Deepika Padukone has given up her singleton status.
The new bride is appearing lovelier each day. Marriage
clearly has agreed with her. She’s happier, more open,
more relaxed. There’s an inner glow to her that can’t be
defined, rather can only be experienced. She’s brimming
with a radiance unseen before. And her joy is infectious.
You can’t help smile back when you talk to her because
it’s coming from a good place.
She hasn’t come to this without her share of
heartbreaks. In fact, she was one of the few stars, who
spoke so openly about depression. We see them at their
best on screen and believe that’s the kind of life they
lead in reality too. But beneath the rosy facade they
are as human as you and I. They need to eat, need to
breathe, they feel the pain if injured, they feel the hurt
in emotional distress and will bleed if cut. Yes, the
perception is of them being super human beings
without any care but that isn’t so. It’s the fear of
maintaining this improbable front that acts as their
kryptonite most of the time and weakens them.
I hope she finds an able partner in Ranveer Singh,
who will listen to her fears and allay them.
Workwise, it’s said, she’ll be playing attack survivor
Laxmi Agarwal in Meghna Gulzar’s next. Reportedly,
she’s going to produce the film as well. It’s going to be her
bravest decision career-wise. We are used to seeing her
in her beauteous avatar so it remains to be seen whether
her fans will accept her scarred visage. I hope they do.
Not only will it signal a triumph for her as an actor but
will also act as a beacon for other actors to take up roles,
which can help bring a positive change in society.
When she started her career with Om Shanti Om
(2007) she was a bubbly newcomer, who stood her own
against a superstar. All these years later, her aura has only
increased, as have her acting skills. She’s a completely
new person today and yet remains the girl-woman we
saw 12 years ago. I along with team Filmfare, wish her a
happily married life once again. Live long and prosper...

expressed his desire to act

“Dad cautioned us saying,
‘I’m just an action director
not a filmmaker. People
will recognise you as my
children, even offer you
tea. But you’ll only get
work if you have talent’,”
reveals Sunny. Vicky is
older to Sunny by a little
more than a year. “We
started our struggle together
but Vicky got his break
first,” he says of his brother,
who wowed audiences
with his roles in Raazi and
Sanju this year. Sunny
went on to be an assistant

Pinto and Gunday. He also
did theatre. He made his
debut film with Sunshine
Music Tours And Travels
in 2016. He’s also worked
in the web series Love At
First Sight.
Sunny hasn’t forgotten
his humble roots. “We used
to stay in a 10/10 chawl
in Malad. We studied in
an ordinary school. We
we finished college. My
mother (Veena Kaushal) has
made huge efforts to keep
the family together. She’s
the normal quotient in
our home,” he maintains.
Sunny hardly visited the
sets of his father’s films.
“I’ve visited dad’s sets only
thrice – during Asoka, Fiza
and Krrish. I was excited to
see Hrithik Roshan. In Fiza,
there was a scene in which
Hrithik sets a bike on fire.
There were retakes and
retakes,” he recalls.

As kids, we had common

but if someone tries to
hurt me, Vicky cannot

of the #MeToo campaign,
their father Sham
Kaushal was accused of
sexual misconduct in
the past. Sham issued an
unconditional apology for
‘unintentionally causing
any hurt or anguish’ to
anyone. “It was a tough
time. Yes, it was disturbing.
But you come out of it
stronger as a family. He’s
our father and as his
children we’re always with
him. We know him and
we’ll always stand by him,”
says Sunny.
Apart from acting,
Sunny enjoys painting.
He’s also learning to play
the jembe (an African
drum). He’s a romantic at
heart. “I like simplicity in
a woman. Big eyes attract
me. You can’t define love,
you can only feel it,” he
says. Sunny will be seen
in Kabir Khan’s web series
next year. “I’d like to touch
as many lives as possible
through my characters,” he
ends with a promise. „

