INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Paper

When we talk about the grammar of a language then that comes to mind is how to
arrange the words contained in the language into a series of meaningful , which can be
understood both by the speakers and the hearing . Therefore, learn grammar in English is to learn
how to use the word in a standard sentence patterns in English . Subject verb agreement is one of
the grammar in English , which is very important to make a standard sentence in English.

Subject- verb agreement is a rapprochement between the verb with the subject line in
terms of number, namely : singular or plural. Subjects can be either a noun , pronoun , or other
construction acting as a noun , like gerund and infinitive . Basically, the singular subject ( single
subject ) use the singular verb , while plural subject ( subject plural ) using a plural verb ( verb
plural ) .

2.1 Definition of subject verb agreement

Subject- verb agreement is a rapprochement between the verb with the subject in terms of
number, namely : singular or plural. Subjects can be a noun, pronoun, or other construction
acting as a noun , like gerund and infinitive . Basically, the singular subject use the singular
verb , while plural subject using a plural verb.

Generally in the present tense , singular verb form base form of the verb with the added suffix
-s . As for the plural verb with no added suffix -s. These rules also apply verb on the subject in
the form of a third person ( third person , for example: Ricky , Anna ) and all personal pronouns
(they , we = plural ; he, she , it = single ) , except I and you . Although the form of a single
subject , I and you are paired with plural verbs .

Single subject should have a singular verb . Similarly, the subject should have a plural verb
plural . This we call the suitability of subject- verb ( subject-verb agreement) .

The most important provision in the English language is that between a subject with a verb must
be in agreement . That is, if the subject of his singular , the verb is also to be singular. Conversely
, if a plural subject , the verb must also be plural

Explanation is as follows :

1. Singular subject-singular verb

. What is meant by the singular subject is a subject pronoun he, she , and it or nouns that can be
replaced with he, she or it . While the definition of singular verbs is verb1 + es / s , is / was , and

the verb phrase such as : is / was + verb – ing / verb3 , has + verb3 , has been verb – ing and has
been verb3

2. Plural subject-plural verb

What is meant by the subject is plural subject pronouns like I, we , you , they , and all plural
nouns . While that is a plural verbs are verbs and verb phrases besides singular verbs above .

Example :

 A bus hits a tree.

 Two buses hit a tree.

 A cup of tea is

 Two cups of tea are more than enough.

2.2 The Types Of Subject Verb Agreement

Subject-Verb Agreement When Subject Separated By prepositional Phrase Or By

Expressions. A. Subject-Verb Agreement When Separated By A Prepositional Phrase

If the subject with a verb separated by a prepositional phrase ( two or more words preceded by
the preposition ) , prepositional phrase does not affect the verb . Noteworthy is what the subject
of the sentence. If the subject of his singular , the verb is also to be singular , whereas if the
plural subject , the verb must also be plural .

Singular subject + (prepositional phrase) + singular verb

Plural subject + (prepositional phrase) + plural verb

In addition to the above prepositional phrase , expressions such as together with , along with ,
accompanied by , and as well as, also did not affect the verb .

3.1 Conclusion

Subject- verb agreement is a rapprochement between the verb with the subject line in terms of
number, namely : singular or plural. Subjects can be either a noun , pronoun , or other
construction acting as a noun , like gerund and infinitive . Basically, the singular subject ( single
subject ) use the singular verb , while plural subject ( subject plural ) using a plural verb ( verb
plural ) . Subject verb agreement refers to the fact that the subject and verb in a sentence must
agree in number. In other words, they both must be singular or they both must be plural. You
can’t have a singular subject with a plural verb or vice versa.

3.2 Suggest

Similarly, we can describe the material that is the subject of this paper, of course, there are still
many shortcomings and weaknesses, because they lack the knowledge and the lack of reference
or the reference has to do with the title of this paper. Author much hope dear readers, providing
constructive criticism and suggestions for the perfect proposal to the author in the writing of the
