Abstract

Knowing Noise Induce Hearing Loss (NIHL) as significant threat for TNI AU pilot
based on various researches in Indonesian Air Force Bases

The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) relies on the strength and capability of
air squadrons in carrying out the key tasks of national defense. Air squadrons
deployed in various parts of Indonesia consist of various types of aircraft and pilots
who run them. Flight activities by various types of aircraft, especially those with
rotary wings, produce noise with high intensity. NIHL is deaf due to exposure to loud
noise beyond the limit. The results of the noise survey at Halim Perdanakusuma Air
Force Base in 2003 showed that 23.8% of TNI AU pilots suffered from NIHL (Hanum,
2006). Comparative analytical research in 2014 based on audiometry results found
11.82% its prevalence. Research in Roesmin Nurjadin Air Force “Fighter” Base
found that 23% of flight Ear Nose Throat (ENT) problems were NIHL (Saputra,
2017).
We found out there is a significant correlation between prevalence of NIHL
and flight activities on TNI AU Pilots. Optimization of safety efforts includes the
implementation of "restricted noise hazard areas", setting work schedules according
to threshold values, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment/ Hearing
Protection Equipment- must be applied continuously for preventing this threat in the
future.