Yes it will. Often, I’m willing to
let go of work because I know how
much other people are getting paid.
People try to short-change you.
I’m confident enough to say no to
a film, an endorsement or even an
appearance. I’m not doing this for
me. I’m doing this because I’d like
to pave the way for the generations
that’ll follow. Someone has to take
this head on. I’m happy to do that.
IS THAT THE REASON WHY YOU DIDN’T
SIGN FILMS IN THE LAST TWO YEARS?
No. When it comes to movies, I’m
always led by my heart, my gut and
my instincts. Nothing excites me
creatively enough than to get up
and go to work. Even when I did
four films simultaneously, it wasn’t
because I wanted to do four films
a year. It’s because they were all
different and creatively exciting.
WOULD YOU REDUCE YOUR FEE IF SOMETHING
EXCITING CAME YOUR WAY?
It’s relative. It would depend upon
how much the male actor is getting
paid. Everyone knows who’s getting
paid how much and why so. I’m not
delusional when it comes to that.
I’m also aware of how much I deliver
vis-à-vis the Khans, vis-à-vis the
newer boys like Ranveer Singh,
Ranbir Kapoor or Varun Dhawan.
I know where I stand. I’m also aware
of the production costs. I don’t want
a penny if the money is going to the
film. But I’ll not settle for being paid
less because they need to compensate
for the male actor. If you’re going to
say that don’t charge so much because
we want Ranbir Kapoor in the film
and we’ve got to pay him, then I’m
not okay with it. I’ll then demand
an equal amount.

travelled, I slept. I’ve had massages
like never before. I nurtured myself.
We need this as human beings and
most importantly as actors, you
need to replenish yourself. We tend
to think of ourselves as machines
churning out films, one after the
other. In the West, it doesn’t work
like that. There they do one film
in two or three years. Our mind set
needs to change.
WHAT EXCITED YOU ABOUT MEGHNA
GULZAR’S FILM?
It was the human connection. I’ve
met Laxmi Agarwal a couple of times.
My team told me about Meghna’s
film. Meghna must have thought that
I’ll never say yes to the film but she
still wanted to give it a shot. I wanted
to meet Meghna but emotionally this
wasn’t something I believed I wanted
to do. But right after the first scene
was narrated, I wanted to do the film.
I connected to it. It was a story that
needed to be told. It was clear how
invested Meghna was in the film. It’s
not just the script; you also have to
connect to the director. It’s important
that the crew has the right vision for
the film. After Meghna’s narration,
my team said we’ll get back to you.
But I was like no, I’m doing this. It
was so simple. We unnecessarily
complicate the process. I meet
everyone. I’m honest about why I’m
doing the film. I’ll never lie about
dates being an issue. It’s okay to not
connect and it’s important to give the
filmmaker an honest feedback.
THERE WERE TALKS THAT YOU’RE DOING
A SUPERHERO FILM…
Yes, I’m working on it. I hope it
happens. There’s no script as yet.
It’s something my friend and I are
developing. I was in the plane with
a friend from the industry and talking
about the movies we’d like to make.
We realised that this superhero film
is something we’d like to make. It’s
a seed we’re nurturing.
SO THE SUPERHERO FILM WILL BE YOUR NEXT
PROJECT AFTER MEGHNA GULZAR’S FILM?
It could be. But it needs to come
together. All the elements in the
film need to be correct. From the
characters to the director, everything
needs to be fixed.
YOU’VE RECENTLY TURNED A PRODUCER.
WHAT PROMPTED THAT?
The subject of the film. I want to
enable films that need either a
platform, a push or a voice. The
Laxmi Aggarwal film felt like the
right one to start with. I’m not sure
what I’ll produce next. I don’t have
a production house. This was one of
those films that I related to and there
was room to back it.
WHAT IS YOUR PRODUCTION CALLED?
Ka. In Egyptian it means soul. It
 means the part of a being that lives
beyond everything, like infinity.

COMING TO YOUR MARRIAGE, HAVE WE NOW

MOVED AWAY FROM THE NOTION THAT MARITAL
STATUS OF AN ACTRESS AFFECTS THE
BOX-OFFICE?
Let’s hope so. Everyone is married.
Does that mean that the industry
comes to a standstill? Does that
mean that we have no girls left?
I guess, previously it was the person’s
choice more than box-office diktats.
If actresses didn’t work after marriage,
it was their decision to prioritise
something else over work. Probably,
they were exhausted and just wanted
to live life and nurture their families.
But I’m sure the millennial woman
doesn’t feel like that. When you don’t
feel like that, it won’t be that way.

