FOREWORD

The Ruy Lopez, or Spanish

Opening, is the most

famous of all openings. White's initial three moves

were recorded as early as 1490 and analyzed by the Spanish priest Ruy Lopez in 1561. Despite the exten-

sive depth and length

years, it continues to be a" popular opening among chess players. Mastery of either side requires tactical

of opening analysis for over 400

alertness and strategic planning. Even today, chess

masters quickly fall into traps and pitfalls

arising from

the Ruy Lopez. It is the task in the present volume to

Ruy

bring together these traps and pitfalls of the

Lopez from practical games. Here, then, is a rich col-

lection of 500 such miniatures, with examples from

grandmasters and world champions to woodpushers

and duflers. To

assist the reader seeking a particular

opening, the games have been

variation of this

arranged by the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings

(ECO) Index.
