Increasing Trend of illicit drug abuse in Thailand

Drug abuse is increasing rapidly in today’s society, and It is also a huge social issue in
Thailand. There are many causes and reasons why people use drugs. With these causes, It
increases the rate of drug abusers in Thailand every year.

Drug abuse is the use of illegal drugs which then create a major health and social
problems that affect almost every part in life. There are many types of drugs in these days.
They include methamphetamine, anabolic steroids, club drugs, cocaine, heroin, inhalants,
marijuana and prescription drugs, including opioids. Drug abuse will cause addiction which
may result in a drug overdose. For example, an overdose of drugs damage the liver causing
liver failure or lead to death. Drug abuse also causes social issues in Thailand such as violence,
stress, and child abuse. There are many causes and reasons why people choose to use drugs.
The most common causes of drug addiction come from the things people have been through
in their lives examples like trauma or abuse, mental illness, low self-esteem, poverty,
relationship problems, stress, family problems, chronic pain or medical conditions. Each year
the number of drug abusers in Thailand increase very rapidly. According to the Annual Judicial
Statistics of Thailand in 2001, It states that there were around 364,200 people who got
arrested and recorded for the legal case with 93.8 million tablets of methamphetamine. The
numbers of drugs and drug abusers continue increasing every year up until today which
government is still finding ways to suppress these drug abuses. Within these years in 2018,
the Committee on Narcotics Control had written the recorded article about the numbers of
drugs that imitated throughout the country. There were 420,768 people who got arrested in
the legal case with 490,255,954 tablets of methamphetamine. By comparing the numbers of
the tablets of drugs, we can see clearly that the trend of illicit drug abuse in Thailand is
increasing very drastically.

The trend of drug abuse in Thailand is still increasing due to numbers the people who
have suffered from addiction. Unfortunately, these recent rates prove that addiction is also a
lifelong battle. 5/5