WILL YOUR MARRIAGE AFFECT THE KIND OF

FILMS THAT’LL YOU’LL SAY YES TO NOW?
No, why should it? The journey of life
will. The kind of films that I do today
and the films I did five years ago are
different because I was in a creatively
different space then. But marriage is
not going to change anything.

ARE THERE ANY CHANGES IN YOU

AFTER MARRIAGE?
I’m a lot more grounded. I feel
secure, I feel protected. When you’re
in a relationship, there’s still a lot
of nerves, you’re still unsure,
no matter how long you’ve been
dating. I guess, the terms boyfriend
and girlfriend sound frivolous.
Somewhere, it doesn’t carry that
weightage as marriage does. Today
when we look at each other, there’s
a sense of responsibility.

When you’re in a relationship it’s
different. We didn’t want to live
together and then see if we wanted to
marry each other or not. We’re both
traditional in that sense. Of course,
as boyfriend and girlfriend you stay
over, you go for holidays together but
we used to come back and go to our
own homes. We were clear that we’d
start living together after marriage
and figure life as we go along. Or else
where’s the beauty in the discovery?
So now we’re figuring things out. Like
I’m figuring out his routine. I call him
in the evening to check how his day
is going and what time he’s coming
home, what he will have for dinner…
(Smiles) All of this is great.
ELABORATE ON THIS LIVING TOGETHER?
It’s beautiful living together. I’m sure
cynics will say you’ve just gotten

MARRIAGE, YOU TOOK TIME. WHAT TOOK YOU
SO LONG TO DECIDE?
It was not about him. It was about
whether I was ready to commit to
a relationship. Because I’d been in
several relationships before and
many times my trust was broken.
When I met Ranveer, I was exhausted.
I had been constantly in and out
of relationships. I just wanted to
be alone for some time. I’ve never
casually dated anyone. I’ve been in
relationships since I was13. (Grins)
Now that I’m married I can say this.
Whether it was one year, two years
or three years, they were always
proper relationships. It was always
if you like someone you give it your
hundred per cent.
So when this relationship, which
I was in ended in 2012, I was like I’m
done. I wanted to try out this concept
relationship, you go through your ups
and downs but we never broke up.
There was no major fight or saying
let’s take time off and figure this out.
We’ve fought; we’ve had our ups and
downs. But we stuck through all of
that. We got engaged four years ago.
WHAT?
No one knows this. We got engaged

impact on your later relationships.

call, I don’t have to worry. It’s such a
silly thing but yet such an important
thing. I don’t have to worry about his
whereabouts. I’ve lived with that fear
for years before this.
YOU TWO ARE SUCH DIFFERENT PEOPLE. HE’S
LIKE A WHIRLWIND WHILE YOU ARE SO CALM…
(Laughs) Not many people know
that when he is with me, he’s in
shavaasan (relaxed) mode. I ask what
happened to your energy. He’ll say
‘I’m conserving it because I have to
attend an event, I have to spend it
there’. With him, there’s no holding
back, he’s all heart and he gives.
When he goes on a reality show after
just sleeping for two hours, he’ll give
everything to that show. But at the
same time, he’s also that guy who’ll
come home and vegetate. We joke
with each other, play with each other,
eat together. Sometimes, there’s only
silence between us. The side that not
many people know of or which does
not come out often is his intelligence.

