Dear Mrs. Boutilier:

For my capstone idea I will be working with students at Exploratory Learning & Academy at
Moylan School. I used to attend this school and I want to work with students who lack
self-confidence in English, because I know what it is like to not have any in yourself when it
comes to speaking a new language. I will be tutoring ESL students at ELAMS twice a week. I
will be a tutor at ELAMS on Thursdays and Fridays from 1:50 till 3:25. I will be focusing on
working with students in grades K-2 and will be assisting teachers in their classrooms with
students who struggle to speak English or even speak English at all. The overall goal of my
project is to support and help the students I am working with at ELAMS to become better
English language learners. I am really excited to give back to the students at my former
elementary school. My capstone project is a great opportunity to help students in the community
and more importantly help students in a situation that I have been in.

My research question is: What are the effects of bilingual tutoring for Spanish speaking
students? This question will be relayed to my project because what I will be doing is helping
spanish speaking students with their English in reading and writing. And I will be helping them
within their classroom settings. This relates to my project because I know what it is like to
struggle on speaking a new language with little support, so I do not wish for these students to go
through what I went through. My artifacts while I will be documenting this project will be
mainly emails, lesson plans, and photos/videos (if possible) to capture what I will be doing while
I am with the kids. I will also be showing student testimonies and student activities while they
are going to be with me.

As of right now the ELS teacher Mrs. Baez is going to be my mentor since she is the coordinator
for the ESL program at Moylan School, I have already sent out multiple emails discussing my
schedule with both groups of students and I have already began my work at the school. I predict
by the end of this year these kids would be able to speak some fluent words in English but with a
heavy accent since they are still quite young but will be able to communicate with the English
speaking students. I believe this will push me to keep helping kids in any way that I can because
I love kids and I love teaching them new things, also helping them grow along the way I know
for sure that I will too.

Sincerely,

Caylee Morales
