CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter will present different related literatures and studies of social media addiction.

This chapter will be the basis of our research to a further understanding. It will help to

deepen the understanding about social media addiction.

RELATED LITERATURE

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION

Addiction usually define as an obsessive behaviour that may leads to negative

effects. It can constrained them to do a certain activities that may distracted other

important activities such as works and school. Social media addiction is often refer to

someone who use forms of social media excessively. There is no research that tells social

media addiction as a disease or disorder. Therefore, someone who use social media too

much can be considered social media addict (Walker, 2018).

In addition, medical professionals have shown that social media addiction

possesses all of the criteria that describes addiction. For example, using social media

more often than intended, looking more social media usage and losing interest in other

activities. At Chicago, social media addiction must be stronger than cigarette and booze

addiction according to cravings of several hundred people for several weeks (Walker,

2018).

Furthermore, if someone reacted to your post or commented something it makes

you feel happy. It can boost your self-confidence. This is one of the reason causing the

addiction. The affection you received from social media may lead you to use it more.

Some researchers conclude that social media addiction is similar to cell phone addiction
disorder. Even before, excessive use of social media and cell phone may cause negative

impact on someone's life (N/A, n.d.).

TYPES OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION

Obviously, social media addiction is classified as a type of behavioural addiction

which states mostly from problem in personal and social life. Besides social media

addiction is like other type of addiction like gambling and others, because it also governed

by personal life style and habits (Chak & Leung, 2004).

According to Laird (2012) there are 10 types of social media addicts. They are the

alert lover, the social guru, the verb creator, the vowel hater, the blog reference, the self-

proclaimed, influencer, the multi mayor, the liker, the constant checker and the last is the

freak out-err.

By knowing social media personality types, it will help you to know whether you

are social media addict. Addiction to social media will never really disappear, it will just

lessen (Darell, 2011).

ADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

In fact social media helps and serve as the pathway for communication and in

easier life. Social media has an advantages in human life (Griffiths, 2018).

Social media has a lot of advantages but one of the most important advantages of

social media is the easy way of communicating between people. Social media users can

keep in touch with their love ones who lived far away and also it helps in terms of business.

Furthermore, according to Claywell (n.d.) there are five advantages. The first one

is worldwide connectivity, commonality of interest, real-time information sharing, targeted

advertising and increase new cycle speed.

In addition, social media is become popular in the past years. As technology

developing, people will benefit (Ahmad, 2016).

However, according to Ahmad (2016) there are ten advantages of social media in

the society, they are connectivity, education, help, information and updates, promotion,

noble cause, awareness, helps government and agencies fight crime, improves business

reputation and last is the helps in building communities.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION

Social Media brought a lot of advantages. It helps in the progress lives of the users

and in the society. However, social media affects the society in a negative way. It provided

not only the advantages but also the disadvantages (Ahmad, 2016).

According to Ahmad there are ten disadvantages of social media for the society.

They are cyber bullying, hacking, addiction, fraud and scams, security issues, reputation,

cheating and relationship issue, health issues, social media causes death and the last

one is the glamorizes drugs and alcohol (Ahmad, 2016).

Before engaging to social media, you should try to consider the advantage of it.

They are backlash, cyberbullying and crimes against children, risks of fraud or identity

theft, time waster and last is the corporate invasion of privacy (Claywell, n.d.).

Furthermore, some studies looked at the impact of social networking. A common

complaints social media making people less social, they have more time in using social

media than socializing with others. And making people more aggressive (Claywell, n.d.).

REDUCING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE YOUTH

Having knowledge about online social networking can help to reduce the negative

impact on youth well-being. Australian Psychology Society (APS) did a survey on the
impact of technology and social media on the well-being of Australians. The findings is

that young people are using social media an average of 3.3 hours each day (Grove,

2017).

Grove (2017) states that parents should try to ask their children to tell what's going

on with their social media. Being informed about it can help their children on how to

manage social media properly.

In addition, waller (2016) states some tips on how to control social media addiction,

first is turn off your notification, limit yourself, get a new hobby, spend more time with your

loved ones, make it a treat, meet people in real life and last go cold turkey.