Luv Ranjan. She refutes
that emphatically and
explains, “Luv sir was the
first person to believe in
me. He’s someone, who
takes care of all his actors,
not just me. The only
difference is that the other
actors are male.” She adds,
“After my parents, he’s
one person who’s always
had my best interests at
heart. He’s never had any
wrong thought or selfish
motive.” She maintains
that the director would
always remain a close
friend. “But that’s all there
is,” she shrugs.
In fact, such is Nushrat’s
sense of loyalty towards
her mentor that she even
came out vociferously in
support of the director,
when he was accused of
sexual misconduct by
an actress in the wake
of Bollywood’s ongoing
#MeToo campaign.
She insists she never
had to face the casting
couch. “This is one of the
main reasons why
I probably keep working
with people like Abhishek
Pathak (producer) and Luv
sir because I feel safe and
comfortable with them.”
She concedes, “It must
be difficult for girls to get
stuck in an ugly situation
like that not knowing
what to do.” Her advice
to girls? “Girls shouldn’t
get pressured. No matter
who it is, what it is, don’t
fall for false promises.
You should set your
own rules and only do
what you believe is right
irrespective of how tough
it is.”
Coming to her personal
sphere, she says her
definition of love has
changed over the years.
“I’ve come to a place
where love means
companionship - a person
who kind of gets you
and someone you can
understand as well. That
mutual understanding is
absolutely essential,” she
explains.
But right now it’s
only work for her. She’s

success and doesn’t want
to take it for granted.
“Now, I know what the
true meaning of success

The language is the most difficult thing. Bihari is a unique
language. Few actresses like Swara (Bhaskar) speak it well.
Just the way Punjabi comes to me naturally. But I’m trying
to grasp the language. Fortunately, our director, Prashant
Singh, belongs to the region. Ajayji, our coach, is helping
us with the intonations. My character, Babli, is today’s
girl. She’s open-hearted and confident but there’s a certain
vulnerability about her. She’s not a dabangg character.
You’re reuniting with Sidharth Malhotra after Hasee Toh
Phasee (HTP) in Jabariya Jodi. How much has he changed?
HTP (2014) was Sid’s second film. It was my fourth. We
both were new. So, we were less affected by the industry.
We used to work without pressure. Today, there’s pressure.
I’ve watched him grow as a person and as an actor. We’re
not kids anymore. We all have grown - Arjun (Kapoor),
Varun (Dhawan), Alia (Bhatt), Shraddha (Kapoor), Sid and
me. We’ve all evolved.
What means the most in life right now?
(Smiles) That’s a secret. But yes, being happy is the most
important thing in my life. Something, which I never
gave thought to before. Earlier, I’d only think about work.
I never concentrated on my life as such. I just went
about shooting, travelling... But today I’m living life
consciously. Like I must do these things today, I must
achieve this today. I’m conscious about my personal life,
which includes my love life, my family, my friends and
my team and how I can keep these areas safe and good.
Having a balanced life, is my priority. We can work like
mad but post pack-up, one should enjoy a personal life

selfishly – in the sense I never cared about my people the
way I do today. I had forgotten the importance of my own
self. Not anymore.
When did the realisation come?
(Winks) I took a break in 2016 but I’m so relevant that
people believe I took it recently. That’s a good thing. I had
taken a break for just eight months. I did up my home
during that time. But yes, the break taught me a lot. I went
through a big low in my personal and professional life
simultaneously. Failure teaches you the most. I realised
my self-worth. I understood that I didn’t want to be
depressed ever. I made up my mind that I wouldn’t waste
a single day in my life. This was my biggest lesson. I’m
glad this realisation happened early in life. At the age of
26. Now, I’m going to live my entire life with this mind-
set. I’m blessed that a big setback and the subsequent
depression, helped me emerge a happier person. Nothing
better has happened in life.
How did you handle the depression?
During that phase, I couldn’t think positively. My brothers,
Shivang and Sehej, my best friends and my soulmates,
took great care of me and so did my friend Sanjana. They
helped me realise my self-worth and regain confidence.
Usually, it’s difficult for people to step out of that phase.
But I’ve emerged doubly confident, doubly happy.
Arjun Kapoor and you share a unique bond too.
Touchwood, kisi ki nazar na lage. We share an honest
relationship. There’s no filter between us. We can talk
about anything to each other. Then we realise that ki arrey
yeh kya bola. As co-stars, there’s an ease of working We’re
also protective about each other. I’ve seen him at his most
vulnerable during Ishaqzaade. Our friendship began from
there. His mother (the late Mona Kapoor) was suffering
from cancer then. I was going through my first release. A
friendship formed during troubled times is genuine. He’s
part of my life. If I have a problem, I can even call him at
3 am. He will patiently hear me out. Sometimes, I’m like

privy to their secrets. But
that’s something he guards
ferociously. “Usually,
channels ask me to prod
the star about controversies
in their lives for higher
TRPs. But I don’t do that.
They’re my friends,” he
says. He maintains he
cannot disrespect his
guests. “They’re guests
on my show – which I
consider as my home. So,
I’ll never disrespect them
or show them in poor light.

