUME 1: ON (Continuity exists between combination switch output 1 and input 3.)
• INT VOLUME 2: ON (Continuity exists between combination switch output 1 and input 5.)
• INT VOLUME 3: ON (Continuity exists between combination switch output 2 and input 4.)
Example (When lighting switch 1ST position is turned ON)
1. TAIL LAMP switch joint in combination switch turns ON when setting lighting switch to 1ST.
2. Current flows from INPUT4 when activating the OUTPUT5 transistor.
3. BCM judges the lighting switch position as 1ST when detecting voltage change by flowing the current.
4. BCM transmits position lights request signal to IPDM E/R with CAN communication.
5. BCM judges that lighting switch holds the position as 1ST when detecting voltage change by activating
the OUTPUT5 transistor again.

PKID1120E

NOTE:
Each OUTPUT terminal transistor is activated at 10 ms intervals. Therefore, after switch is turned ON, the
electrical loads are activated with a time delay. However, this time delay is so short that it cannot be noticed.
BCM STATUS CONTROL
BCM changes its status depending on the operation status in order to save power consumption.
1. CAN communication status
• With ignition switch ON, CAN communicates with other control units normally.
• Control by BCM is being operated properly.
• When ignition switch is OFF, switching to sleep mode is possible.
• Even when ignition switch is OFF, if CAN communication with IPDM E/R and combination meter is
active, CAN communication status is active.
2. Sleep transient status
• This status is to prepare for shuts down CAN communication when ignition switch is turned OFF.

Revision: 2007 September BCS-6 D40

BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE)
< SERVICE INFORMATION >
• BCM transmits sleep request signal to IPDM E/R and combination meter.
• Two seconds after CAN communication of all control units stops, sleep transient status switches to CAN A
communication inactive status.
3. CAN communication inactive status
• With ignition switch OFF, CAN communication is not active. B
• With ignition switch OFF, control performed only by BCM is active.
• When all controls that BCM performs stop, CAN communication inactive status switches to sleep status.
4. Sleep status
C
• BCM is activated with low power mode.
• CAN communication is not active.
• When CAN communication operation is detected, sleep status switches to CAN communication status.
• When a state of the following switches changes, sleep status switches to CAN communication status. D
- Ignition switch (ACC, ON)
- Key switch
- Hazard switch E
- Door lock and unlock switch
- Front door switch (driver side and passenger side)
- Rear door switch (RH and LH)
- Combination switch (passing, lighting switch 1ST position) F
• When control performed only by BCM is required by switch, sleep status switches to CAN communica-
tion inactive status.