Related Studies

This study summarizes all about impact of social media sites in the form of

psychological and behavioural aspect of the participant. Also, social media’s effect among

students. In addition, it represent the relation of social networking sites (SNS) between

the well-being self-steam that a participant has. Moreover, it also focus the efficient

strategies to prevent the addiction to social media.

Yao and Zhong (2014) intend to observe the relationship between internet

addiction and other psychological problems. A cross-lagged panel did a survey to the

college students in Hong Kong. The results show that the excessive use of Internet can

cause loneliness. This study also found that communicating through online with friends is

not that effective, compare to the offline social interaction in terms of reducing loneliness.

Internet addiction disorder is one of the most recognized mental health issue

worldwide. It is involving in uncontrolled use of Internet. Addiction in the internet analyse

as a psychological problem. It might affect one's work in their daily life (Yao and Zhong,

2014).

In addition, interacting with others in person could help to reduce internet addiction.

This may help to stop the possibility of excessive use of Internet. Summing up, results in

the study shows the cycle between loneliness and internet addiction. In 2012, The

American psychiatric association recommended including “Internet Used Disorders”. As

they have said, users may avoid suffering addiction through interaction and socializing

with others especially with their peers, family and friends. As its effect, the following must

observed. First, users may suffer depression. Second, loneliness may observed and

participant were lack of companionship and lastly, mental, physical, emotional, and

sociological behaviour may affect and change in unexpected outcomes.

However, on Cabral (n.d) study, he use Griffiths’ six components that determine

behavioural addiction: salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict and

relapse. This study deals with youth’s generation addiction to the online platforms that

affects behavioural addiction and other factors. The purpose of this study is to identify the

causes if teens in terms of using social media sites.

Kaplan and Haenlein (n.d) define social media as a group of Internet-based

applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, which

allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content.

According to Cabral (n.d), this generation, social media become one of their

priority. Using social media make them feel satisfied.

Thus, researchers jump into the capability of Internet habit and the Internet's

impact on other conduct changes. Through evaluating essential socioeconomics

alongside mental and conduct suggestions, researchers stay torn on whether Web habit

exists at the end of the day concur that the new computerized age influences the

advancement of the human personality (Cabral, n.d).

Otu (2015) found out that students of the University of Ghana are active users of

social media. Entertainment is the major reason why students of Ghana use social media.

The study come up to the existence of addiction to social media among students but it is

not that frightening. This study shows that Ghana is has not been cleared out of the

impacts of progression in advances like the web despite the fact that contrasted with other

places where comparable examinations have been done.

Moreover, Al-Mena (2015) come up with a conclusion in his study that student with

higher media addiction rate does not excels in academic performance compare to the

student who is either moderately addicted or not addicted. Although, this study did not set

to point out the relationship between social media addiction and academic performance.

The research focused on students, social media is an important issue that needs to

consider.

To conclude, there is generally low dependence to web based life among students

of the University of Ghana, but it can be conclude that excessive use of social media does

affects academic performance. Although addiction to social media is not yet in the

alarming rate. But all addictions has negative effects in aspect of life, it may need a

concern so therefore it needs to stop the negative effects on students’ performance (Otu,

2015).

The aim of this study was to explore the results of friend networking sites for

adolescent (10-19 years old) who had an account on a Dutch friend networking site. Using
friend networking site increases the percentage of relationship formed on the site. The

users get feedback either positive or negative feedback. Positive feedback on the profile

helps adolescent to boast their self- esteem and enhanced their personality, meanwhile

negative feedback may cause decreasing the self-esteem and personality (Valkenburg,

2006).

Therefore, the researchers work focused on the treatment of internet addiction but

there is no enough foundation for the treatment. Other professionals says that it is to find

the efficient strategies before addiction become into more serious problem (Vondrackova

& Gabrhelik 2016).

Here are the four main sub groups presented by Vondrackova and Gabrhelik

(2016) that need prevention, first as the children and adolescents, university students,

parents and others close to the member of the target group, and gambling employees

and employees with regular access to the internet.

In their study, they focused on four basic areas in preventing internet addiction,

first is the target groups, the improvement of specific skills, the program characteristics,

and last is the environmental interventions (Vondrackova & Gabrhelik 2016).