to hit below the belt. For
the sake of TRPs, I don’t
want to spread filth. I’d
rather spread happiness,”
he declares. He cites an
example, “For instance,

my reality check. Or else
all the adulation can go to
your head. She cautions
me saying, ‘Ab udhna
bandh karo. Success is
there today. It may not be
there tomorrow. Stay real,”
he confides.
He has no regrets and
doesn’t dwell in the past
nor does he foster negative
thoughts. “Whatever
choices I made, I did it
with awareness. No one
forced me to do anything.
What happened was
supposed to happen. One
should move on. That’s
my funda,” he smiles.
“But yes, the fire to act
will always remain. Even
if I deliver a 100-crore
film, the passion will
persist. I know my Friday
will come,” he asserts.

ith eight Hindi
releases so
far, music
composer
Amit Trivedi seemingly
had the busiest year of
his life. It’s a pity that
barring a couple of films,
the rest didn’t have him
as a solo composer. That
in a nutshell tells you the
story of Hindi film music in
current times.
Remix king Tanishk
Bagchi too had around the
same number of releases.
But his output was largely
limited to remaking old
classics. The big names in
music were conspicuous by
their absence. AR Rahman
was a guest composer in
Sanju. Pritam didn’t have
any release, just like Vishal-
Shekhar. While Shankar-
Ehsaan-Loy had just two
– Raazi and Soorma.
Where lyricists are
concerned, with Pataakha,
Soorma and Raazi, Gulzar
continued to make his
presence felt. The bard
admirably stays relevant
even at 84. Javed Akhtar
and Prasoon Joshi
were missed this year.
Irshad Kamil had Sanju,
Veere Di Wedding was a fun-filled,

Zarina Wahab has come to own her space, writes Farhana Farook

She filled in the vacuum left behind by the charming Jaya Bhaduri after her marriage in 1973. The audience,
longing for the girl-next-door they could identify with, found solace in another FTII graduate, Zarina Wahab. Two
films back to back, Chitchor in ’76 and Gharonda in ’77 made Zarina a household name. While one was a rustic
romance of mistaken identities, the other was an urban drama where dreams die before turning concrete. The
music of both has outlived the creators. Ravindra Jain’s Jab deep jale aana and Jaidev’s Tumhe hona ho continue
to be the yardstick in music contests and a throwback at the dusky beauty. Since then Zarina, has had several
Hindi and Malayalam blockbusters to her credit. Just as her affair with the camera is an on-going one, so has been
her unwavering commitment to husband Aditya Pancholi. While the older woman-younger man romance is the
flavour of the season today, the Zarina-Aditya marriage in 1986 was written off by cynics even before the rites were
completed. Today, it has survived rain, hail and storm... Read on to know the musings of the perfect wife…

Coming back to her career in the ’70s,

depression and frustration that young
aspirants go through,” concedes the actor
who was then signed for Rajshri Productions’
Chitchor (1976). It was directed by Basu
Chatterjee. The film paired her with another
natural, Amol Palekar. “People still recognise
me as the Gori tera gaon bada pyaara girl,”
she smiles. “Basuda was against make-up.
He’d order, ‘Make-up nikalo!’ I’d say,
‘Dada, I’m so dark please let me apply
some na’,” she laughs.
Another memory she has is of being called
unexpectedly by Rajshri Productions for a
film. “They gave me a costume asking me to
wear it quickly as the set was waiting. When
I asked whose clothes they were, nobody was
ready to answer. Finally, someone said the

