V. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
COMMUNICATION & NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT EXPLANATION
On each ship, without exception types ship must have systems and equipment
communication and navigation. This equipment has a very important function for
safety of the ship and its crew. Meaningful communication equipment is all
equipment that has the functionality to communicate and facilitate better
communication was communication between the crew inside the vessel, the ship to
ship, and the ship to the port. While understanding the navigational equipment are
all tools used to ship sail to keep it out of the path of the voyage as well as
maintaining the safety of the ship itself along with its crew and also so that the
ship's position can be known. There was also equipment addition that has a very
important function, namely emergency lighting, which serves to illuminate the ship
during an emergency such as blackout and the ship will sink or fire. Rules
concerning communications set out in SOLAS Chapter IV and navigation on chapter

CRYSTAL MAIDEN route is Dumai, Provinsi Riau, Indonesia - Thai Oil Terminal,
Sriracha, Thailand it covered in sea area 2, excluding sea area A1, within the radio
telephone coverage of at least one MF coast station in which continuous DSC
(2187.5 kHz) alerting and radiotelephony services are available.
1) EQUIPMENT OF RADIO COMMUNICATION
This ship is design to sail until area 2, so that it must follow Solas Regulation 7
radio equipment general and regulation 9 about Radio equipment: Sea area A1, A2

The list bellow is the main point in Solas regulation 7 Every ship shall be provided

No. Item
a VHF radio installation capable of transmitting and receiving:
DSC on the frequency 156.525 MHz (channel 70). And radiotelephony on the
1
frequencies 156.300 MHz (channel 6), 156.650 MHz (channel 13) and
156.800 MHz (channel 16);
a radio installation capable of maintaining a continuous DSC watch on VHF
2 channel 70 which may be separate from, or combined with DSC on the
frequency 156.525 MHz (channel 70)

band or an frequencies dedicated for AIS
a receiver capable of receiving international NAVTEX service broadcasts if the
4 ship is engaged on voyages in any area in which an international NAVTEX
service is provided;
a radio facility for reception of maritime safety information by the Inmarsat
enhanced group calling system. if the ship is engaged on voyages in any area
of Inmarsat coverage but in which an international NAVTEX service is not
provided. However, ships engaged exclusively on voyages in areas where an

HF direct-printing telegraphy maritime safety information service is provided
and fitted with equipment capable of receiving such service, may be exempt
from this requirement.

subject to the provisions of regulation 8.3, a satellite emergency position-

6
indicating radio beacon (satellite EPIRB)

Then from regulation 9 SOLAS the main point is said In addition to meeting the
requirements of regulation 7, every ship engaged on voyages beyond sea areas A1,
but remaining within sea area A2, shall be provided with:

No. Item
an MF radio nstallation capable of transmitting and receiving, for distress
and safety purposes, on the frequencies:
1 1.1 2,187.5 kHz using DSC; and
1.2 2,182 kHz using radiotelephony;

an radio installation capable of maintaning a continuous DSC watch on the

2 frequency 2, 187.5 kHz which may be separate from, or combined with, that
required 2,187.5 using DSC

means of initiating the transmission of ship-to-shore distress alerts by a radio

service other than MF operating either:
3
3.1 through the polar orbiting satelite service on 406 MHz; this requirement
may be fulfilled by the satelite EPIRB

3.2 on HF using DSC; or

3.3 through the Inmarsat geostationary satelite service by a ship earth
4 station or by the satellite EPIRB required by regulation 7.1.6, either by
installing the satellite EPIRB close to, or by remote activation from, the
position from which the ship is normally navigated.

2) EQUIPMENT OF NAVIGATION
Rule of navigation said for navigating safely it must be follow Solas from Chapter V
Regulation 19, we could know Carriage requirements for shipborne navigational
systems and equipment, the main point shown in the table bellow:

a properly adjusted standard magnetic compass, or other means,

1 independent of any power supply to determine the ship's heading and display
the reading at the main steering position;
a pelorus or compass bearing device, or other means, independent of any
2
power supply to take bearings over an arc of the horizon of 360°;

3 means of correcting heading and bearings to true at all times;

nautical charts and nautical publications to plan and display the ship’s route
for the intended voyage and to plot and monitor positions throughout the
voyage. An electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) is also
accepted as meeting the chart carriage requirements of this subparagraph.

an electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) is also accepted

as meeting the chart carriage requirements of this subparagraph.

a receiver for a global navigation satellite system or a terrestrial

5 radionavigation system, or other means, suitable for use at all times
throughout the intended voyage to establish and update the ship’s position
if less than 150 gross tonnage and if practicable, a radar reflector, or other
6
means, to enable detection by ships navigating by radar at both 9 and 3
when the ship’s bridge is totally enclosed and unless the Administration
determines otherwise, a sound reception system, or other means, to enable

emergency steering position, if provided.
9 a spare magnetik compass interchangeable with the magnetic compass
a daylight signalling lamp, or other means to communicate by light during day
10 and night using an energy source of electrical power not solely dependent
upon the ship's power supply.
a bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS),The bridge navigational
11
watch alarm system shall be in operation whenever the ship is underway at
an echo sounding device, or other electronic means, to measure and display
12
the available depth of water;
a 9 GHz radar, or other means to determine and display the range and

shorelines and navigational marks to assist in navigation and in collision
speed and distance measuring device, or other means, to indicate speed and
14
distance through the water;
a gyro compass, or other means, to determine and display their heading by
15 shipborne nonmagnetic means, being clearly readable by the helmsman at
the main steering position
a gyro compass heading repeater, or other means, to supply heading
16
information visually at the emergency steering position if provided;
a gyro compass bearing repeater, or other means, to take bearings, over an
arc of the horizon of 360º, using the gyro compass or other means referred to