For conclusion, internet addiction may avoid or prevent through socializing with

others and keeping aware on community conditions. For the same reason, keeping a

strong relationship through talking and getting advice from others serves as the important

factor in preventing internet addiction. Undeniably, in terms of developing prevention of

internet addiction it should first target children and adolescents but it include also parents,

teachers, peers and other who can be a factor why children and adolescents are at risk
in internet addiction. The interventions or the ways preventing internet addiction should

have clearly evaluated (Vondrackova & Gabrhelik 2016).

SYNTHESIS

This chapter is all about the social media addiction. It defines the meaning of internet

addiction. It shows also the Griffiths six components that determine behavioural addiction,

salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict and relapsed. It deals to the

effect of social media among students and the impact of it.

Walker (2018) states that too much use of social media may be define as “addict”.

Besides, Chak & Leung (2004) they says that social media addiction is like any form of

addiction. However, Laird (2012) shows 10 different kinds of social media addict exists.

Griffiths (2018) says that social media helps and make our life easier and it serve as a

pathway for communication. Ahmad (2016) states the disadvantages of social media.

Grove (2017) focus on the study of the social media effects also on behavioural aspect.

Yao & Zhong (2014) relationship between internet addiction and participant study habits.

Cabral (n.d) he used Griffiths six components in expressing all about social media

addiction. Kaplan & Haenlein (n.d) the developer that states and developed one way

treatment on social media disorder. Otu (2015) simplifies the impact of social media

addiction to participant. However, Al-Mena (2015) proved that students who used internet

excessively will not excel in class. Valkenburg (2006) discussed the disadvantages of

social media addiction. Vondrackova & Gabrhelik (2016) states the different treatment of

internet addiction.
Those reviews help our research to enlighten our knowledge and understanding

about social media. It can be a basis for our research it also helps us in terms of data

collection or gathering data.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE METHODOLOGY

According to Heale and Twycross (n.d) a case study is a research methodology

that usually use in social and life sciences. There is no definite definition for a case study.

Nevertheless a case study can simply define as an exquisite study about a person,a group

of people or a unit.

Moreover, Mcleod (2008) states that a case studies are often used in exploratory

research. It can help to explicit new knowledge. They are important wat to conduct new

theories and can help to show a different aspects of person in life.

Qualitative case study methodology helps researchers to study a phenomenon

within their context. For it to become a reliable method to evaluate programs and develop

intervention it is needed to apply correctly (Baxter and Jack, 2010).

However, Soins (2016) states that qualitative study is a research method where a

phenomenon being examine through identification factors engaging with each other. This

case is observe in real circumstances.

According to Lloyd-Jones (2003) qualitative researcher place to both cognitive

processes unconventional for the growth of enquiry process.

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT

According to Alshenqeeti (2014) interviewing is not only analyses words but also

enables the participant to express their own thoughts and feelings. In addition,

interviewing is to broaden the scope of knowledge examined phenomena, as it is more

naturalistic and less data collection tool.

However, Kaluwich (2005) tells that the observation is a systematic description of

events, attitude, and artifacts in the setting chosen for research. Observation helps the

researcher to describe the situation using five senses.

In addition, it defines as a process of having a fellowship within a community and

associate so that its member will act naturally. That helps the researcher to understand

what is going on.

According to Alshenqeeti (2014) interviewing is not only analyses words but also

enables the participant to express their own thoughts and feelings. In addition,

interviewing is to broaden the scope of knowledge examined phenomena, as it is more

naturalistic and less data collection tool.

On the other hand, Jamshed (n.d) states that interview is the common type of data

gathering in qualitative research. It is where the practices be not only put down but also

accomplished, challenged and support.

Interviewing procedure and participant observation are very useful to the

researchers itself because it is more practical and easy way that the researchers in order

to gather information, tabulate data and processed the topic about social media addiction.

In order to study about the phenomenon and the problem, the interviewing and

participant observation takes place that serves as the basic steps in broadening one

research paper.

SAMPLING PROCEDURES

Self-selection sampling is a non-probability sampling that is based on the findings

of the researcher. This sampling is useful for the researcher who want people to volunteer

as part of a study on their own treaty.

Moreover, the advantages of self-selection, first, is reduces the time that needs to

find a participant. Second, the participant have greater willingness to give their time.
CHAPTER IV