actress of the film was giving them trouble.
They had already shot 11 reels with her but
had to let her go,” she reveals. The film was
Gopaal Krishna (1979) opposite Sachin
Pilgaonkar. Rajshri Productions became her
second home as she went on to do films like
Naiyya (1979), Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979),
Jazbaat (1980) and Dard-E- Dil (1983) with
them. Another film that’s an indispensible
part of her repertoire is Bhimsain’s
Gharonda, also with Amol Palekar.
Spotlighting a love story gone kaput, it
touched a chord in urban audiences in
search of the elusive home. “Gharonda won
me a Filmfare nomination,” she recalls.
Zarina was often compared to Jaya
Bhaduri given her flair for earthy and
authentic characters. “Those days, I had
signed a film contract with a particular
producer. Not knowing English well, I didn’t
understand the clauses. When I told Jayaji
about it, she asked me to get the contract. It
mentioned that for five years only a
minimum portion of my earnings would
come to me. The rest would go to the

starrer. Recently, she lost out on a good
role too. “The makers said that they
had me in mind for the role. I was
given the script; I have it with me even
now. I went through it, I underlined
my dialogue… But when I didn’t hear
from them, I enquired, only to know
someone else was doing it,” she
smiles wryly. “What was not in my n
destiny, I had to lose. But I’ve never
snatched anyone else’s role.”

arina has had a stellar career in
television too with shows like
Maayka, Zaara – Pyaar Ki
Saugat, Virrudh, Ek Kiran Roshni
Ki and Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan
Hai. In the past decade, she was seen in
notable roles in films like My Name Is Khan,
Rakta Charitra, Agneepath, Vishwapooram
and Dil Dhadakne Do, as also Malayalam
films like Adaminte Makan Abu and And
The Oscar Goes To. She’s looking forward to
the release of Dheeraj Pandit’s Junction
Varanasi. “Sometimes, I’m called to audition
for a particular role. After so many years of
work, it sounds disgusting. Earlier, I had
to work. Today I want to work. That’s the
difference. Work is oxygen for me. I’m a
workaholic. Even if I work for 10 days a
month, I’m happy,” she explains.
Coming to her personal life, in the ’80s,
Nari Hira was producing a video film for
Hiba Films titled Kalank Ka Tika (1986).
That changed Zarina’s life forever. “Adit itya

directed by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi (of
Chanakya fame, was supposed to release
three years back. But it was mired in
controversies and financial jeopardy. But the
film captures the mystic fervour of Benares.
Here, Sunny Deol takes a detour from his
brawny machismo avatar to play a part that
resonates his character in Arjun Pandit.
Loosely inspired from the book Kashi Ka
Assi by Dr Kashi Nath Singh, the film poses
a diatribe against the commercialisation
of the pilgrim town. It’s viewed from
the vantage point of a Sanskrit teacher,
Dharam Pandey (Sunny Deol), who faces
a moral dilemma and penury owing to the
degradation of values. Deol is dead against
the videshis who visit Benares under the
pretext of learning but engage in bhog
and yog. His staunch principles collide
with the Brahmins and the flippant tourist
guide Kanni (Ravi Kishan). But financial
hardships and nagging by the pundit’s
better half, Savitri (Sakshi Tanwar) force
him to compromise.
Dwivedi’s Assi is verbose and theatrical.
The plot loses its foothold to digressions
around Ram janmabhoomi, Ayodhya
temple and reservation that happen in
a modest ‘Pappu ki Chai’ dukaan.
Sunny Deol lends gravitas to his part.
Sakshi performs well as the housewife
succumbing to materialistic desires. Ravi
Kishan lends authenticity to his negative
persona. Faisal Rashid as the barber-turned-
yogi -is brilliant!

BAZAAR
Bazaar is about a ruthless businessman,
a young man trying to make it to the top,
the riches of the stock market, insider
trading and a man’s relation with his
family. The multiple plot lines leave the
door open for loose ends. Nevertheless,
Saif Ali Khan pulls off every ‘cutthroat
Shakun Kothari’ moment with charisma.
The story gets predictable in the second
half but the climax is strong.
