Aim: To test for the products of combustion of
kerosene.

Procedure
(A) To test for carbon dioxide.
1. A kerosene lamp is lightened up.
2. The soot given out in a test tube is
collected as shown in Figure 5.20.
3. Some lime water is poured into the test
tube.
4. The test tube is shaken and any changes to
the lime water is observed.

(B) To test for water


1. A 500ml beaker is inverted over a kerosene
lamp.
2. The droplets of liquid that form on inner
surface of the beaker is tested with using a
piece of blue cobalt chloride paper.

Observations
The colour of the blue cobalt chloride paper
turns red.

Conclusions
The combustion of kerosene gives out carbon
dioxide.
