When asked whom they would vote for if the election were held today,
“Given the margin of error (plus or minus 4.5%), this race can be a close one. It
may come down to which candidate can drive the undecided voters in their
direction,” said Jeanne Zaino, coordinator of the Iona poll and a professor of
political science at the college.
The poll was commissioned by RNN-TV in cooperation with the WCA Call to
Action Campaign’s Decision 2010. The poll included calls to over 10,000
registered voters on October 18.
The 40th Senate District is regarded as one of several key races in determining
the future balance of the State Senate. The 40th includes parts of northern
Westchester, all of Putnam and parts of Dutchess.
The latest results differ from the first Decision 2010 poll conducted on the 40th
District race on October 1 – 3 which showed 45% for Ball, 35% for Kaplowitz and
20% undecided.
Michael Kaplowitz
Favorable view 37%
Unfavorable view 35%
Undecided 28%
Zaino noted, “Both candidates seem to have favorability issues, which is unusual,
with Kaplowitz seemingly having the most yet to demonstrate to voters since
28% are still undecided about their favorability view of him.”
• Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? New York State
government has become so ineffective it is time to vote all current officials
out of office and elect new people to serve.
Agree 51%
Disagree 34%
Not Sure 16%
“This poll result shows voters in this district still express a relatively strong anti-
incumbent sentiment,” Zaino added.
• Voters in this second poll were also asked which candidate they trusted
more to help turn around the state’s economy. The results:
Greg Ball 43%
Mike Kaplowitz 38%
Undecided 9%
“Voter opinion in this election year is heavily influenced by pocketbook issues,
and voters in this district are currently favoring Ball to work on and fix economic
issues. However, the large undecided proportion on this question indicates that
there is considerable uncertainty in the voters’ minds which means both
campaigns have a lot of convincing to do,” Zaino commented.
Also, 15% of voters polled indicated that they had watched the WCA Decision
2010 debate between Ball and Kaplowitz aired on Regional News Network RNN-
TV on October 7, 2010.
• Non-party voters are also likely to agree with the statement that all New
York State elected officials should be voted out of office (52% answered
yes).
• Of the 17% of voters who are undecided about which candidate they
would elect, 24% of them have an unfavorable view of Ball compared to
19% who view Kaplowitz unfavorably. Moreover, 43% of these undecided
voters agree that NYS elected officials should be voted out of office.
• 25% of Democrats are undecided about their favorability towards
Kaplowitz while 20% of Democrats are undecided about whether
Kaplowitz can do a better job at fixing the state’s economy.
The final RNN-TV/WCA Call to Action Campaign Decision 2010 debate will be
held for New York’s 37th Senate District in New York between incumbent Suzi
Oppenheimer (D) (WF) and challenger Bob Cohen (R) (C) (I) at 6 PM,
Wednesday, October 20, at 800 Westchester Avenue (Fifth Floor Auditorium).
